YES! At Last: TT Oil Change Procedure

_Finally_ stumbled onto this in my April 2008 issue (#163) of Excellence!

IMO, now all we need to be "perfect" is:

Text recognition software treatment so these instructions can be free of the jpg bonds.

    Anybody have this?

Anyway: this is a "keeper." Even if you don't DIY, copy it and file it for the day you get interested.

Pics of tank and drain plugs in next two posts (courtesy of another kind Rennteamer).

Does changing your own oil have any warranty implications?

Re: YES! At Last: TT Oil Change Procedure

only if you screw up and damage something , like the oil tank or say cross thread one of the drain plugs ....could happen

Re: YES! At Last: TT Oil Change Procedure

Here in the UK, it's essential to have a full DEALER service history for resale value protection so we tend not to do this ourselves - even though this excellent article shows how easy it is for anyone with basic car maintenance skills.

AFAIK no fing way. You should keep the receipts for the oil in case of trouble. Matter of fact say there were a Fram equivalent to the Porsche oil filter. There are supposedly laws in place to protect the DIY consumer from fault if he uses aftermarket _equivalent_ parts. Of course I'd never use anything other than "genuine Porsche Parts."

DIY oil change makes sense if you feel better changing it every year or so _within_ the two years service interval they recommend.

BTW, to keep warranty you must get the car serviced as required. Involves other stuff not only an oil change.

Re: YES! At Last: TT Oil Change Procedure

Oops..., anybody got a pic of the Turbo drain plugs mentioned in above DIY instructions?

Re: YES! At Last: TT Oil Change Procedure

I'm all thumbs and can barely ADD oil without making a mess. No way i'm attempting this LOL! I'm so mechanically imept it's scary.

Start doing what many of us "gearheads" did when we were young kids; take stuff apart to see how it works and put it back together. It helps to start with stuff that has been junked. In a year or so you'll be fixing your bathroom plumbing. There's DIY help all over the internet too!!

Re: YES! At Last: TT Oil Change Procedure

God, I can't believe so many people are afraid of (or don't know how) to change their oil.

This is one of the first things you learn how to do when you get your first car.

So long as you posses the ability to pour liquid from one container to another and can unscrew a bolt with a wrench, YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR OIL.

From my experience , this is by far the most critical step - you can rip off from the remote sheet metal oil tank the braised flange seat for THIS plug if you don't apply proper counterforce to its base! The other drain plug , on the cast engine sump , you can whack at with a mallet to loosen.

Re: YES! At Last: TT Oil Change Procedure

Good point MKW. A novice would most likely screw up big time right here.

Hard to learn just by someone's explaining it but you must hold wrench in exactly the same spot as you apply counterforce with smaller wrench on plug.

Perhaps you can rest wrench handle on exhaust manifold as a reference for it not moving.

You have to turn up the volume on your mental awareness for that hand holding the bigger wrench.

Comes naturally for experienced wrench slinging guys, but new guys MUST PAY ATTENTION!!!
