Mitsubishi already tried the skin concept more than 10 years ago on their HSR.

I love it. Not the shape or the design per se, but the idea. A lot of people get on Chris Bangle's case, but I think he's one of the few that is not in the current, but ahead of their time.
Imagine scratches and dents a thing of the past. Bodyshops won't be happy though. Imagine being able to change the color of your car on a whim. Forget washing, waxing, polishing, just apply a new skin. Imagine being able to shrink the car to fit into tight spaces. What a concept, I think it's great.

How cool would that be. Imagine the top speeds as wings disappeared only to reappear in an instant as brakes are applied for a corner. To bad the FIA now seems to frown upon such technological innovations.

There's an article on it in this weeks Autocar. It was designed in 2001 and was the forerunner of Chris Bangle's flame surfacing designs.

I'm amazed that they've had this sitting in a studio since 2001 and resisted the temptation to show it.
It's the most interesting and influential (on BMW's design direction if nothing else) concept that I've seen in years.
I'd buy a Porsche for the dynamics - but I wish their visual design was half as interesting as the much maligned work of Mr Bangle.

Not sure it'd look so pretty in a wind tunnel. Especially when it's 'eyes' are open!

Depends on how flexible the skin material is.
