Well, the feeling that I get is that the 996 C4 was not selling too wel. Back then, they solved it by introducing the C4s, which was (I think) a very popular car, with it's turbo look and widebody (and the reflector stripe). With the 997, they already had the Standard carrera and the S, so they tried to make the C4 and C4s more attractive by giving it the widebody, instead of giving the C2 and C4 narrowbody and C2S and C4S the widebody. I can imagine that the 4WD models are still not selling well, and that porsche is trying to make it look more like a step up, positioned between the C2 models and the turbo.

Yes the 996 C4S was quite popular but as the late Paul Frère said it was "all looks and no go." The C4S was heavier than the C4 - the C4 was a better car.

"Porsche remains Porsche and Carrera remains Carrera. The terms must be not only for a long time explained and stood both for sports cars with rear propulsion. That will remain also further in such a way. The revision 911 goes with the Carrera 4 and the stronger version of the 4S into the next round. Also the all wheel models were purely outwardly moderately modified. Easily increased air intakes and the standard Bi-xenon-headlights as well as LED technology for day driving and the clearance light fall in the eye. As extra a dynamic curve light with xenon technology is offered for the first time (702 euros). At the tail, which fails more broadly with the Allradler by 44 millimeters, as with the two wheel drive models, now 60 LED (light emitting diodes) lights up. The pointedly approaching lights are to give additional perceptible width to the tail. An important distinguishing feature of the Carrera 4 is a new reflector screen between the tail lamps, which is so again actually not. Already with internally the G-model Elfer specified of the class 1974 gave it a continuous red volume.
A further new fact of the refined Elfers are two fundamentally newly developed double-piston engines with gasoline direct injection. The achievement of the 3,6-Liter-Sechszylinders rose from 325 to 345 HP. The force cure brought additional 30 HP to the larger 3,8-Liter-Boxer (Carrera 4S) ? is 385 HP now in the tail. With all that the new models up to 12,9 per cent are to use less than so far. The Carrera 4 Coupé therefore gets along with 10,1 litres of super plus on 100 kilometers.
In the new Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S, which is offered as had as Coupé and Cabrio, replaces the electronically steered, in modified form of 911 turbo taken over Porsche Traction management (PTM) the past all-wheel drive with Visco multiple disk clutch. The PTM can lead the portion of the engine moment to the front wheels, accurately necessary depending upon driving conditions, within 100 milliseconds. A standard mechanical rear axle transverse barrier is the driving stability, which traction and the handling improve additionally."

that's what I thought too when I saw the pics, it would've look better if the stripe was thicker

I guess it is meant to be more like a statement (look, I've bought the more expensive FWD
) than anyhing else (the marginally wider hips don't get that much attention from non-Porschephiles..)The designer must like dogs
