    How long?

Just wondering how long it takes a 911 to be built from scratch?

Do they then test it or something?

Is there any links to read?

    Re: How long?

    anyone know this

Not sure how long, but my dealer said about 3 weeks from build date until it hits the dealer in the UK

    Re: How long?

    Also....

Slightly off topic but i don't know if you have sorted out insurance yet ?

I got a great quote from Porsche Insurance.... The big advantage with them is that windscreen replacement is done by main dealer not Autoglass .....

Autoglass did my 968 in the past and made such a cods of it....It invalidated the 10 year warranty on the body work....

    Re: How long?

I havent sorted my insurance yet - just cancelled my old car insurance (sold car) - lost over 200quid (over half the original cost) only had insurance for 1.5 months!!!!

Is it worth getting quotes now? I dont know exactly when I will be getting car. What price have you been quoted?

    Re: How long?

actually it only takes 1-3 days for a 911 to be built from scratch. the engine for example takes under an hour to be completely put together.
then, every porsche is being test-driven for some 12-20km up and down the autobahn before it's being handed over to the customer...

Most quotes are good for 30 days.... They gave me a quote of Pounds730 with full no claims one speeding ticket and car garaged .... I am 36 years old

    Re: How long?

I've just done the quote to change from my 2008 C4S to 2009 C2S and despite a drop in the value of the cars they have quoted me Pounds125 increase for the last quarter of the year or approximately a Pounds500 increase in the overall policy. I have no idea why this is and I'm effectively stuck because if I cancel the policy now with under 3 months remaining there is no refund.

I have complained to Porsche GB and am waiting for a response.

    Re: How long?

Just wondering how I go about enquiring about Porsche Insurance to get a quote? Ta

    Give this number a try:- 01462 428150

    Taken from porsche website

    Re: How long?

    oops thanks

    Re: How long?

One fact that I remember is that it took 9 times longer to build the 964 version (1989-1994) of the 911 which was the last of the fully hand-built cars than it took to build the first of the water-cooled cars (1999+)

    Re: How long?

FWIW, "assembled" is a better word than "built." All the component parts for your car arrive at factory about the _same day_ that they are assembled into your car. It' a new kind of manufacturing which relies on pinpoint delivery of parts from numerous suppliers and does not rely on huge warehousing of parts. Forgot what it's called.

The engine parts take a whole day to assemble and supposedly one guy is solely responsible and does the whole thing by hand.

Read this stuff when I bought my 986S back in 2003, maybe it's different now? I doubt it.

    It's called "just-in-time".

    Re: How long?

Thanks Fritz. Oh yeah..., aka "JIT," right? HaHa.

    Re: How long?

i see cool - so the engine is handbuilt? and the body is robot built?

engine is assembled in sth like 90 0r 120 min. and not by one guy but by like 5 or 6 people. It goes in a relatively small circle (assembly line) and one guy after another finishes his steps within several minutes...
just saw that during the factory tour last October when i picked up my car...

    Re: How long?

They must of changed the process.. our group was told that one person assembled the engine - and that's what we saw when I picked up my "baby" nearly 2 years ago.

    Re: How long?

They build about 75 a day from pre completed components. The whole robot built and painted body shell being one of the. I took a tour of the factory a few years ago, very cool.

Yes Richard, that's the same process I observed (though 2.5 years ago - aaarghh time is flying by ). If I recall correctly, the GT1-derivates were assembled by two guys, all other engines by one guy.

    Not actually true.

The first thing that is done is that the vehicle is welded together by a series of robots in the welding shop. Then it is sent over via the overhead body carrier to the main assembly area where it enters the paint shop. It's painted, and then allowed to dry.

From a fully cured body shell it is a 55 minute operation to assemble a 911. The engine is manufactured concurrently,--and takes 1 hour and 25 minutes to assemble. During the 55 minute assembly process the engine and transaxle are mated to the car.

When the car is finished it is driven over to a holding area, awaiting shipment.

Porsche no longer test drives these cars, routinely. They pull one arbitrarily off the line to ensure that their tolerances are being maintained,--but it's not that often.

True. With daily production of circa 160 911's this is no longer viable..
