997.2 Technical Manuals (newbie question alert)

Technical manuals; as I've got my first Targa coming in December, what is the best technical manual to get for these cars, and where does one source them. I'm in the US and would get a US Spec car.

I'm looking for the type of diagrams that show how things are assembled so I can figure out not only how to get panels off or get parts out, but also what parts to replace, etc.

Re: 997.2 Technical Manuals (newbie question alert)

You could try getting the workshop manual but it's not AFAIK freely available to the public. You could befriend a technician in your local OPC or see if it's available on somewhere like Renntech.org

Re: 997.2 Technical Manuals (newbie question alert

AFAIK, A _service_ manual is "impossible" to get and would cost thousand(s) of dollars.

Something like this is readily avail. at dealer (hopefully still readily avail.) and is about 100-150 pages loaded with "gear headed enthusiast" information. Part number on pic:

Re: 997.2 Technical Manuals (newbie question alert

So there are no service manuals showing parts blowups, panel disassembly, etc. ? I'm not talking the official dealer shop manuals, which are usually many binders and may hundreds of pages, but some variation there-of for home use.

What about parts guides (electronic parts catalog software)? I've had that for my VWs and its been very handy at figuring out what the part number are, how they parts all stack together, and more importantly, how to take things apart by knowing where the screws, snaps, etc. are.

Re: 997.2 Technical Manuals (newbie question alert

    You're welcome.

Parts catalogs (exploded diagrams)? You can try here but the latest is for 2005 Carrera and you may need a password to log on. Pay attention: click "parts catalogs" on left half of "log on" page.

May I repeat: the above cited "Service Information" manual should be in the hands of all "enthusiast" Carrera/Carrera S owners. It answers thousands of questions like, for example, which car has a self-adjusting clutch; schematic of the brake system circuit, etc.

Re: 997.2 Technical Manuals (newbie question alert

Yes, thats the sort of stuff I'm looking for. Many thanks!

    Re: 997.2 Technical Manuals

Thanks MMD. Priceless info as usual

Don't want to hijack or sidetrack your thread, but did you get the VW electronic parts catalog online or through your dealer?

Thanks in advance, if you could put me on the right track.

Nah..., it's a pleasure to "payback" by being helpful, easy_. There's been _innumerable_ acts of kindness demonstrated here by many many guys on Rennteam. WOW!

Through the dealer? Not hardly. I cannot imagine any car maker allowing such a useful piece of software to actually fall into the hands of the end product user. I mean, what would happen if I, a mere owner of three VW's, were to get my hands on ETKA for VAG, and be able to look up parts, browse the exploded diagrams and print them out to show up at the part country with that sheet and tell them exactly what part I needed! The world is coming to an end... you can feel it, right?

I managed to get a copy someone with access to it uploaded to the eDonkey file sharing network back in the day. Yes, I'm willing to steal if it produces no loss or financial impact for anyone else.

OK, I admit it, it was a dumb question.
