Has anyone done their own brakes on the 997 S ?

My 2005 997S has 29k miles on it and the brake wear light just came on. Planning on doing my own brake job, and wondering if it's the same as the 996 or if there is anything different? Anyone have a DIY guide for 997 brakes? Also did you replace the sticky pads on the back of the pads or just reuse the old ones ?

Sitting at 27,000 on mine,--no brake wear indications yet. Are you racing it a bunch?

No, not at all and I don't even drive the car very hard at all. I think this is the same mileage that my 996 needed new brakes.

You need to check if you need pads and rotors - probably pads only. Check the condition of the rotors in any case. You need to replace/bleed the brake fluid. If you have not done this before I recommend you seek help from someone who has done it a few times.

I had mine replaced about a week ago in my 997S. Only the front ones. All I know is that they are the same with 996TT. If I were you I would definitely do it at a local dealer though.

Re: Has anyone done their own brakes on the 997 S

I've done 33k miles and the pads still have about 50% on them. The rotors however are crazing now and have started cracking at the ventilation holes and filling with brake dust...

FYI - if you do any track driving, 50% thickness is when it's time to replace pads (they wear far quicker after that). If street only, you can go a little longer...

Re: Has anyone done their own brakes on the 997 S

Yes I was considering it. Rotors too.

Re: Has anyone done their own brakes on the 997 S

They're the same as doing a 996--pads are a different size (at least they were on my 996 Turbo which are the brakes now used on the 997 S). The only thing I noticed differently, is that Porsche did away with the plastic clip that clamps the brake wear sensor to the brake line, and instead, they run the brake sensor through the loop of the dust cap on the caliper bleeder valve. Cheap SOB's. That clip could not have cost two-bits and I don't like the sensor running through the dust cap loop-as I can no longer just take the end of my box end wrench and put it in the loop to lever off the dust caps which can be hard to pry off when your hands are sweaty/greasy. They left the clips on the rear brakes, however. Go figure.

As for a DIY, Trygve's boxster page shows all you need to know about brake jobs--and the 996/997 is the same. See the link below.

John, changing out the pads is so quick and easy you will not belive it. I can change the pads faster than taking the wheels off! Call me if you want me to coach your through it. 813-335-2937 Mike

THANKS ! That's perfect a DIY is what I was looking for. I'll be in Switzerland mountain biking around Zermatt for 3 weeks, but when I get back I'll do this job. Anyone in Zermatt want to loan me their 997 for a few days ????
