    Porsche Motorsport Rumors

Anyone know if there are any truth to Porsche pulling out of the ALMS LMP2 with the RS Spyder. I was watching speedvision and Dave De Spade said that since Acura will be in LMP1, Porsche will end the RS Spyder program and will not be entering in any prototype racing in 2009! I hope this is true. When will Porsche release their plans for 2009?

    Re: Porsche Motorsport Rumors

They have just introduced a new DFI engine in the Spyder, so it seems a bit silly to do this if the intention is to pull out of prototype racing in the very near future.
Porsche were in LMP2 before Acura, so I don't really see the connection.
Next year's rule change for LMP2 is what is really at stake here. The ACO really want the LMP2 class to be "reserved" for totally private entries that have little or limited factory support. Furthermore, the ACO intend on restricting the diesels (making them slower) so as a result, they will also pull back the LMP2 class.
The question is , does Porsche continue in LMP2 with a program that is 100% private, or do they move into LMP1 (with a new car based on what they have learnt from the Spyder program). so far there have been no rumors pointing to the development of a LMP1 car.

If this year the Spyder wins the ALMS and the LMS and the LM 24hs IMO there is no point continuing with this car. There will be no value doing the same thing again at this lower level next year especially without any serious competition, if Acura leaves LMP2. Even if Acura is represented the Spyder will start being consistently beaten, so it is better to leave at the top.

Porsche should start a LMP1 effort especially for outright 24 hr victories or at least get back to winning the GT2 classes around the world.
When the Panamera Coupe appears they should also tackle GT1.

    Re: Porsche Motorsport Rumors

I agree with the LMP1 car.
It needs to be done but having said that, It needs to be done correctly.
The rules are still not 100% clear (although I'm sure that the manufacturers know more ) so until everyone knows exactly what the rules are, I don't suppose we will hear of anything.
On the other hand, I think WW see's LMP2 as a good market to sell turn-key race cars, so I wouldn't be surprised if they carry on in this category despite the reduction in performance.

    Re: Porsche Motorsport Rumors

I wouldn't be surprised if they really drop it. There is little point to compete with Audi in LMP1 and ACO is keen to move all manufacturers from LMP2 to LMP1

    Re: Porsche Motorsport Rumors

If they carry on in LMP2 it won't be in the same molds as with the Penske project. It will be 100% private.

which might not be as successful.

    Re: Porsche Motorsport Rumors

    No doubt!

I'm sorry I have taken so long to respond, but real life stepped in for a while.
The question here is : Does it make any marketing sense for PAG-VAG to have the only real sports car manufacturer (i.e. Porsche) not in LMP1 (Sports car racing)?

Also - Remember that according to some, the only reason that Audi came to sports car racing was because they negotiated with Porsche at the time for Porsche to drop the LMP1 car (the predecessor and racing version of the Carrera GT engine)in exchange for Porsche to use/share the Cayenne/Toureg platform.

    Re: Porsche Motorsport Rumors

Now that P owns VW/Audi and the rest of it, I imagine the groups motorsports effort is up for revision and I expect PAG to come up on top.

Remember also the year Audi did not take part in Le Mans to allow sister company Bentley to win?

It might be all fixed within the "Group"

    Re: Porsche Motorsport Rumors

Further news on the RS Spyder for 2009: No Van Merksteijn for 2009, but the team that actually ran the car (Equipe Verschuur)intend on racing the car in 2009 with new partner.

    Re: Porsche Motorsport Rumors

RS Spyder lose again this weekend.
Seem that the DFI doesn't work well.
ACURA always hold the best laptime in p2 class.
Porsche haven't go any advantage over acura this year.If they won't enter Lmp2 in 2009,they must beat acura this year to save face. It's a tough job for them.

In LMP2 cars are very even. It is a matter of strategy and luck. The winning margin today was less than 1 second.
Penske have a good lead in the points and unless they are very unlucky they wil retain the championship.

In GT2 RSRs had an 1-2 with Ferrari third.

That is not what happened... I just watched (on Speed) the (Tivoed) delayed broadcast of the Road America ALMS race. The race had too many yellows and many near the end - that made the race a sprint both in LMP1/LMP2 and GT2.

There was nothing wrong with the RS DFI engines. They performed flawlessly and used less gas - an advantage.

There's no question that the Acuras are strong and the Audis have an advantage on these long/fast tracks.

Re the RS Penske team... Roger was not there during that race...

In GT2 the Porsche/Ferrari battled has evened out and this time Porsche won in a dramatic finish.

    Re: Porsche Motorsport Rumors

There is a rumor circulating (from a usually credible source) that Porsche have a LMP1 currently undergoing testing.

    Re: Porsche Motorsport Rumors

Awesome, more info please! I hope they will announce something soon. Thanks

    Re: Porsche Motorsport Rumors

Unfortunately I don't have any further information.
I'll definitely post as soon as I know more.
Also - Remember that it is just a rumor at this point in time, although it is from a pretty "clued in" source in the sportscar world.

    Penske porshce is in trouble.
Several weeks ago, they were 40 point ahead. Now,they are still leading in LMP2 but only 4 point ahead.
