    Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

All 996s develop over time internal rattles and panel creaking noises. Most cars rattle when they drive over rough railroad tracks, but others, including 996s, as they age tend do rattle over anything other than smooth surfaces.

Now... the 997 has a stiffer chassis and most came with PASM. My question, for 997 owners who have accumulated at least 20,000 miles, how quiet are your cars?

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

I've got a 2006 C4S Cabriolet w/ 10000 mi and have got a noise from the rear that under acceleration at times sounds like a creaky spring. The dealer told me once that it was coming from the rear suspension and another time from the the top?

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

No rattles. No creaks. Just the sweetest engine sound and exhaust note known to man.

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

2006 997s. I have constant creaking from the rear right pillar. I had it ever since I drove over very rough cobbles on a divert close to where I live. I've thought of taking it in but experience has shown that you could end up with more creaks, let alone a scuffed interior from a clumsy engineer.

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

2005 CS2, no creaks or rattles. The PSE sounds good though

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

2005 C2. Lots of creaks and rattles, but all is forgotten with a little push on the accel

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

Interesting... some say silent, some say rattles. Rattles are not acceptable.

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

Most of these noises are temperature and road surface related. So they vary according to where you live and drive.

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

Why aftyer 20,000 miles? I have about 1,300 miles on my '08 C4S and sometimes hear a noise from the right rear, that is not tire noise, on some types of road surfaces. Not a creak or a rattle though.

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

Close to 20,000 km with lots of hard track time: no rattles or squeaks at all. Perfect.

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

Same as Silver Bullet here (but just about 5 track days) - nothing, nada, nichts.

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

No rattle after 35'000 km withe some track days on my 2007 Targa 4S.
    Carlos

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

With 55'000 km I have some rattles. One is comming from the back and another one from a speaker ( only sometimes when lots of bass)

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

7000 km 997 C4S -07. Have two small rattling sounds that show at certain speeds and road conditions. One from top-right of dashboard it seems. Another one seems to come from the right door. Somewhere low. Middle of door. Porsche has looked at the latter, checked everything and inserted some damping material - but its still there.

I'll check-in again after summer. With a detailed list of road conditions and speeds for when the rattles occur.

I hate rattles, but I understand its very hard to get rid of completely. So I have some degree of acceptancefor minor rattling sounds at certain speeds.

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

Mine has rattled ever since the tracker was fitted.

I have tracked my car once (2nd and 3rd gear track only) and the sound I hear, I would describe as the sound of a board banging on a hard surface. Can't figure out exactly where it is coming from though other than the rear of the car. Anyone have any thoughts on what could be causing it? #$

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

9k on a 2006 carrera coupe, intermittent rattle from drivers side dash( near speaker,Bose) Can't spot it. Came shortly after SRX install, however, resecured all related wiring etc. with no success. Possible mirror wiring? Any ideas? Please help, car is otherwise perfect.

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

Rattle free on my 07 C2S and my 05 Boxster is the same and to be honest my only rattle on my 02 996 was in the dash and fixed by the dealership...On the other hand, every single vette I have ever driven has rattled like crazy( have not been in a 07 or 08 but been in other 08 GM products and was not imopressed with fit and finish )

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

The number one cause of rattles is incorrect reassembly and/or damage to clips when interior bits are removed for adding aftermarket "upgrades" like stereos etc. or by paintless dent removal folks etc. Even dealer mechanics can be a problem if they are not very thorough.

My Carrera had an aftermarket stereo when I bought it and the car made a few noises that bugged the crap out of me. Went through everything between the stereo and the speakers and eventually everything was cleared up and the car is now tight as a drum. I was surprised, as I originally thought some of the noises came from different places.

My theory is build date as well; does anyone have any statistics that show number of defects per car during each build month? I wonder as the summer approaches (and zee Germans take their holidays) does the number of defects increase as well

That's correct. In some new cars the clip problem may be there from new, given that some clips may not be attached correctly when the car was assembled... Typically they are half-attached and when you drive the car off the dealer's lot all is well, but soon thereafter the clips loosen themselves and the panels rattle.

Most 911s though are rattle-free when new, but I have seen them getting rattles. Most are clips loosening up... the problem is that one needs to remove a lot of panels to fix those. and dealers do not help every time, and some times make it worse, or cause cosmetic damage.

Very true. It is often hard to pinpoint noise sources in a resonant chamber such as a car cabin.

Thanks for all the feedback. The impression I get is that there's been an improvement from the 996 to the 997 rattle-wise as it seems the 997 is stiffer.

Now... even a car that may be labelled rattle-free still rattles when subject to a sharp impulse like a large expansion joint. This is due to the various plastic panels vibrating against each other. This could (and should) be eliminated if the panel-touching-edges were coated with a felt liner. MB does this in their cars and it works well.

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

    2005 C2S 25K....still perfect!

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

2005 C2S 27000 miles. Central dashboard rattle when new - resolved by OPC, perfect since then.

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

My GT3 has been creaking in the 3/4 rear right panel since new, and dealer intervention has not made things better (not worse either, that's a start). They told me it was a clip, but that has not changed anything to the bottom line. Unacceptable, even if it's waaaay better than my 02 996C2 and 04 996TT.

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

I think it is much to ask that a GT3 be rattle/creak/squeak free, especially if it is tracked (which it ought to be).

It's not an S class Merc.

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

I would agree, except that it rattled from day 1, before it ever got tracked or that the firmer ride - if some would blame it on that - could play any role. So yes, I'd expect S Class fit and finish from Porsche driving off the lot.

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

Rattles in 996 C2, Dash and door rattles in 2005 C2S, minor door rattle in 2007 C2S but other wise much better than the 2005. Engine's better too and no spring creak from rear either.

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

I have a 997TT with 12k on it and it has had loads of rattles as do all 5 of the last Porsches I have had in the last 3-4 years. Make them better Porsche!

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

Also all but one were bought new

Re: Polling on 997's rattle/creaking noises...

You've been very unlucky...why haven't you had your dealer fix the rattles?
