    PDK with paddles?

A friend of mine test drove a 997.2 PDK in an OPC in the London area.

Obviously, the matter of buttons vs.paddles arose in the context of the conversation with the sales person. It was not as if my friend found anything wrong with buttons or challenged the sales person about them, but the sales person said to him that there is a rumour that paddles will be introduced as from next MY.

Do you give any credence to such a rumour?

I want to say yes only because I hope it's true. If true though I wouldnt want to be the guy that has waited all this time for PDK, buys one now w/ shifter buttons only to have a paddle system come out.

    Re: PDK with paddles?

Heard the same rumour... (someone from the industry-pool at the Nordschleife told me) Hope it is true.

    Re: PDK with paddles?

Hopefully before the time the 998 is being sold it will be a true fact and not rumor.

    Re: PDK with paddles?

I wouldn't be surprised if the GT models come with a more race-bred shifting mechanism, a system one could obtain for the regular cars for a premium.

anything can be done for a premium

    Re: PDK with paddles?

Of course... that will be order guide option "PDK / OOPS" ; price Euro 2350. (5350 if leather covered).

Not everybody likes the buttons, not everybody likes the huge shifting stick which actually looks like a Tiptronic version. Both issues have been discussed at Porsche but I doubt that the 997 will see any changes. There are rumours that the 997 GT3 FL gets paddles instead of the buttons but it remains to be seen, same applies to the 997 Turbo FL. Both cars get very likely engines based on the current Carrera DI engine, as sad as this may be because this means the end of the "bulletproof" 993/GT1 engine block, also called Metzger engine. It is too expensive to develop a DI engine based on this engine.

    Re: PDK with paddles?

It will be a sad day when the GT1 engine dissappears. Unfortunately that day is on the horizon...

    Re: PDK with paddles?

RC, I see from your signature - you replaced your wife's 987S with a BMW M3 Cab DKG? Congrats man

Yes, thanks. Wife wanted more space for kids, I wanted something AT LEAST as fast as the Boxster S. First we wanted to go for a 997 Carrera Cab FL but due to the limited room in the rear, it wasn't possible. Also the car was almost 20000 EUR more than the M3, another huge buying decision maker. The M3 has DKG, Vmax raise to 280 kph(GPS measurement at 291 kph, speedo shows 308), carbon structure leather(looks VERY nice), Navi Pro, etc., very nice car and very fast. Like I mentioned in my short review compared to the 997 Carrera Cab FL, the M3 is fast as hell but doesn't feel like it. This may be actually a good thing for most drivers but it isn't as much fun as driving the 997 Carrera Cab FL.

    Re: PDK with paddles?

I want to ask if it's at al possible to reverse the right toggle shifting assignment- I want to push for downshift and pull for upshift.

That will make it like SMG/DKG/DSG/F1 paddle shifter.

    Re: PDK with paddles?

This is what I want .

Ahaha! There's always someone who's gotta go one better. That's what gave us 20inch wheels.

    Re: PDK with paddles?

LOL - If it was detachable for dealing out blows to back seat drivers or annoying passengers it would be perfect!

I bet Porsche could make one that even looks ... Porschey!

    Re: PDK with paddles?

Interesting. If the paddles are large, it may make it a lot easier to upshift and downshift in high-speed or sharp turns - easier to find with one's hands during such maneuvers. With the buttons, your hands have to stay on the same part of the wheel, but I understand that the buttons- on both sides of the wheel, can be used to either upshift or downshift. I'm not sure that paddles would allow this - one, usually the left one, would be for downshifts while the right one would be for upshifts, unless, as someone above said, that you could push or pull the paddle.
