    best rims/tires for track on RS?

    anyone know the best stuff for track use?
    some people swear by the Toyo R888 some by Nitto nt01...
    Any ideas? I think the Toyos can fit over stock rims..?
    If not I think 18 inch rims are cheaper and lighter and some friends say they are great for track... any opinions?

    There is a feeling that you should stick with the OEM wheels as they aid air flow into the brakes - I don't know if this is true or not. I stay on 19" for the track.

    On tyres - the toyo are good I know people who swear by them - however if I were in CA on dry tracks I'd get some real slicks - I've been driven around a track on slicks by a pro and OMG - grip like you would not believe!

    If you have PCCB, I don't believe there are too many 18" rims that fit over the calipers.

    You'd want 18s simply because they offer better (proper width) and cheaper tire options (also you can get anything, hoosier, nt01, pilot sport cup, r888 in the sizes you want). The 3.5 inch wheel gap front and rear and 6 centimeter tire gap is too much. You'd benefit from more front tire. If you keep the stock front fenders I'd get 255/35-18 toyo r888s for the front and 315/30-18 for the rear on 9X18 and 12X18 ccws. If you get front fenders from cargraphic or GMG then you can move to 265/35-18 front on 18X10s, that's what I'd do.

    I dont necessarily want to disagree with what Yargk is saying about the gap between front and rear tires. On the other side, I would believe that Porsche has a good reason to spec the GT3, and the RS with the dimensions that they chose.
    There is thousands of test kilometers and expansive development work on the ring and on the road that goes into these vehicles these days that I couldnt imagine that other dimensions would make the car handle better.
    And lets face it, the GT3 and RS are developed with special regard to race track use and by no other then Walter Röhrl.

    You're right, Porsche did a lot of testing and as a street car maybe the current split is best. You don't really lose front grip over the 996, you just gain more rear grip on the 997. However, as a track car the reason I don't believe it's optimum is that the cup has 9s and 11s (narrower rear and wider front) the cup S has 10.5s and 12s (this is based off an RS) and the GT3 RSR has 11s and 13s. Also the faster tuner cars move to this setup. Cargraphics car has 9.5s and 12s and GMGs car has 10.5s and 12s. Cargraphic won the tuner grand prix 3 years in a row. So to me if you're thinking about the best track performance, this is the direction you'd want to go in. For the street, it's probably already perfect. BTW I'm not saying you're wrong either, I'm just saying why I believe what I do.

    all the P cup cars have 18 inch rims I believe. that tells you what they think the best tire size is for track...

    I know that most guys doing the Swiss Porsche cup with their Gt3 change for 18' rims
