    oil change

How many of you change your own oil? 06-CS. I like working on my cars/tractors,but have not done anything to the P car. If so, what are your tips for oil change.
    thanks,

It's very easy and satisfying. Which car do you have? Here is a detailed description of 996 (very similar to 997). Looks like 997.2 will have oil filter on top of the motor (even easier to change):

    Re: oil change

I jack up the rear of the car on the pass. side using proper jack pad with floor jack, otherwise my drain pan is too deep to allow access to drain plug. Drain plug is metric hex, I'm pretty sure 10mm, or possibly 8mm.Filter housing easily removed with a strap style wrench, or you could get a "cup" style wrench. New filter comes with o-ring for filter canister, be sure to replace. I just hand tighten canister and give it a few more degrees with wrench.Oil fill must be done slowly to avoid spillage out of vents at end of fill pipe. Special funnel available from Assenmacher Specialty Tools that screws in like fill cap (rather pricey, about $75.00 US) not really needed.I add about 8 1/2 qts, run vehicle and then re-check at least an hour or so later, topping off as needed. I get filters and jack pad from Automotion/Performance products. Jack pad approx $35(get 2) filters $11.00 ea)

    Re: oil change

That triggers this question in me... where's the right place to jack up a 997 (ie where do I apply the floor jack) and what can be used as a 'pad'... would a good piece of wood be sufficient?

You can get a jack pad that fits into the bottom of the car at http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ksea...mber=PEL-JP-001

However, there is no need to jack up the car on a 996 or 997 to change the oil. You can just drive the rear wheels up on a couple boards (just need to raise the rear enough to slide under it - a few inches).

Having a good jack and jack stands is great for brake work and many other things though...

    Re: oil change

My driveway is slightly angled. I jack the car up enough to slide 2 18 inch 2X12s under each rear wheel(I don't like jack stands!). If the angle is off, I'll slip a 2X12 under each front wheel as well. This gets the car plenty high for my 230+lb frame to slide under to access the oil filter and drain plug.

Found this which may help. My jacking points on my '06 997 C2S look slightly different but are in the same place.

    Re: oil change

I use a floor jack to slightly raise the car. I use a hockey puck (99 cents) to protect the undercoating. I jack it up just enough to get my custom made 911 oil draining container underneath the plug, and then take my handy 8mm allen socket on a 1/2 inch drive rachet to loosen up the plug. I just did mine the other evening,--oil but not the filter this time. It took about 7.5 quarts to get it back to "full."

For an oil container I take a clean 5-gallon paint (plastic) container and cut it down and then scribe on the side of it in quarts so I know how much I pulled out of the engine.

Anyone know if Pelican Parts is going to get product lines for the 997 series, as all their stuff is at best 996 (up to 2004) ?

The link that I posted specifically indicates this part is for 997 also:

"Jack Lifting Plate (w/o Storage case), 993, 996, 997, Boxster"

I can confirm this as I have one and it definitely works with my 997

    Re: oil change

I use ramps and just back the car up onto the ramps and then change it....

Re: oil change -- thank you !

thanks to all of you for your tips/advice on oil change. Looks simple ,,while paying attention to the items you pointed out.

Re: oil change -- thank you !

Sorry but I need to ask a couple of questions. Changing engine oil BY YOURSELF, isn't this gonna void the warranty of your car? If the car is not connected to an online system that registers the oil change who's gonna believe you had the oil changed when you try to sell the car? Maybe I am missing something here, i apologize if I am.

No, it won't void the warranty, as long as you used Porsche-approved oil. Just keep records of all of your maintenance (with dates, mileage, and receipts) and the next owner will be very happy (especially if you change oil more often than factory recommendation).

Re: oil change -- thank you !

    Precisely!!!!

Pete Smith of the Porsche Club of America (recommend that those in the U.S. join this group - it is inexpensive and you get a 10% discount on parts, with proof of membership, from Porsche dealers) said that as long as you document what you have done, the warranty will not be made invalid.

I will wait until mine runs out to start doing the oil and filter changes myself, which are easy enough if you run both the front and rear wheels up onto 2 x 4's or onto a 2 x 8 or 2 x 12. Keep the car level. Get yourself the filter and gasket kit from the dealer and replace the oil with any of those approved by Porsche (Mobil 1 is not the only synthetic oil that Porsche approves, so get the list of those approved oils and replace your oil with one of those).

    Jim
