TTR was there today as well...

Re: Audi R8 V10 at the Ring VIDEO

Everyone is using the V10 engines these days when just a few years ago V12s an V8s were king. And of course straight 6 and V6.Cars I think are using V10 include Dodge Viper(and other sports cars with Viper V10s), Carrera GT,Lexus LFA,Audi RS cars, new Acura NSX, and of course the Audi R8. And of course most of the LMP1 prototypes.

Re: Audi R8 V10 at the Ring VIDEO

I think you are forgetting the Gallardo/LP560-4.

Re: Audi R8 V10 at the Ring VIDEO

    Now THAT, sounds better.

Re: Audi R8 V10 at the Ring VIDEO

Just how many horsepower is the R8 V10 ?

Re: Audi R8 V10 at the Ring VIDEO

This car FINALLY sounds the way it looks. Something about a deep bellowy, V8 muscle car soundtrack just didn't match the design futuristic styling. It irked me.

A lot of that has to do with using pre-existing designs:

    - Viper's engine was basically a truck/tractor mill that was sourced from the pick-up truck division.

    - Lexus's engine was a spinoff of Toyota's F1 engine development when they were still using V10's.

    - Carrera GT, everyone knows was a cancelled race car project they decided to make "streetable." And I put streetable in quotes because of all the modern supercars, this one requires the most driver skill to control as evidence by the numerous spinouts, crashes, and deaths.

Honda/Acura though surprises me because they have so much experience with high performance V8 engines given their supplier relationship with IRL and American Le Mans

Re: Audi R8 V10 at the Ring VIDEO

I heard something once about V10's running more smoothly than other configurations because of the way the crank is balanced. I'm sure it differs from marque to marque, and I'm not sure I can explain why, but I definitely heard that somewhere...

Re: Audi R8 V10 at the Ring VIDEO

So are you saying that the Toyota F1 engine back in the early 2000s is going to be detuned and marketed in the Lexus LFA. They don't really look that similar.

This images of the Lexus V10 has to be 72 degrees instead of the 90 most say on all the car forums.

    You're kind of correct.

It has to do with natural harmonic balance characteristics across RPMs.

It's really deep engineery stuff, so I can't explain but I do know this ... in terms of "smoothest" natural running engine configs to roughest, the map looks like such:

    Boxer Engines > V12 > Inline 6 > V6 > V10 > V8 > Flat Plane Crankshaft V8s (Ferrari) > 4 Cyclinder > 2 Cyclinder > 1 Cyclinder

Re: Audi R8 V10 at the Ring VIDEO

Good website better explaining what I mentioned above:

Re: Audi R8 V10 at the Ring VIDEO

^^^Are you sure that's the Audi engine?????

The car in the background is the Lexus LF-A and that engine display looks like it's connected to the booth.

Re: Audi R8 V10 at the Ring VIDEO

Sorry the picture is associated with a question about the relation between the LFAs engine and the Toyota F1 V10.

    Not quite correct.
Many of the current LMP1 are V12's
    Peugeot 908 = V12 Diesel
    Audi R10 = V12 Diesel (The R8 was a V8)
    Lola Aston Martin = V12

The Judd engined cars (Euskadi Epsilone, Dome and Pescarolo's) are V10's.

That's an interesting cam shaft head design. Do we have more informaiton as to what is special about LF-A V10? Max RPM, etc.?

No, of course it wouldn't be a direct F1 drop in.

Back when the F1's were running V10 it was 90 or even 110 degree blocks which were neccesatated by the width and heights of the car. Remember in F1, the engine is a stressed member which the suspension is mounted off of.

But I'm sure there's F1 knowledge share and F1 ideaized parts inside the LF-A engine. I mean that's what F1 is for ... a development testbed.
