    Option 541 - Seat Ventilation...

Does anyone have experience with this in other vehicles? How does that system perform? is there any chance that seats may become infested w/ fungus/mold? If yes, it would be a pain to deal with.

Re: Option 541 - Seat Ventilation...

Not sure, but I definitely plan on getting them.

    not for me

    I vent my own

A good vindaloo will do a great job, weighs a lot less (actually will aid with lightening the car's load) and costs hundreds of $'s less than 541. Porsche poppadoms anyone?

    Re: I vent my own

I have the cooling seats on the Mercedes E550. It does help when it is hot. Not a gimmick.

    No problems? no fungus/bad odor?

    Re: I vent my own

No, just a cooling sensation that helps cool off when the car is very hot. I wouldn't think of ordering the option (came as part of a package), but I'm glad I have it. If it is not expensive and you live in an area with hot temperatures, it may be worth it.

Basically, Le Chef develops gas after he eats Indian food.

Re: Option 541 - Seat Ventilation...

I don't understand why seat ventilation is only available with heated seats. Heated seats are for cold countries and vented seats are for hot countries. So, why would one need both?

    Shared wiring?

Very useful in temperate-climate countries. It sometimes gets really cold here in the winter and it can get seriously hot during the summer, so having both does actually make sense.

Re: Option 541 - Seat Ventilation...

Here in Germany, the summers are warm enough to make the cars hot and the winters are cold. So you need both, thats how those Porsche engineers are thinking.

I would take it as my shirts are always wet after longer trips!

Re: Option 541 - Seat Ventilation...

Whats the price of this option?

    It's all about moisture:

    Quote:
New vented seats for a really pleasant climate

In conjunction with seat heating, the new models in the 911 range are available as an option
for the first time with seat ventilation on both the standard and comfort seats. Creating a
healthy and comfortable micro-climate between the driver/passenger and the surface of the
seat is indeed particularly important, since this is precisely the point where the occupant is
constantly in contact with the car. Active seat ventilation offers a pleasantly comfortable and
warm, dry climate on the seat surface also in the hot season.

To switch on the seat ventilation, all the occupant has to do is press a button in the centre
console. Touching the button just once, he will first activate the highest of the three comfort
stages, three blue light-emitting diodes presenting the ventilation stage currently in use. This
stage remains active until the driver or front passenger switch to another level of ventilation.
The only exception is when the surface temperature on the seat drops to less than 15* C
or 59* F, with the system switching off automatically in order to avoid undercooling.

The seat bottom is vented specifically at those points where the occupant is in direct con -
tact with the seat, which are shown by the characteristic perforation on the seat cover. Air
is supplied by one fan in the seat bottom and another in the backrest, taking up any per -
spiration moisture between the occupant and the seat surface through the perforated seat
bottom and the backrest centre section. Air flows in through a special air guidance tissue
and is conveyed by a hose beneath and, respectively, behind the seat. This serves to quickly
cool down the seat surfaces heated up by the sun and prevent the occupants from sweating
    while driving.

Even when operating at their highest level, the two fans are so quiet that they remain hardly
    noticeable.

Seat ventilation may be combined with temperature control on the seat heating serving to
consistently withdraw moisture and at the same time keeping the seat surface at a pleasant
    temperature.

Re: Option 541 - Seat Ventilation...

From my reading of the OG, it looks like even though the "sport seats" can be heated, ventilation cannot. Is this how everyone else reads this as well?

Re: Option 541 - Seat Ventilation...

This option is a must in Texas. We've been subjected to August temps in June! It feels as if it's been 100 degrees for the past month....Oh wait....

Re: Option 541 - Seat Ventilation...

Mercedes has had them for about 7-8 years. I've had them on 3 SL's, one S and one CL. They are pretty nice to have when it's hot out, particuarly on the cabrios. Better option than I thought they would be. However, I am not getting on my 09' 997S cab.

Ventilation can only be had on the standard and comfort seats:

Re: Option 541 - Seat Ventilation...

Wish I had this in my '07 cab, that's for sure.

Re: Option 541 - Seat Ventilation...

Thanks temm for the feature description and picture. It's clear how it works - no AC plumbing involved, and as such fungus/mold should not be a problem. It adds 4 fans (2 per seat) adding weight and complexity. I vote against it - favoring simplicity and less weight.

Re: Option 541 - Seat Ventilation...

    ..open the window...

    Leather = common these days

You can get leather on just about any car these days that costs above $15K new. You would think that companies like Porsche would start to look at more interesting materials for seats and interiors. Maybe they should team up with Adidas or Puma or Marc Newson, to find materials that are light, durable, and wick so you don't need another 10kg's of fans attached to the seats.

Back in the 20's and 30's cars had woven cloth as seat materials as this was more luxurious than leather. It's a pity car manufacturers have to be so conservative and boring.

Let's hope Chris Bangle continues to break the mold on conservative design for BMW. Time to attack the interiors Chris!

I think that is correct - no ventilation with the sports seats. I think this is because the sports seats have several more electronically adustable surfaces, and thus they have pumps and motors in there that the regular seats do not... and thus have no room for the two fans that the ventilation system requires.

Since sport seats are out for me, as my wide shoulders are cramped inside those seats, I'll be enjoying warm sunny days with the Targa top open, and no shirt sticking to the seat after many hours of driving...

Re: Option 541 - Seat Ventilation...

Have had ventilated seats on both BMW and Mercedes for years. Would get them again, useful for trips over 30 minutes. Too bad its not something available on flights.

Re: Option 541 - Seat Ventilation...

Hell, I'd settle for a comfortable chair on flights... with the new 997, I'll definitely never fly again.
