Power of the FL 997 Turbo

    FL 997 Turbo : 500 PS

FL 997 Turbo S : 530 PS, only available with PDK

Re: Power of the FL 997 Turbo

    Turbo S = WOW!

Re: Power of the FL 997 Turbo

PCCBs standard and a $140k USD base?

Re: Power of the FL 997 Turbo

What's funny? Maybe I'm fooling myself but I can't imagine having more than 500 hp for a Porsche street car.

I mean if I wanted to pass on a two lane highway to my current car's maximum potential I would scare the sh*t outta the oncoming driver. They would think they were about to be killed because nothing they know moves so fast.

IOW, of there's no oncoming traffic, the car has plenty of power to pass anywhere it's legal. If there were oncoming traffic you have to hold back with what the car can do unless you want to cause an accident with the oncoming guy swerving off the road.

So please explain (anybody) what the extra fifty hp would be used for on public roads other than getting yourself in trouble.

Geez!!! I can't believe I just wrote this post!

I kind of hear what you're saying, but then again, not so much. MMD, wasn't it you that touted so adamantly how great it is to have all that power in your current tt?. With your arguement, then your car could be considered too much. I don't think that another 50 HP with the tt's AWD will make the car any less usable on the street. All speed ahead, I say! No harm intended, of course.

I agree more with your last sentence.

Re: Power of the FL 997 Turbo

When will the Turbo S be built?????

I think I was high on HP at the time thinking, for road cars, all Porsches are underpowered except the TT.

It's like roads and highways aren't built for 500+ hp cars.

I mean I'm boarder line "responsible" driver on the interstate passing lanes right now (BTW, I'm very tame in neighborhoods and city). Gimme more HP and I might go over the line. SURE it would be _FUN_ but can we be trusted?

IOW, if there were a 1000hp car? Would the line be drawn there?

Re: Power of the FL 997 Turbo

FL 997 Turbo S : 530 PS, only available with PDK

    only available with PDK?
i find that to be highly disappointing. at least give me the choice between pdk and manual.

Re: Power of the FL 997 Turbo

I am less interested in the BHP and more interested in the torque figures.

I am curious if Porsche are going to limit the car to the current 620/680Nm (normal/sport) that the Turbo, and GT2 have now so that the PDK can cope?!

Re: Power of the FL 997 Turbo

    When?

I think as long as you can get the power to the tarmac, bring it on I say. If you're looking at 800hp and half the time you spend wheel spinning then I'd agree with you.

Re: Power of the FL 997 Turbo

MMD, you are always looking at your car in terms of it's practicality. You probably don't need more than 300bhp for overtaking on public roads, so I sometimes am baffled as to why you drive a TT at all.

I don't like driving a supercar for it's greater practical abilities, I like it because when I get on some EMPTY back roads, I can put a big smile on my face.

500 or 1000bhp is irrelevant, as long as it's controlled within the car's and driver's abilities. I would say 600bhp and AWD on a straight dry open road is my personal limit where I would start feeling out of control (probably 450 in a RWD 911 with the weight all out the back).

You do know that you don't HAVE to use all that power, the gas pedal isn't an on-off switch.

Re: Power of the FL 997 Turbo

You can get 20-50 HP easily out of some fairly minimal mods with the current 997TT. I am more interested in the new engine design. Are they keeping the GT1 crankcase or are they going to "improve" (cough) the engine by using the Cayenne crankcase? 500 HP from the factory is certainly nice, but if the engine changes I wonder if there will be much room for tuning.

Re: Power of the FL 997 Turbo

Wow, I think the Turbo S with PDK will match the GT2's 0-200 km/h time. Same power, lower Cw, faster shifting... :P

With all due respect Alex, I don't see it that way.

My 997S wasn't quick enough. I would find myself "waiting" for it to _accelerate_, it seemed to merely gather speed. Not a good feeling when passing a Subaru in minimal passing lanes on curve-y roads.

The TT is like a rocket, somehow the 100+ hp and extra Tq (and SC boost!) makes a biiiig difference; like breaking a barrier of some sort. They say "point and shoot" about the TT not about the NA cars.

    FWIW,

Just a thought. If speeds were in the 120mph range and not the 55-80mph range here in the USA, THEN I'm thinking 1000HP would start making sense. Now? 500 in a Porsche is about all that can be justified..., in my hobbyist opinion of course.

    Great news....!

Re: Power of the FL 997 Turbo

500 PS is yesterdays' 300 PS. Nothing less than 600 PS is going to be upper crust performance in this day.

Re: Power of the FL 997 Turbo

MMD, something tells me that in 5 years, when it's time to trade in your 480 BHP 997TT for the 998TT with 566 BHP, you will be more than happy.

LOLOL! Yeah..., crazy how our brains work. I saw on Discovery Channel show somewhere that most decisions we make are irrational. IOW, we think we're being reasonable but closer look and it's a joke!

Uh oh..., _5_years? will we still be living these nice lifestyles?

My guess is that it will be at dealers next summer . Year 2009, model 2010

Re: Power of the FL 997 Turbo

In about 10 years time, I doubt perfomance in sportscars will improve. At least in the 0-100kph department !

Re: Power of the FL 997 Turbo

Good point Alex. In ten years time most of us will be getting 0-60mph in 2.2 seconds: with electric motors! LOL. Digital sound systems will provide a selection of "classic" engine sounds. Bring it on!

Re: Power of the FL 997 Turbo

Looking a the 0-60 performance of the cars I owned in the past few years, none super exotic all cheaper than the 997TT:

    2000 5 seconds
    2003 4.3 seconds
    2007 3.3 seconds

I suspect in 2018 we'll easily break the 2 seconds mark, with AWD, etc.

Re: Power of the FL 997 Turbo

Depends on the power of the batteries these days ..

Re: Power of the FL 997 Turbo

If you ever drive in Oregon and some of the other western states where they allow "triples" (tractor trailer pulling two more trailers) a 1000 HP is barely enough, especially when you have to pass two or three of those rigs in a row.

But everyone will be poor, just like it is intended in a communist run government
