    Valet Parking Mode, or Service Key?

    Hi,

    I commute most weeks via a Boeing 777, so my car spends most of the time at the LAX parking lot. I have noticed over the years that there tends to be minor millage deviations on my car when I return. When I drove the Vette, I also notice excessive tire wear. I think the boys at the garage are having a little fun with my cars, while I'm away. Since I don't want this to continue, especially since I'm dealing with a Porsche, I turned on the speed warning notice and set it to 15 MPH. Since then, the mysterious millage has disappeared, but I know this will only be temporary. On my tuned Audi, I had a remote I could plug into the OBDE-II plug, and program the car for a valet mode, which limited the speed and distance the car could travel under this mode. Is there anything similar for the Porsche? Thanks.

    My first Porsche sales guy explicitly said there was a __valet__ RPM limiter in the 997 you could set for those valets who are apes. This turned out to be bullsh*t. I doubt things have changed since then.

    There is an RPM limiter....but not for the valet. The car is in "go slow" mode (can't remember the exact name for it)until the car comes off the boat and the device is disabled usually by the receiving dealer.

    This APR system using the cruise control looks amazing! Anybody has purchased that? I am seriously considering it!

    It's not a "device", but different engine control software for delivery only. It limits available power and speed to prevent drivers at the ports from organizing autocrosses on the decks of roro freighters.

    Dealer has to install "correct" software before handing over car to customer. It would therefore not be possible for owner to switch over to this mode before giving the keys to a parking valet.

    I think one would need to buy a PIWIS terminal to do this at home!

    There is aftermarket ecu software that lets you change into this mode on the fly...

    That's why you should only park in valet lots that you trust, or not at all. And always write down the mileage and make sure they know you are doing it.

    That said, you can still do A LOT of damage to a car without driving more than a couple miles.

    The most important thing is the quality of the lot.

    If you are doing long term, just take a cab to the airport. Or go to a self service, park & lock lot.

    If your going to use valet, I suggest you ride with the valet to the parking structure and park the car yourself. You keep the key and lock the car. Pay him a good tip and you probably can ride back with him in another car if the parking structure is far.

    When you return ,ride with the valet while he parks another car and get your car. Again give him a tip.

    This way your protected as is the parking facility and valet. I have never had any issues or objections when following the above procedure.
