New car - how should it be driven

Hi all,

Just wondering how you should drive the new car once collected? Ive heard stories that you should not go above 5000RPMs for the first 2000miles

Is this true?

I would rather be safe than sorry - but also would be nice to open her up a bit.......

Any thoughts on this?

You won't go wrong with following the manual and what the factory or dealer tell you. There are two most important things in running-in and then operating the car for the future - 1) Correct oil level, 2) Carefully bringing the OIL temperature up to working temps

Besides that, there are about four different running-in procedures that people will list on this board:
1) By the book
2) Drive it like you stole it
3) Go easy first few hundreds of miles, then do what you want
4) Go easy first 1000 miles, then do what you want.

I did it by the book with strict adherence to the rules on warming up and then cooling down the car and my car performs fabulously. However, the engine kept on changing in character during each drive up to 8000 km. From then on it hasn't changed much, but it feels better and better. Today I have 14000 km and it is more explosive than for example at 10000 km.

2007 GT3.

Is your GT3 a daily driver at that mileage? I am getting a new 997 C2 for daily and am curious.

I vote for 'by the book' that comes with the car. Porsche has a slew of engineers working to design and test those cars and they know what the key things are to be avoided and have an interest in making sure their product runs a very long time without problems as their reputation is on the line.

Hi, GT3 is a "sunday morning" car. I drive it once a week, maybe twice if the stars are in correct alignment.
I thought it would be a daily car, but it doesn't work like that with the GT3. Not at this time and company location.

I could have a C2 for a daily driver, no doubt about it. In the end though, I have a BMW sedan for various reasons and the GT3 because of what it is.

I just got back from a drive today, I did 220 miles today over twisty canyon roads and the same route on Friday night, so I got my fill for this week.

The GT3 with its no-compromise character can be successfuly owned and not be driven every single day.

One more thing. Yesterday was saturday, but I didn't do any driving because I spent five hours cleaning the car with my understanding wife.

That's another thing that sort of conspires against it being used daily. I keep it as clean and shiny as I can, so if it rains and I have not driven out of the garage yet, I sometimes just stay in or use another car.

Don't keep the rev's at the same speed for long periods. Vary your speed if driving on the highway. I think that's in the manual though.

also heard you shouldnt drive short distances - what about
a. driving from my car parking spot a few yards to position it for washing and back?
b. driving to gym from work which is 2miles
would this damage the car?

As for the short distances, I think that doing it a few times and then going for a longer drive is ok. On the other hand, doing it on a daily basis is very bad. But I doubt anybody has a Porsche only to take it for two-minute drives.

The thing that I think is the worst is condensed gasoline in the cold engine contaminating engine oil. In that sense, I think it's better when manoeuvring the car to let it sit for a few minutes at idle and then turning it off.

There are also other negative side-effects to short drives, i.e. too many cold start-ups, battery going dead.

have some fun do a few blu road trips by the book vary the speed/rpm and youll be done ...no regrets doing it this way

Keep in mind that Porsche has a bigger problem with new-to-Porsche owners these days who tend to screw up their cars. As a result, they come to rely upon the black box that is installed in every car for engine usage. How many times did he blow through the redline, etc. Trust me, they will use that to their advantage in turning down a claim. It's all a part of today's litigious society. However, what you can do is to follow THEIR guidance. I did exactly what they told me at Zuffenhausen,--"keep it under 5000 rpms for the first 2000 miles" and then your'e cleared to redline. Vary your speeds,--avoid using the cruise control for any length of time. Also, the common sense issue about slow warmups is important.

It took me in excess of 25,000 miles to break in my engine, most likely due to the very slick oil (Mobil 1 0W-40 weight) that is the factory fill,--the engine just doesn't wear. My oil usage was way up there, sucking down a full quart every thousand miles. Now it is getting at least 6000 miles to the quart. My engine performance is higher, too, once broken in.The seat-of-the-pants tells me that.
