    Lo-jack it?

Ok, after some searching and reading, only a few posts touched the subject, but non really in any depth, so how about this thread being a source in the future?

Who has installed lo-jack on their car? Why? What is the cost to install, and service cost?

    Who has not, and why?

My insurance does give a discount on comprehensive if a tracking system is installed, but I doubt its enough to cover the monthly or annual fees.

    Re: Lo-jack it?

Why would you want your car back after some hooligan has roughed it up?

Yeah, reamed the sht out of it and beat the suspension to death: suuuuuuuure, I want it back.

My plan? Wait a few days (weeks?) before reporting it stolen.

Or wait a _month_ tell insurance company you assumed your "cousin" borrowed it.

Just pray they never find it.

    Re: Lo-jack it?

I always wondered the same thing. Stolen cars have the crap beat out of them, so why would I ever want it back. Especially a newer 911, you just know the bastard that stole it is going to abuse the car.

    Re: Lo-jack it?

All new 911's in the UK are now fitted with the Porsche Tracking system!

    Re: Lo-jack it?

    what is Lo-jack properly?

    Re: Lo-jack it?

If some steals my car I wouldn't want it back. People are using the Boomerang system up here quite a bit. Apparently what the thieves do now is tow your car about 2 miles from where they stole it an stash it for a few days. If the cops don't find it, it probably doesn't have the Boomerang and then they strip it or ship it.

My dealer told me they had a customer install the Boomerang and their 911 got stolen... 45 minutes later the cops pulled over a truck on its way to Windsor with the 911 in the back. I think it's $800 to install. The unit has built in battery in case the cars battery is disconnected. You get a key fob, and if the car moves and the fob is not in the vicinity of the car, it automatically alerts the company and then they phone you and ask why your car is moving! Interesting technology.

    Re: Lo-jack it?

Lo-Jack http://lojack.com is a US company that has the same services as the boomerang system described above.

Its a concealed radio transceiver with battery backup. In the US, if a car is reported as stolen to the police and they update that data (with VIN) to the state databases, LoJack sends out a signal to activate your concealed transmitter, which starts pinging a radio signal that the police can then get location info from to find the vehicle.

If a punk steals it, yeah, I would not want it back. If a professional thief steals it to sell or strip, not to joyride, then would not beat the snot out of it in the day or less they may have with it (assuming the tracking and police recovery works as advertised).

If I just purchased an off the lot stock 911, yeah, I'd not want it back, as replacing it is easy enough. If I'm driving a customized Targa that isn't easily replace in under a year or more, then ... well, then I might want it back.

What I'm curious about is if anyone with a 911 has had Lo-Jack installed in the US as a precaution. Doesn't sound like it, or they don't want to speak up.

    Re: Lo-jack it?

I have Lo-Jack, but for the reasons others mention I'm not sure I'd fit it next time round. If my car were to get stolen, I'm not sure I'd want it back either. I do get a discount on the insurance though.

Seriously: just keep your mouth shut, take a cab or bus home, report the car stolen a week later.

Come up with an "alibi" for not realizing it was stolen sooner if they challenge you later in their investigation.

Most importantly: keep your mouth shut.

    Re: Lo-jack it?

The downside of just keeping quiet (to help increase the odds greatly that the car was sold, stripped, etc and won't be recovered) is that it results in success for the thief and thus supports and strengthens the auto-theft business.

What I'd like is to have a tracker so I could find where the car is, then go out there with my other car and my HK PSG-1 clone, and put a 7.62mm round into the thief's gut. But I'm not allowed to.

    Re: Lo-jack it?

We have tracker in the UK which does a similar thing. I agree, wouldn't want my car back if it'd been nicked. Trouble is, insurance companies wont cover you for theft if you don't have it. (at least that's been my experience)

Just one?! Loooove the HK product line! I'm imagining I'd make him beg for his life first.

    Re: Lo-jack it?

I got the early warning version. As soon as it is moved, it reports it. So far it has worked fine, no stolen car.
