    997 Brake discs corroded!!!!

Guys - just looking for some quick advice.

Computer was signalling 'service due' so took my C2S in for first 'major' service this morning. Should be at 40K miles or 4 years. Mine's only done 27K miles but will be 4 years old in October.

Just got a call from OPC to say my brake discs are corroded and need replacing. Pads will also have to be re-newed so the cost of this will be Pounds850+ for fronts and Pounds750+ for rears.

When I questioned the reason they said it's quite common on low mileage cars.

I drive the car most days, albeit not often long distances, and always make sure the brakes are dried following washes.

Is this situation reasonable in your opinions?? Thanks guys.

    Re: 997 Brake discs corroded!!!!

I think your OPC is trying to make a bit of money from you. At 27K only the pads should be worn and not the Disc, unless you've been using a corossive chemical to clean the alloys

    Re: 997 Brake discs corroded!!!!

Are the rotor vent channels corroded? If there's a thick layer of rust I believe that can lead to less efficient cooling. Can you clean them out if necessary? Otherwise I never heard of brakes so badly corroded and needing replacement unless the car is an old TR or MG and has been parked outside for a few months.

How do you dry the brakes? By driving the car? The other thing, I use serious compressed air to blow the brake dust out of those vent channels and THEN flood with water then _drive_ the car to dry. Not a commonplace practice but I guess too much dust and not enough drying might be a problem for some?

Sounds like they're BS-ing a bit. Do you notice bad brake performance?

It will most probably be surface rust.
So, I would drive the car extensively on a route requiring plenty of braking. After that, I would see if there was any change to the discs and re-evaluate the situation. I wouldn't spend the money blindly.

    Re: 997 Brake discs corroded!!!!

Just a thought but maybe get some brake cleaner spray, spray them well, and THEN drive. If there's rusty contamination there on rotors and pads somehow it can't hurt, AFAIK.

    Re: 997 Brake discs corroded!!!!

post a picture - lets have a look...

    Re: 997 Brake discs corroded!!!!

You should be able to remove surface rust/corrosion with some hard braking....the main reasons to replace a disk are:
    1)Disk below minimum spec thickness
    2)Cracks
3)Being warped, typically not a street issue, but can occur on the track when the disks get very hot, particularly in a hot climate and not cooled properly

    Re: 997 Brake discs corroded!!!!

I agree with Italo, John. I would get a second opinion before shelling out the cash...

    Re: 997 Brake discs corroded!!!!

    John,

    Don't spend ya money yet.

Just to add to what 964C2 said insofar as cracking is concerned.

You don't need to replace the rotors if they are showing slight cracking. It's called crazing and mine are nearly ready for replacement and this is because I nearly have a crack exceeding 5/8mm on 40-50% of vent holes. The independent advice I've had is that when the cracks start to join then that's when your should be looking at replacements, but also keeping an eye on the cracking generally.

I got a quote recently for Original Porsche Rotors for my '06 C2S (should be the same for you as they are a 996 ref part) and not OEM versions.

Porscheshop can do a front set for Pounds122.00 + VAT each, and including delivery and VAT they can do a set for Pounds300.00. They are Original Porsche Parts also.

I believe the part Number for the left and right are.

    * 996.351.409.02
    * 996.351.410.02

Everywhere else I tried quoted OEM, Zimmerman etc. You can get OE Zimmerman for Pounds167.50 + VAT for the pair if you're not bothered about them being official and original Porsche Parts.

    Hope this helps.

I have some pics somewhere of my rotors with the cracking and I'll post em if I can find them.

    Here they are -

    Re: 997 Brake discs corroded!!!!

I drive a VW Jetta in the winter, so it sits for about 7-8 months a year, unfortunately, outside on my driveway. Every 2 years, I have to replace my brake discs, despite putting very little mileage on them. They become corroded and pitted. VW does not recommend "machining" them, so the only solution is replacement. It pisses me off, but thankfully is much cheaper than replacing Porsche discs.

    Re: 997 Brake discs corroded!!!!

Very interesting and useful post ResB Thanks

Always happy to oblige Easy, when ever I can that is.

    Re: 997 Brake discs corroded!!!!

First of all can I say many thanks for all the advice.

Unfortunately I had to make a pretty much instant decision because the OPC described the condition of the brakes as 'dangerous'. Also, I will be spending the next few days driving to and from Birkdale for the Open Golf Championship. Really didn't want any mishaps with that!

I gave the go ahead just in time to get my car back today. It really was a pressure situation and, from some of your comments, my hasty decision could well be flawed.

They faxed me copies of the photographs I asked for (see below) and, to my untrained eye, the discs looked bad.

Having now seen the post from ResB, it seems I could well have been ripped off...the total bill, including the service, totalled Pounds2218.82.

