    engine misfiring

I have a vexing problem that has reoccured intermittenly over a two year period. I have '06 C2S CAB with 13K miles that when accelerating "bucks" like it is misfiring or starved for fuel. There were posts on this in April '06 but with no apparent solutions. The dealer only recently found faults and remapped the DME. It did not work. The check engine light does not come on. Am frustrated and would greatly appreciate your expert opinions.

    Re: engine misfiring

Just an immediate thought....have you had the ignition coils checked?

    Re: engine misfiring

Yes, supposed not a problem. Thanks for the reply

    Re: engine misfiring

Mine has done that on three separate occasions always shortly after a fillup. Thought it was gas cap not tightened properly, but never has been the case. Goes away after spitting and misfiring for about 10 minutes or so.. Must have something to do with the process of removing the cap or bad gas???

    Re: engine misfiring

I only use the same gas, different stations. Another point is that it only occurrs after running hot-- oil guage @ 225.This happens after heavy traffic, it is LA, or a mountain run. I do not overdo the revs.

    Re: engine misfiring

Same here and nobody has been able to tell me anything about the problem. It just bucks for about 10 minutes and goes away on its own. It only happens to me at part throttle as, if I open the throttle wide open, it accelerates without hesitation. Of course, one cannot be at WOT all the time and that is what makes this rare behavior upsetting when it happens.

    Re: engine misfiring

Tell your dealer to check the airflow sensor, a new one might just solve the problem.

    Re: engine misfiring

Thanks for the inputs. It's at the dealer now for the 5th time. I'll report back for the record.

    Re: engine misfiring

Can't wait to hear from you so that I can take it up to the dealer with a solidly based argument. Thanks for the report when you get to it!

    Re: engine misfiring

Many, many 997 owners have had this problem (including yours truly) and there have been several threads of the subject here and on Rennlist. The long and short of it is that (i) Porsche denies that any problem exists, (ii) typically, the problem just seems to cure itself, (iii) nobody knows what the problem is and (iv) the problem seems to go away completely as you get more miles on the car. That's all anybody really knows about this subject. You might as well stop bringing the car to the dealer beacuase they are not going to fix anything.

I really don't believe there is a self fixed car regarding any problem. I think there's something wrong either with the fuel quality or some part of the ECU. Don't forget the fact that a gas station that has its tanks almost empty SHOULD NOT sell any fuel until the tank is refilled. But who's gonna tell you that and let you go? Nobody I guess...

    Re: engine misfiring

An update--Fourth day the car is in the shop. Diagnosis underway, brief advice was looking at the "lifters and possible leaks." Certainly, not definitive but it appears a thorough review is underway. More to follow. Thanks for your postings

    Goergie: What's more probable:

    1. Hundreds (perhaps thousands) of 997 owners all over different parts of the world got bad gas and that caused their 997s to experience a lurch that went away when the bad gas was used up; or

    2. There is a problem with the 997 (perhaps in the ECU) that seems to correct itself.

The answer seems clear to me.

    Re: engine misfiring

i'd be looking at the thick " lemon law " booklet that comes with each car....personally id go along way to avoid having repeated non-productive trips to my local dealer....sorry your having to deal with something like this.

    Re: engine misfiring

I've experienced this twice over the couple years (nearly) that I have had the car. There is nothing to do with the state the fuel tank is in, nor anything else that I cn tell. It's completely arbitrary. However, I find it rediculous that Porsche, with all the testing they do, to never to have experienced this during testing, and to be in complete denial.

I consider it a safety issue,--with the way the engine bucks.

    Re: engine misfiring

Report back: Car returned today running well. Apparently a tear down with Sticky lifters and bores replaced on both banks. I'm not a mechanic --engine dropped, head off, removed cams, replaced seals, gaskets, oil, coolant etc. Had two misfiring instances in last 500 miles ( five in all.) Porche/ Dealer have addressed the issues. Hope it's over. Thanks for the comments/feedback.
