    2008 Top Gear Ep 1: Supercar Fuel Economy Test

    "In this first part the team is concerned about rising gas prices. In typical Top Gear style, they fill up five supercars (Ferrari 599, Lamborghini Murcielago, Aston DBS, Audi R8 and Mercedes SLR) with 1 gallon of fuel and race them around a track to see which one will go the furthest."

    The Ferrari 599 manages 1,7 miles on one gallon


    "Next up, they drive a Toyota Prius Hybrid on the race track as fast as possible with a new BMW M3 Sedan following behind at the same pace. Ten laps later, guess what? The Prius did 17.2 UK MPG (14.3 US MPG) while the M3 Sedan 19.4 UK MPG (16.2 US MPG)!"

    BMW has the best engines out there.
    VERY efficient compared to the rest.

    Ferrari figures are just LOL. awesome...
    The new California supposedly does 13,2L/100km where 430 does 18,2L/100 (combined figurres a suppose)

    I was expecting the R8 to last the longest since it has the smallest engine but not the LP640 to go so far with a V12 and AWD.

    omg thanks for posting.. i watched the whole episode.

    Must say i love topgear cause they once again proved how ghay the prius is. An M3 is better on gas.. i hope this makes news so all those who have brought a prius will finally realize they are complete idiots. What a green movement scam that is!

    Omg the ferrari only getting 1.7 MPG...

    Except that the Prius was driven as fast as possible for the purpose of the test, something that the buyers don't do on a daily basis (not to say never).

    I agree the Prius is rubbish though.

    Haha, entertaining but hardly fair. Who takes a Prius to a racetrack to measure it's fuel efficiency? The Prius was being floored the whole time while the BMW was barely revving. Take it to a highway, put it on cruise control and see how it does. That's what it was made for.

    BTW, I find Prius' ugly and will never own one. Also, their owners are too smug

    That would make them, what:
    166L/100km for 599
    69L/100km for LP640
    56L/100km for R8
    for a spirited drive.

    The difference for Ferrari is astonishing.

    The point JC was making, and he is spot on right, is "it's not what you drive but how you drive it".

    I agree totally about self righteous Prius drivers, though

    I recently got a Lexus SUV hybdrid as a rental car for a day... and drove it on the Autobahn. The Mileage I got was wors e than that of a Cayenne GTS I drove while my Boxster was in the shop a few weeks ago....

    I'm no prius fan but it was not really designed for continual highway cruising. The hybrid technology shines best in stop and go traffic where the engine can shut on and off to save fuel.

    Do you really think they let the tanks run dry? that is HORRIBLE for the cars' engines.

    For modern gas engines, it's actually does no harm to run the tank and line dry.

    For modern diesels, it's also ok except one needs to prime the feed lines again.

    For youtube videos, even if one is removed, you can find the same thing under a different heading.

    As for the Prius, it is just horrible and a rip-off, I had one for a week back when I was testing cars as a journalist. It basically doesn't do what it says on the label.

    Evo has made the same point in the past few issues. The new small diesel cars have much better economy, are nicer to drive and have less global ecological impact in terms of how they are produced.

    Europeans KNOWS diesels are better but the Americans still thinks diesels are smelly and dirty and useless and that's why Toyota exploited them with the Prius.

    Top Gear - Prius Vs M3 - astonishing, to say the least that a M3 at partial load is more efficient than a Prius at full load (with almost a third of its displacement only)....

    I have a 3-litre Audi diesel with around 250 hp. It will easily cruise at 130 mph and it'll still get 28 mpg, with AWD to boot. For fuel economy, you can't beat a diesel, although the S5 gave me second thoughts .
