PCM noise. Did it happen to u ?

My PCM is making strange noises. It sounds like when a CD is turning . It' not all the time, but very often. My dealer looked at me saying when problems start with the PCM it is bad news, and usually gets to the point where it needs to be changed.
Have you had this problem ? What was the solution ?

Re: PCM noise. Did it happen to u ?

Which PCM? The new ones on the 997.2? They have hard disk nav systems... so I'm wondering if it could be a hard-disk sound you are hearing....

Re: PCM noise. Did it happen to u ?

oculd be ur CD drive going.

just blame it on your hard sport suspension and claim it on warranty?!

Re: PCM noise. Did it happen to u ?

Mine makes a high pitched noice from time to time, but turning engine off & on fixes it.

On occasion my PCM2 makes that noise for several seconds, too. So far it happens only when I shut off the car. The strange thing is, due to the PSE I don't use the PCM very often and the CD turning sound comes even if I haven't used the PCM during a drive. FWIW, my first PCM that failed completely and was replaced under warranty had the same CD turning sound from time to time. If it fails again I will not replace it. The next owner of the car that might be PAG itself can fix it if he really wants

Re: PCM noise. Did it happen to u ?

Sounds like it's cooked. My 997S was an early 2006. PCM wouldn't eject CD, kept buzzing. Three trips to fix finally resulted in a complete replacement of the unit.

There's (or should be) a tech service bulletin on early PCM failures. They should KNOW the entire unit needs to be replaced; not the "three modules (?)" which they wasted my time with by trying to fix the first and second time.

****WARNING*****: this PCM thing MIGHT be ruining your battery since it never turns off and continues it's current drain. Make sure you connect your Battery Maintainer. My battery was also _destroyed_ during my PCM failure.

You guys with suspected PCM failure should check your current draw when parked. If greater than described below: defective PCM is the likely culprit.

Re: PCM noise. Did it happen to u ?

Thanks..It looks like my PCM is fried !!
It' s on a PCM2 ( 997.1) and the noise comes always when I drive. It can be there about every 5 minutes, 4 or 5 times in a row. Then nothing for two ours
I am selling my car this month, as next month my new one arrives.... not happy with kind of problem now!

Re: PCM noise. Did it happen to u ?

Had the same issue with my PCM, Cd wouldn't eject OPC changed the whole unit under warranty after trying several times to fix the problem.

Re: PCM noise. Did it happen to u ?

If you suspect problems with your PCM, get it changed before your warranty runs out. Extended warranties don't cover the PCM!

Just about to take up the first year's extended warranty on my car (coming up two years old) - and according to my OPC with effect from 1st September the extended warranty cover is to be improved to cover kit like PCM - for an increased premium, of course.

    That's interesting news DC.

What price are they quoting for the improved package?

Mine is due in October...last year it cost Pounds875. Had a RMS failure during the year so suppose I got value for money.

The main value though is peace of mind and the services of Porsche Assistance, whom I've always found to be excellent.

Please advise on price to include PCM....many thanks.

Just telephoned my OPC (Bournemouth). Price per annum now is Pounds1,150 (Boxster & Cayman) Pounds1,350 (997 & Cayenne). This includes around Pounds200 for a mandatory check, however, if renewal co-incides with a service then this is reduced. Discount is available for two years cover which for the Boxster is Pounds2,095. (Sorry forgot to ask the two year premium for 997) An additional cost saving of taking out two year's cover is that you don't need to have the Pounds200 check done at the end of year 1.

Cover is now fully comprehensive only exceptions being wear and tear items, whereas previously it only covered listed items (which excluded audio, PCM etc.)

This change comes into effect from 1st October not 1st September as I had stated earlier.

Re: PCM noise. Did it happen to u ?

Thanks v much DC Valuable info

Re: PCM noise. Did it happen to u ?

Many thanks for the info DC..

I'll check with my OPC next week.

BTW - they used to waive the mandatory '111 point check' if you took out the extended warranty BEFORE the previous one expired. Wonder if this is still the case?

Are you sitting down while reading this?

When I had PCM trouble in 2006 I was told an unwarrantied unit would have cost us$2700.00 to replace.

Heck..., somehow that seems cheap nowadays.

My understanding is no - you have to have the check at every renewal, which is why it is included in the cost of the cover. Hence part of the saving for taking out a two year policy.

Don't quite understand why as if there is anything amiss it should be covered by the unexpired policy.

Re: PCM noise. Did it happen to u ?

The previous porsche warranty had more exclusions than covered items , including electrical parts and motors. Are there any exclusions on the new warranty other than brakes , tyres , exhaust and clutch ? Is trim now covered such as the air vents which can fall apart ?

I haven't seen the small print, only details I've gleaned are from a telephone conversation with my OPC, but as I mentioned earlier I believe only wear and tear items are now excluded.