I'm not going to leave it there and will be compiling a letter to the OPC's top man demanding an inquest. But before I do so could you Rich, or anyone, please give me an opinion based on the photos they took.

Thanks guys....this is a great community.

    Re: 997 Brake discs corroded!!!!

    and rear...

    Re: 997 Brake discs corroded!!!!

Can you get the actual 'corroded' discs they replaced? Rather than just the lousy photos?

    Re: 997 Brake discs corroded!!!!

    John,

Looking at the images it's pretty difficult to say with any conviction, considering of course I am no technician (mind you, the one's I've met at the OPC's aren't much better ) then I'd have to say the vent holes are filled and they do look like they need replacing...

Providing they are your discs and not pictures of the ones the Porsche Technicians use to trouble shoot disc problems! then there looks to be some very strange markings on the discs.

Were the pads shot as well? It is usual to change the pads at the same time as the discs to be fair but not always necessary, unless the the pads are what's causing the problems of the discs themselves.

Assuming of course the rear discs are the same as the front in terms of cost then you have circa. Pounds600 for the discs. (The rears 996.35.405.00 and 996.352.406.00 are usually a little cheaper, maybe Pounds10 to Pounds20 each)

I think the Pads are part No -

    Front 996.351.949.12
    Rears 996.351.949.03

and are about Pounds60 a set x 4 = Pounds240.00 Add Shims and bolts which they should have replaced, say another Pounds40.00

So, Price for Pads and Disc around the Pounds880.00 mark (Incl. VAT & Delivery)

I don't know how much your service was but lets say it was Pounds550.00 that means they charged you about Pounds790 for labour and perhaps new brake fluid.

Personally, I think you could change the pads and discs in 30 minutes each wheel, it is a really easy job to do, so that's 2 hours in total...and thats nearly Pounds400/hr....

Somethings not right John it really isn't...even at Pounds150/hr that nearly 51/2 hours labour (if the service cost was right)

Hope that helps a little John.

    Re: 997 Brake discs corroded!!!!

Gotta tell ya Buddy..., I've never seen brakes with the vent holes loaded with dust like that. Not that I'm an expert but now I'm not extremely surprised that they said what they said.

    Re: 997 Brake discs corroded!!!!

    The workshop manual states -

When replacing Pads you must replace in addition to the pads -

    Quote:
Fit new expanding spring, new retainer pin and new retainer on the brake calliper.

When replacing the Discs you must -

    Quote:
Replace the brake calliper fastening screws each time they are removed.

Thanks very much for your time Rich.

The breakdown of charges goes like this:-

    Service cost - Pounds463.15 + VAT = Pounds544.20 Labour time 2.5 hrs

    Brake fluid - Pounds103.15 + VAT = Pounds132.95 Labour time 0.8 hrs

    Front Brakes - Pounds704.89 + VAT = Pounds828.25 Labour time 1.4 hrs
    (discs..Pounds133.57 each, pads..Pounds163.41.. sensors..approx Pounds40)

    Rear Brakes - Pounds617.17 + VAT = Pounds725.17 Labour time 1.6 hrs
    (discs..Pounds121.46 each, pads..Pounds122.29.. sensors..approx Pounds20)

There were also damping plates at a total cost of Pounds105.72

BTW - Labour cost works out at Pounds110 per hour.

I asked how come discs & pads required at 27,000 miles with no tracking of car, used most days and always dried when washed etc. The response was that surface rust had eaten into the discs and gradually, over the years, caused pitting and corrosion.

I asked whether just putting new pads on then engaging in some serious braking would cure the problem? Reply was the discs would "just chew up the new pads!"

Apparently it was all my fault for NOT being hard enough on my brakes in the first place!!

I'm still not convinced. I've had seven Porsches and many other cars over the past 30 years, some with much higher mileages, and never any problems with discs or brakes in general.

I will be writing that letter...

    Re: 997 Brake discs corroded!!!!

    Ya welcome fellow enthusiast.

Whilst I write, now that you have stopping power are you coming to the Ring on the 29th, 30th and 31st of August. Can't remember if I asked you already!!! Senior moment I think.

    Re: 997 Brake discs corroded!!!!

Sorry Rich... will be working too hard then ready for my next holiday first two weeks in September.

I'll get there sometime - just a matter of timing..

    Re: 997 Brake discs corroded!!!!

    No Problem, enjoy your break.

    Re: 997 Brake discs corroded!!!!

Something is not right here. It is possible that pads can be worn out with 27K miles, but discs should not be unserviceable, especially if there is no excessive wear on the disc.

27K miles in 4 years, with reasonably frequent driving, should not result in rusted discs, nor can it be described as a low mileage car.

Looks like defective components and someone is trying to take advantage of you.
