Rennteam drove the 997 Carrera S Facelift

Sorry, this is all I got for you now...a lousy picture.

I'm very busy right now, A LOT of work(work I actually get paid for, nothing to do with cars), so you guys need to wait for a full review incl. pictures around July 15th, sorry about that but I need time and I hardly had the time to prepare this cell phone picture and to upload it.

I promise, full review around July 15th.

    Preliminary note about the review:
    1. PDK is very nice(I'll have a comparison to the M3 DKG for those who are interested)
    2. 997 facelift front looks almost unchanged
    3. rear is nice, much better looking in reality than on pictures
    4. engine sound with original exhaust improved(verdict: VERY nice)
    5. throttle response improved

More to come around July 15th, sorry about that.

Re: Rennteam drove the 997 Carrera S Facelift

    Thanks RC for the teaser....

The improved sound makes me smile....since I have to wait a while for PSE availibilty...

Re: Rennteam drove the 997 Carrera S Facelift

Interesting, PDK car without Sport Chrono...

Re: Rennteam drove the 997 Carrera S Facelift

    Very cool RC, thanks .

    Yup! Good to hear.

We should have this tattooed to the inside of our eyelids.

Re: Rennteam drove the 997 Carrera S Facelift

did you get a chance to try the manual gear?

I'm afraid not. Just a 997 Carrera S Cab with PDK.
I may be able to testdrive a 997 Carrera S with manual at the end of this month but I have no fixed date yet.
    Porsche wants to sell PDK...

Nice one Im sick of hearing all the stuff about pdks and puddles now :P

Good to hear about the noise and the rear end looking better in real life.... (was a little worried by some of the pics of the rear)

Re: Rennteam drove the 997 Carrera S Facelift

Now could your perception of the improved sound be because you were testing a cab? OR is the actual exhaust note different??

thanks for the teaser, looking forward to your report!

Re: Rennteam drove the 997 Carrera S Facelift

Please note: exhaust sound for cab is distinctly different from coupe; at least for 997.1.

Re: Rennteam drove the 997 Carrera S Facelift

    Fantastic, loking foward to it!!

Whaaat i didnt know that... please explain!

Re: Rennteam drove the 997 Carrera S Facelift

Doesn't necessarily have to be on purpose... The way an exhaust sounds is defined by how it resonates. I guess that the resonance of a cab is slightly different from that of a coupe, simply because the body and thus the resonance frequencies of the car are different.

Re: Rennteam drove the 997 Carrera S Facelift

    ??

I'd heard that the mufflers on the cab were tuned a bit differently to enhance the aural pleasure of driving with the top down. My cab seems louder than a coupe -- both inside and out -- but can't say I've actually seen any evidence that itis somehow tuned differently. Whatever the case, I'm not sure I understand what the resonance of the car's body has to do with the exhaust note -- at least not in any way average (or even above-average) human ears could perceive.

Here's a 997.1 cab review. Dammit: I can't find whole article, but trust me (no kidding) it's from a reputable magazine that was posted here.

    Crock of sh*t

The part numbers for the exhaust system are the same for coupe or cab. Whoever told you that needs to stop smoking recreational chemicals.

    Re: Crock of sh*t

One of the greatest pleasures in owning a 997S Cab is to put the top and windows down and your foot to the floor. Cold start even better.

You could be right that they are tuned differently. However, one cannot look at the sound of the exhaust as a thing of the muffler only. The sound you hear is mainly dependant on the mass of the vibrating parts, and the car's body is part of that. The bodywork of the cab is strengthened severely to account for the decreased structural rigidity campared to the body of the coupe. It wouldn't surprise me at all that this difference in mass and shape of large parts of the car account for a difference in exhaust note.

This is right, there is no difference. However, due to the fact that the fixed roof is missing and related circumstances, the engine/exhaust sound is more noticeable in the Cab compared to the Coupe, even with the soft top up.

The 997 facelift has a very nice exhaust note, I was actually afraid that due to emissions laws and the new DI engines, the exhaust/engine sound would be castrated. Of course Porsche did a lot of sound engineering and the sound isn't really "original" but "tuned" to Porsche's liking but I like it and it sounds better than the OEM exhaust of the pre-facelift.

    nice one!

    Mk2 997 at PDE 8 July 08

Guys, I have written a full report (with photos) on my subjective impressions of the Mk2 997 at the PDE on 8 July 2008 on this thread:

Real life job, making money to be able to feed the family and run this forum...bla bla bla.
To make it short: I'M SORRY. The pictures are ready, I even made a comparison to the new BMW M3 Cab with DKG but I need the time to gather my thoughts and to write everything down in English(which is another problem since this isn't my mother language). I hope to get everything up and running this weekend but I won't promise again, I don't want you guys to think I'm just blowing hot air. Sorry again, this weekend...hopefully.

Re: Rennteam drove the 997 Carrera S Facelift

Thank you for your efforts, I look forward to it!

Re: Rennteam drove the 997 Carrera S Facelift

Thanks for the effort. Looking forward to it since you are usually spot on...

Re: Rennteam drove the 997 Carrera S Facelift

Take your time RC. Most of us on this forum understand about too little hours in the day. I was just worried that I missed your report somehow as I do not visit everday. I'm very curious about the PDK as my Cayman S is going in August to be replaced by an order for a 997S. So far I am deeply disapointed about what I read about PDK and will probably go manual. I was expecting F1 style shifting and enjoyment which doesn't seem to be the case.
