    New Cayenne

Despite earlier reports, the prototype snapped in these pictures are not a smaller brother to the current Porsche Cayenne - which has been referred to as the Roxster - but is actually the first sight of the icon itself: the new 2011 Porsche Cayenne.

Porsche was first to the market with an SUV model based on the vehicle architecture developed jointly between Volkswagen, Audi and itself, with the original Cayenne being released back in 2002 - one year ahead of the VW Touareg and four years ahead of the Audi Q7.

Porsche has apparently succeeded to pushing VW to speed up development of shared projects - such as the replacement design for the SUV family.

Executives at Porsche hope to launch the new Cayenne by the first half of 2010, however, the second-gen Touareg isn't due to make an appearance until late 2010 at the earliest. Germany's Automobilwoche reports that Porsche boss Wendelin Wiedeking is using his ever-increasing control of VW Group to rush projects that would favor Porsche, even if it disadvantages VW. Audi, meanwhile, isn't expected to replace its Q7 SUV with a new model until 2013.

Wiedeking made it clear to the VW board in January 2006 that he hopes to speed up development of the Cayenne because of fears of the worsening demand for thirsty SUVs and rising oil prices. The new model will be much more fuel-efficient and will feature a new hybrid model, as well as a diesel, in its revamped lineup.

    Re: New Cayenne

Nice find Enzo as always, thanks .

    Re: New Cayenne

So the Cayenne.2 will be down-sized in terms of external dimensions? The car in the pictures looks smaller.

    Re: New Cayenne

Cayenne 2 is going to be based upon the existing floorpan so I doubt it will be smaller. This car has pronounced curves to the front and rear wings which is a clever designer's trick to reduce the impression of size/volume.

    Re: New Cayenne

From the camo it seems it would keep the overall lines of the Cayenne 1st generation which is disappointing.

Porsche is all about evolution, don't forget. They want a "legend" (I am using this terms very loosely) for the next 20-30 years. No radical departures only refining the theme.

    Re: New Cayenne

too little camouflage on this car to come out in three yrs time from now.... this has to come much sooner. remember the Panamera that at the beginning had so much camo that was impossible to say where the door cuts where...this one apart from the bumpers, rear lights and bonnet everything is on sight. so I think it will be sooner on the market.

I totally agree with you about Porsche's design philosophy, nevertheless one big difference here with for e.g. the 911 or Boxster design is that the general consensus is the Cayenne is not a good-looking car.

Besides my humble opinion is that Porsche was conservative when styling the Cayenne because they were the newcomer with everything to prove, now they are established and I would have thought they would go for a bolder design.

BTW, normally I do not judge cars with camo but in this case it does not seem heavy, thus allowing to have a glimpse of the overall shape.

The car is actually heavily covered up. The entire rear of the current generation have been glued on to the car to deceive us that the car will look like the current one. The same goes from the front end, the head lights are real but the entire front fenders, bonnet and bumper is all camo.

So don't be fooled, there's more than what meets the eyes. The key areas of the car like the front end design and rear end is entirely covered up. Most of the heavy parts should be stripped off next year.

    Early 2009: Panamera

    Early 2010: Cayenne mk2

Dimensions will be slightly smaller and similar to the Infinity FX and similar urban SUV. The overall experience should be similar to the Cayenne GTS, more road focused. That will essentially make new generation Cayenne Panamera estate/avant/touring.

    Re: New Cayenne

I think you are right about the camo. There seems to be a lot of heavy plastic covering the entire front (pretty obvious) and most of the rear. For example, from some angles the rear tail lights stick out from the lines of the truck...way too bulbous, so hopefully it is just some plastic camo covering. The cayenne has never been a good looking vehicle...I could not imagine they would want to make it even uglier.

    Re: New Cayenne

i think this time they will get it right

    Re: New Cayenne

it'll look a lot like this one then eh?

n terms of size, ground clearence and purpose it should be highly similar.

    Re: New Cayenne

It's probably mentioned before but I sincirely hope Porsche does a better job than BMW with the X3 (awfull car to drive let alone to look at --> people saying the Mk1 cayenne is not an oil painting, not sure what to say about the X3)
