Porsche 997 RSR with 4.0L engine

Porsche won the GT2 class battle at Lime Rock this weekend. Three of the GT2 Porsches - the Werner/Westbook car, the Flying Lizard Johannes van Overbeek/Patrick Pilet Porsche and the Bergmeister/Henzler Porsche, were all outfitted with a new 4.0 liter engine, which develops the same horsepower as the current 3.8 liter engine. The engine, still in its testing phase, is designed to improve drivability by widening the power band.

Re: Porsche 997 RSR with 4.0L engine

Very interesting, perhaps we will see this evolve into the next gen of uber 911 engines?

Re: Porsche 997 RSR with 4.0L engine

    I have no doubt.
I'm very interested in knowing the homologation details around this. I could be wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if the next 997 GT3 has a 4.0L engine.

Re: Porsche 997 RSR with 4.0L engine

They are reaching the pinnacle of developing the flat 6... they may be able to sqeeze another percent out of it here and there a little more torques, a a little more hp, a little better efficiency...

But after 4.0 litres, the configuration is no longer efficient...

I bet you would also have said that when they went to 3.6 liters out of the flat 6 boxer configuration, if internet fora had been in existence then.

I bet 4L boxers will be in the next 11 generation. And they will squeeze out more than 1% in performance - more like 10%.

Re: Porsche 997 RSR with 4.0L engine

Doesn't this engine package have DFI technology or is it just a larger displacement?

Re: Porsche 997 RSR with 4.0L engine

The most efficient displacement for a normally aspirated 6cyl motor is much less than 2.5L (best for HP/L), but I think the 4.0L could be interesting. I wonder if this new race motor is using the new (non-GT1) block?

It's 500 ccm / cylinder, therefore 2 litres for four and 3 litres for six-cylinder engines.

Porsche Teams Look to Expand LMP2, GT2 Leads in Ohio

    (16 July 2008)

Only days after fierce competition at Lime Rock Park, where the Porsche and Acuras did LMP2 battle and the Porsche and Ferraris tangled in GT2, the American Le Mans Series moves to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, for the Acura Sports Car Challenge.

    GT2

In the GT2 class for production-based sports cars, Porsche teams launch into the second half of the season leading the championship points. Multi-time ALMS champion Joerg Bergmeister and his teammate Wolf Henzler (both Germany) won not only in Sebring and Salt Lake City this season but also at Lime Rock last weekend with the #45 Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. Lizard team drivers Johannes van Overbeek (USA) and Patrick Pilet (France), along with the third pairing of Seth Neiman (USA)/Lonnie Pechnik (USA) will round out that team's Porsche entries.

The GT2 pole-sitters from Lime Rock, the Farnbacher Loles Racing Porsche 911 GT3 RSR of Dirk Werner (Germany) and Richard Westbrook (Great Britain), is coming off its fine second-place finish last weekend. And the VICI Racing Porsche 911 GT3 RSR returns to the series after a one-race hiatus, with Nicky Pastorelli and brother Francesco Pastorelli (The Netherlands) at the helm.

Starting the race at Lime Rock Park, the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR car features a new four-liter engine with a further improved drivability.

Here is a comparison between the 3.8-liter engine and new four liter powerplant. The horsepower remains the same.

    997 GT3 RSR: 3.8 litre (MY08) vs 4.0 litre (MY09)

    Minimum weight: 1200kg vs 1200kg
    Displacement: 3795cc vs 3996cc
    Cylinders: 6 vs 6
    Valves/cylinder: 4 vs 4
    Bore: 102.7mm vs 102.7mm
    Stroke: 76.4mm vs 80.4mm
    Restrictor diameter: 29.5mm vs 29.3mm

Thanks for the link, I actually found my way through to the onboard videos!

I always thought the optimum was around 350cc which is the reason some F1 teams went to V10 motors with the 3.5L and then 3.0L max displacement rules...
