So the 'all-new' 911 is even more of a joy when sampled with a manual gearbox. A Carrera S manual remains the favoured dream garage specification. The problem for Porsche? Those last two sentences would have read entirely differently if they'd sorted the toggles.

I'm still baffled by the stupidity of these toggles. They look like giant nipples.

First, they don't. I don't like them either but because of other reasons(read our review). If you say they look like nipples, maybe your wife/girlfriend should get plastic surgery because there is definetely something wrong.

To be serious: I don't know what Tom Ford from Top Gear is driving privately but I get more and more annoyed by journalists who are testing a Porsche 911 and who then are driving home in a Volkswagen Golf. To be able to understand and appreciate a sportscar, you need to drive one in your spare time too.

"Unfortunately, the DFI means that there's an annoyingly tappetty chatter at idle speed, but apart from that, the news is all good from the upgrades"

The chatter is typical to the 911 and if you're sitting inside the car, you won't notice it.

"Best Porsche ever then? Ground-breaking PDK 'box, derived from 20-years of development renders every other effort second-best? Sorry, no. Part of the fun of a dual clutch is the ability to play with the paddles and do some flicking of the electronics yourself. But instead of lovely paddles behind the steering wheel, one for up on the right, one for down on the left, we have toggles."

If he recommends manual over PDK just because of the "toggles"(weird word), he has no clue what PDK means, even with the "toggles".
With the introduction of PDK, Tiptronic and manual are DEAD in my opinion. The PDK buttons on the steering wheel may not be the best solution for changing the gears but even the paddles on BMW's DKG have their downside, so apparently car companies and engineers are still looking for the perfect solution. Like I said before, i would love to see some sort of long and half circled thin paddle right behind the steering wheel(following the shape of the steering wheel), a left one for downshifting and a right one for upshifting. Or just forget about buttons and leave a "virtual" gear changer where the manual shifting stick is, just without a clutch and without the long shifting way of a manual shifting system.

    Re: TopGear Review

Tom Ford is the blond, shaggy haired fat guy on Fifth Gear. Even if he is making a serious point, he does it jokingly in a humorous way. It's hard to treat his opinion with much weight. Much of what he has written could easily have been cobbled together by re-hashing what other journalists have already written. At least he does give somewhat detailed driving impressions though...

    Re: TopGear Review

It just occurred to me _again_ that the Toggles are intended to be more attractive than paddles to women drivers and non-track, non-racing, non-TRUE-car nuts.

Think of the average new Porsche buyer. The tiptronic was what they were used to.

Can you imagine Paris Hilton or Jennifer Aniston being happier with the little cute buttons or the wicked Batman paddles?

Contrary to what you imagine, I've heard that these two girls have put orders for the new Ferrari California, in spite of the paddles.

I've always thought he was a waste of space on car shows. Useless on cars, and very un-funny as well.

Everyone has their tastes I suppose, but manual shift is far from dead to the entire world of drivers. The PDK is just not a viable option to me and a lot of drivers who feel differently from you. To spend that kind of money to be more disconnected from the driving experience is worse than just burning the money for the gearbox.

    Re: TopGear Review

It is efficiency (PDK) against soul (manual) ... now you make the choice ;-)

    Cheers
    Tom

    Re: TopGear Review

After my first weekend of driving the PDK, I have to say I sort of agree with Rookie - its efficiency versus soul. Having said that, I didn't think I was a bad driver with a manual gearbox, but the PDK has me way faster in every situation and that's just left in "D". I was on some twisty roads outside London at the weekend and despite not pushing the car at the moment with only 200 miles on the clock, it was significantly faster point to point than the old manual car. The gearbox just has a knack of making sure it can deliver power when you need it, even if it does have the uncanny habit of droping to 6th or 7th and burbling along at 1500 rpm when you're not pushing on.

If was at all sceptical, my fears were banished when I got stuck for 45 minutes in horrendous traffic coming back into London from the Motor Show in East London. Then the 911 was as relaxing as being in a Merc Limo (as relaxing as sitting in a traffic jam can be!).

I'm sensing a few gremlins in the PCM software - don't know if anyone else is having the same problems. Have to disconnect the ipod and reconnect every time I start the car or it doesn't recognise it, plus its gone into re-boot on a couple of occasions, oh and the VTS isn't working properly so I get a call from them every time I move off. At least I know the system works!
