    PSE Option on 997.2

Anyone ordering the 997 FL with PSE? On one of the reviews, they said PSE was a must. Apparently PSE has no powergain although it is fully integrated into the launch control system (some said it had some power gains just that PAG didn't state it). Any input?

    Re: PSE Option on 997.2

it must have a power gain... The engine works out in a more free way a bit like racing manifolds.. In any case if you think that ruf exhausts give about 15 hp more you must have a gain.

Not to mention the fun and joy of a pure flat 6 roar....

DO NOT ORDER A CAR WITHOUT IT.

PSE is a must to me. It sounds incredible and looked great on the 997.1. I also believe that it must add a few ponies but PAG didn't want to go through the additional cert.

It only makes sense because it's not like today's prformance mufflers are rocket science. Yes, there is a balance beteen proper back pressure for better torque in the low revs (PSE has this), but traditionally with more air flow comes more power. If a Tubi or AWE gains 5-6 on a NA 997, then certainly PSE must gain at least 3-4, if not on par.

The gain on the Boxster RS60 is 8HP. So my guess for 997 is in the region of 10-12HP.

    Re: PSE Option on 997.2

the PSE never had power gains before... at least not on the 996 and 997... the only way to gain factory power gains is by getting the X51 power kit, which includes the PSE, among other more radical modifications...

None claimed anyway. For all we know PAG won't claim it because it also eats into the 25 HP of X51. We all know too well how they operate.

    Re: PSE Option on 997.2

I suspect the statistical range of gains allied to the variability of outputs from standard engines meant Porsche couldn't really claim an increase from PSE and support it. Possibly the RS60 engines have been handpicked to ensure that with PSE they give 8+ hp.

    Re: PSE Option on 997.2

Regardless of the gain, going aftermarket usually adds around anywhere from 5-15 hp depending on manufacturers. Supersprints... Europipe... any aftermarket input v. PSE which gives no gain?

    Re: PSE Option on 997.2

PSE sounds great but I am skeptical of any power gain. For that matter, keeping the valves shut on a 997 GT3 is said by Porsche techs not to translate into any measurable loss of torque or power. All for noise.
I think that the character gain brought by PSE is a lot more valuable than a few hypothetical horses. I guess that temperature, fuel quality, atmospheric pressure incur fluctuations that exceed the 2% or so claimed here.

    Re: PSE Option on 997.2

Ignoring impact on residuals, it seems going aftermarket may be better than PSE? What type of results are those with PSE getting on a rolling road?

I am not so sure that all of the aftermarket exhausts yield the same low and mid-range torque as PSE. I would also be surprised to see more than 1-2% gain with any of them. As far as residuals, PSE may have some return if the buyer wants it. From my experience, aftermarket exhausts can sometimes hurt resale. However, it is hard to ignore a reduction in weight and a modest increase in power (aftermarket) vs. the same weight (PSE may even weigh a couple of pounds more because of the vavles) and no "claimed" power gains. Granted some of the aftermarket stuff does sometimes cost a bit more than PSE.

How do they relate the 8HP gain on the RS60 to the exhaust then? I don't think it is anything more special than a normal PSE.
Maybe on the rest of the range, they don't want to get into type approval procedures for a few HP and this is the reason they don't quote any gains on the exhaust option.

I have the PSE on order for my July build car... Unfortunately, PSE is only available from Nov-08...so it will be retrofitted.

No doubt for me the PSE is a must.

    Re: PSE Option on 997.2

Has anyone had any experience on putting aftermarket system such as Miltek, Supersprint...etc. on FL cars? I suspect that it will take a little longer for the manufacturers to come up with a system that caters also to the new FL's DFI's tweak. Regarding the exhaust sound, can someone shed some lights on aftermarket V. PSE? RC did mention that the new car's engine sounds a lot better but a few said it was more muted. I guess I will wait till I take delivery and then see what it sounds like before I retrofit or put on any other system.
