Switzerland considering extremely tough anti-car l

"Switzerland considering extremely tough anti-car law
Posted on Thursday 7 August 2008

Switzerland's political system, like that of California and several other states and nations, allows for individuals to propose legislation upon the gathering of enough signatures to support the bill. One such proposition by the youth section of the Swiss Green Party would ban all vehicles weighing over 2.2 metric tons (4,820lbs) or emitting more than 250g/km of CO2, among other restrictions. The law would effectively eliminate the vast majority of the SUV and sports car market overnight.

Other elements of the bill that would make it among the toughest in the world if enacted include a speed limit of 100km/h (62mph) on cars 'grandfathered' in by being registered before the law goes into effect, a complete ban on diesel-powered cars without particulate filters and cars with front fascias deemed dangerous to pedestrians, reports the Swiss site Asphalte.

Examples of the cars that would be affected by the proposed law include the complete ban from sale of all but the Boxster and Cayman 2.7 (pictured) from Porsche's lineup, all of the high-performance arms of the German carmakers, as well as most Italian cars such as Ferrari and Lamborghini and the majority of American muscle cars and SUVs. Essentially the only cars that would be allowed for sale would be highly efficient six-cylinders and four-cylinder cars, with very few high-performance or opulent and large vehicles remaining."

they'll just register their cars across the border LOL

Let's see what the Swiss here, have to say about it. It might be inaccurate news.

Re: Switzerland considering extremely tough anti-c

For what i know it's all true... but it's not law, yet.

Will it be a referendum or a law passed in parliament?
What are the chances of being successful?

Re: Switzerland considering extremely tough anti-c

It is a citizens' initiative. The group had to collect 100k signature within a relatively short period of time for the initiative to be considered (wheras a referendum is the people's instrument against a new law and needs only 50k signatures to enforce a vote).

This initiative will now be discussed in the parlament and then be put up to vote. I don't think (and surely don't hope) that they will be successful as I'm sure there's enough interest (and therefore money) in the industry against it.

I hope they are not successful too, because I consider Switzerland as the perfect country and this will blemish it.

However, there is an increasing anti-car trend in Europe which we,as car fans, don't like at all.

If you look at this tendency positively, as an opportunity, it will force manufacturers to innovate more quickly.

Just prepare yourself... next step no more sports cars, just tiny econo-boxes. It's a slippery slope.

Re: Switzerland considering extremely tough anti-c

As a foreigner living in Switzerland I can confirm. I would not like to drive an SUV anymore in Swizerland. People are getting very negative and even hostile towards them. Same actually for the rest of Europe.

Strangely nobody bothers if you drive a RS6 or anything and luckily alos not against sport cars so far...

Re: Switzerland considering extremely tough anti-c

The CO2 gr/km are a function of the distance (km or miles) covered by a given car.

So if I own a Murcielago and cover 8,000km in year I pollute less in aggregate than a Ford Fiesta that does 80,000km especially if the Fiesta is not well maintained, which is often the case with small cheap cars.

So an idea would be to choose whatever car you like but restrict the annual distance allowed in the case of big polluters.

Re: Switzerland considering extremely tough anti-c

Living in switzerland i do not see any evil look against SUVs. Here it snows a lot and SUVs are most of the times the nicer way to get around in winter, this is at least what i see in my region. Switzerland has one of the highest concentration of nice cars per person on the whole europe so i think this law could find hard opposition.

In this country the people with money rulez and they still like super powerful SUVs and sportcars.

    Let's see

Re: Switzerland considering extremely tough anti-c

As silvershadow states, it's ironic that such proposals come from a country where there's the biggest concentration of big-engined cars you're likely to see anywhere...

Passing an E-class in Germany, it'll most likely be 220 CDI whereas in Switzerland, it'll be the 500, pass an Audi and you'll have to be lucky for it not to be an S/RS-modell...

I'm pretty confident such initiatives won't find the support necessary to succeed (fingers crossed)

Re: Switzerland considering extremely tough anti-car l

Isn't Switzerland part of the EU? If so, the law if passed would require approval by the EU?

Re: Switzerland considering extremely tough anti-car l

No they're not part of the EU.

We take that as a compliment

Re: Switzerland considering extremely tough anti-car l

Well...the only reason why to join EU is to bankrupt the country....

Yes but Switzerland, has been offering some unique fianancial services to certain type of persons from the rest of the world, so it pays the country to be out of whatever Union (either economic or political) in order to act as a free agent without abiding to rules and regulations.

I don't think Switzerland would be so isolationist if it was producing only tasty chocolates and coockoo clocks.

Re: Switzerland considering extremely tough anti-car l

Let's say that switzerland has the attitude of being on its own since it was built up. People love that since they do not like to mix too much.

I don't see nothing ironic about that, Switzerland was always one of the first contries to adopt "green" laws

Re: Switzerland considering extremely tough anti-c

socialism is slowly eating europe... scary... im so sure they will easily collect the signatures
