Panamera is to challange the 911.

Sounds like a very serious whip that's going to counter its weight without problems. A true spaceship.

    Quote:
``The Panamera is to have the space, luxury and ambience of a true limousine and the handling and performance of an executive sedan,'' Porsche Cars Australia spokesman Paul Ellis told drive.com.au.

``My understanding is that the car, from a performance point of view, has an issue in that it is almost too good. The 911 is the benchmark car.

``From the performance point of view it has exceeded the benchmarks.''

the Panamera had performed well in back-to-back tests against AMG Benzes and the M5

Propaganda to make family men feel OK that they have to buy a practical Porsche instead of the 911 they wanted.

Re: Panamera is to challange the 911.

It's not whether it makes us feel ok or not. Now that I have a kid, 911 is just too impractical. I don't use my 2 seater cars anymore because the baby cannot come in the car.

Buy a 612, it is big enough and drives like a true sportscar.

Cost a fortune, doesn't have four doors and has a hideous front end.

    1) not really for what you get, it is all relative, the fast Panamera will cost twice as much as an M5... My post was for WAY, not for M5 owners looking for an "upgrade".
    2) who cares as long as you have space in the back
    3) beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have yet to encounter ONE person who saw it in real and said they didn't like it. Ownership is one thing, bench racing with magazine pics is another.

Re: Panamera is to challange the 911.

Scifrog, unfortunately I will have to agree with Emperor. Scalietti is UGLY. My friend has one and it drives just like a true sports car. But I wouldn't buy it even if it cost the same as a panarama. As for the cost of Panarama Turbo, are you suggesting that it would cost more than a GT2? I would have thought it will be priced like a 911 turbo. Ah forget all these. I am going to save up for a used Phantom!

And that's exactly how it will be price, near around Euro /$120 000.

    2) I never heard of anybody saying he/she does not care of how his/her car looks like, just because they have space in the back!
    3) I have seen many of them in real (so with WAY we are two already) and they look terrible!!! And remember that many people are confusing beautiful cars with impressive cars. And the size of the sCAGAlietti makes it impressive but ugly!

Re: Panamera is to challange the 911.

M5 are $84k here (I thought they were less...), so not quite double for the Panamera turbo.

Of course the 612 is big, it fits four people...
But the point is it doesn't drive like a big car...
As far as looks, it is very subjective, so I will leave it at that.

The "who cares as long as you have space in the back" was in response to your point that there are only two doors vs four, not the design...

You might also think performance is not on par with the latest cars, well don't forget the 612 is a four year old car already, the 612M will reset the clocks, albeit at a much higher price ($300k +).

Absolutely. However, would you buy one? It's not floating my boat at all.

Re: Panamera is to challange the 911.

My hope is that the Panamera will bleed off the market segment that's been pulling the 911 in such an un-911 direction. Let all the people who lust over 42 different leather options and electric seats move on to the Panemera and leave the 911 for enthusiasts. Then maybe we can see the 911's weight and size start to drop back down to more traditional levels.

Couldn't agree more, but latest rumors indicate next 911 will be even bigger (longer wheelbase)

Perhaps that mean the engine will be getting two additional cylinders.

Re: Panamera is to challange the 911.

    You decide...

Re: Panamera is to challange the 911.

the rapide has a better shape than all the other astons, the only real challenger is that bmw possibility, with a distant third going to the cls.

Just look at the sophistication levels in the styling. panamera mule looks like a jetta replacement, not in the same league.

The panamera hope from the other thread would be a different story. Some have said that design couldn't be built, well aston did it.

The difference is Bez, how about a trade.

That would be great but it ain't gonna happen. The 11 will continue to have the true enthusiast buyer (less and less) and the poseur buyer (more and more).

Re: Panamera is to challange the 911.

ADias, I think you're right. More and more poseur are buying the 911 because it's a myth and the vast majority of buyers don't buy the car for its performances but as a status symbol.

I find the Rapide a caricature of a two door Aston Martin. A stretched and elongated DB-something.
I am not saying the Panamera is better because I haven't seen it yet, like most of you haven't (except those that work for PAG).

As things stand now, give me an AMG CLS anytime!

reginos, I agree. The Rapide just isn't pretty with its overly-elongated shape.

    Sorry, CLS is the ugliest.

I actually like it. Not crazy about the CLS' shape, but the car looks fine. And with the 55K engine it's a dream.
