Re: New Lotus (project name Eagle) is called EVORA

I can't get over the fact that it has a Toyota engine. It seems to me like I'm buying a souped-up Toyota with a Lotus badge on it since the engine is the "heart" of a car.

Re: New Lotus (project name Eagle) is called EVORA

Car companies constantly teetering on insolvency cannot afford to engineer and build their own engines. Hey , a Toyota engine is better than an Isuzu engine , which is what the early 90s Elan used. Their cars have always been about handling and never about the motor , anyway.
Need I remind you that what some ( including me ) call the greatest sportscar of the past two decades , the McLaren F1 ,used a modified BMW motor !

993S, It has always been like this here. I'm already used to it. Just keep on going

    Re: New Lotus EVORA

looks excellent, rear seats are a joke though.

Re: New Lotus (project name Eagle) is called EVORA

Well, Lotus has always been a chassis-only builder, they never had an engine of their own. I bet the Toyota engines come into play because they are ultra-reliable and also cheap, since they are made in such large numbers. The same can also be said for Ford. It's a shame the Lotus doesn't have a Cosworth engine, it would instantly be more attractive. Even if Cosworth is now owned by Audi, I think.

I have to say, though, that the only time I drove a Lotus was an Elise with the stronger version of the 1,8 Rover engine and I didn't have a reason to complain.

I also wrote somewhere else that the Evora should have at least 300 hp from a 3,5 liter unit. 280 is a very plain Jane number. Just look at the pictures. It's supposed to be a junior supercar. How can you park that next to a stupid-in-comparison car like the 135i and have less power?

Re: New Lotus (project name Eagle) is called EVORA

suprised by the reactions on here actually...

IMO a great looking car and much better value than any of its rivals.

As for the engine, yes its a toyota but dont forget the engine will be remapped and tuned by lotus. I highly doubt the engine will feel anything like how it feels in a camray or whatever!

The Exige also has a Toyota unit and that is a cracking little car... Yes it would be better with a 6cyl or V^ or something with a bit more soul but it would also be a lot more expensive!

Going to the motor show on Sunday and looking forward to seeing this in the metal... Hopefully I will getting a new toy in 09 and at the moment its looking like a pick of this the GTR or a used 997 / Cayman...

    True points.
I own an Elise with a Toyota/Yamaha_tuned engine (therefore often synonymical named "Yota engine") and the engine is one of the few parts on the car that IS reliable. Built quality of a Lotus is bad to say the least.

Lotus cars have always been more about lightness, handling and driving dynamics than sheer horsepower (the latter often results in adding heavier components to the package) BUT 280 PS in a sportscar that will only go on sale next year is still disappointing! Even Porsche's Cayman S (which costs approximately the same) will be boosted to 315-320 PS by then, and we all know that Porsche isn't very bounteous either when it comes to horsepower.
The Evora isn't a lightweight masterpiece either, even if Lotus is trying to market it as such. The days when a car maker could develop a car that weighed as light as the early Elises are over. Just have a look at their circuit car, the 2-Eleven, or KTM's new X-Bow. Both weigh in at 745-780 kg and they don't even have doors, roof or radiator!
Many lightweight engines (like the "unreliable" Rover engine (which isn't built anymore anyway) don't comply with today's (and tomorrow's) EURO-5 (&6) norm(s). Then there are many other safety regulations that need to be met (pedestrians etc). And let's not forget that in the end, it's the customers that demand all this!

Still....I hope for Lotus, that the built quality better be improved!

It actually is, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89vora, and a very beautiful one.

    New Lotus EVORA

The last pictures are really good. The car keeps growing on me. Not yet enough to buy though. I will wait to test-drive, see fit and finish and who knows. One thing is certain. If finish is ok I would much prefer it over a Cayman.

Of all the names starting with an E they chose this one.
It's a shame but it would not stop me from buying one.

Even if it could compete favourably with the current Cayman models (which of course we don't know yet), I don't think that there can be a contest with the early 2009 version with 320HP, PDK, Sport Chrono Plus and LSD.

Another problem with under-funded manufacturers like Lotus is that they are slow to react to new technology and there is little or no evolution in the lifetime of a model.
