    According to a Porsche display, the German automaker timed three different 911s for comparison. The fastest was a 2009 911 Carrera S outfitted with Porsche's new twin-clutch automated manual Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission, PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) Sport, and "sports tires," turning a 7:50 lap time.

    Next was a 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S (presumably with manual transmission) turning a 7:58. Four seconds slower was a current 911 Carrera S (presumably equipped comparably to the 2009 manual car), turning an 8:02.

    Porsche says the PDK shifts 60 percent faster than the former Tiptronic S automatic, and offers a small improvement in fuel economy over the six-speed manual-equipped 911.

    Imagine how much faster it would have been if Porsche fitted "real paddles" and adopted the pull= + push= - principle as the "real sequentials"!

    How would that make it any faster? OK, you are joking, I get it.

    All Porsches have "sports tires", so when they point out that the PDK car had "sports tires", we have to understand that it had Cups. Or Corsas.

    That's not a very fair way to cut the lap time, because I doubt that the regular car can be ordered with Cups from the factory.

    I was joking of course because I find this "paddle" debate very farcical and unfair to the engineers that created this technical tour de force.
    I respect somebody's preference for anything in life but to give so big a dimension to this issue and to try to justify somebody's preference by giving pseudo-biomechanic arguments is absurd in my opinion. I've read/seen all english language reviews of the PDK, they all state that it functions perfectly and that it is a superb piece of engineering but because journalists have to find something wrong with everything to justify their wages they mention the "paddle and push/pull issue" as if this is from the holy book and it cannot be done otherwise.

    Regarding the Cup/Corsa tyres, these were not allowed by Porsche on 997.1 except for the dry-sump cars (GTs and Turbo)due to fear of oil starvation because of the high g-forces.
    Maybe the new engine with its advanced lubrication has overcome this problem and Cup/Corsa tyres can be fitted. If this is the case timing the cars with sport tyres is valid IMO.

    I believe that the PDK thumb buttons are probably closer to what is found in F1 cars (and RS Spyder) than any paddles that are out there. Am I wrong? Don't those cars have a button on the center of the steering wheel that the driver pushes with his thumbs?

    NO matter how great the underlying technology is, it is useless if the end user's ergonomics are not good.

    I for one, would have appreciated paddles and front/back +/-
