    Depreciation thoughts

Guys I am currently going through the quandary of whether to upgrade my current two-year-old 911 s for a facelift version. With no price review details yet available I still think a reasonable spec 911 s is going to be around Pounds74K. The problem is the numbers I have been offered for a trade in are really disappointing (56K) This is something not experienced with my other three changes. What do you guys consider a reasonable depreciation % and for those currently trading against a facelift how have you found the cost to change? I know from the two dealers from who I am purchased previously that the new facelift is not selling as well as expected. Looking at the condition of my car and its low mileage they may have to add me to the "no thank you sir" list.

    Re: Depreciation thoughts

Can't comment on the depreciation but Pounds74K - if lucky - my C2S facelift specced to Pounds80K - less Pounds19.50!!!!

Agreed mine is about that as well !

    Re: Depreciation thoughts

thanks Mex, have you had the final price increase please?

    Re: Depreciation thoughts

Not exactly - strangely I had accurate prices for all options but not base price of car - for my order they processed at current price plus 3% - saying that will be worst case and they will adjust accordingly......I assume tomorrow once press embargo is lifted!!!

I have the base price of Pounds70360 on my order form

    Re: Depreciation thoughts

I did point out your price at the time but couldn't be bothered arguing (there was too much stress speccing remember!!!)....I'm sure they can't charge me more that MRRP.

    Re: Depreciation thoughts

Nidge, who's offering you Pounds56k? I've recently asked about trading my 2 year old C2S with X51 and PCCB, 7k miles and was told not much more than Pounds50k. I'm not exactly thrilled as the car cost more than Pounds85k new.

They also want to jack up the price of my turbo cab order by another Pounds2k on the base price + more for some of the options, e.g. sport chrono plus goes up from about Pounds1k to over Pounds2600 for no apparent reason other than Porsche want to make even bigger profits. I'm thinking about cancelling the order and keeping the C2S.

    Re: Depreciation thoughts

Yeah, my 2006 C2S which was Pounds72k new has depreciated significantly. You can blame the 100,000 997's produced last year and I was offered Pounds50k a couple of months ago, so probably about Pounds48/49k now. Even worse when the face lift arrives.

    Re: Depreciation thoughts

P-car depreciation has increased in recent years. In the US my experience is that these cars depreciate 9-10%/year in the first five years (more in the first 2 years).

If one worries about depreciation, one should not trade a P-car often, or one should by used (3 years old w/ low miles).

An I suspect it will be worse with the 997, because there are more of them made, and many will be dumped now for the Mk2.

    Re: Depreciation thoughts

In the US, when is the best time to buy a C4S CAB- 2006- 2008? If I wait until Dec 08, what could I expect to pay for an 07/08 with <>5000 miles? Would I save much money, or should I buy new next year?

    Thanks,

    Thump

I imagine that as soon as 997 Mk2 orders are fulfilled for 997 Mk1 customers, there will be a number of used 997s and the price will drop. I would say check starting at the end of the year and beyond.

    Re: Depreciation thoughts

I bought used C2S in Oct last year with the intention of buying FL997 in Sept. The offer my local OPC made has forced me to stick with my existing car. Even with the 1st Pounds20K lost, it's still a hard loss to swallow so I figure I'll simply wait for 998 and enjoy what I've got. (I may upgrade to the latest wheels as mine has the awful Carrera S wheels - yuk! - probably when tyres are needed)

Perversly, I probably enjoy my car more than I would a new one. Allthough it's immaculate, I don't have the hang-up of parking or driving it too hard. So in a way, it's probably a blessing!

Part of the appeal of 911 ownership was that if you could afford to buy, you could run one for 12-18 months for Mondeo depreciation money, now that's changed. I simply can't afford to blow Pounds20K in 18 months (especially as I do less than 3K miles year).

I also find it telling that my local OPC (Hatfield) have 4 launch cars available. Time was you had to wait 12 months+ for a car - hence reasonable residuals. It's a shame that over supply has ruined ownership in the UK.

    Re: Depreciation thoughts

It would seem the 997 FL is just enough change in performance to make the case for someone to upgrade??!! I think your right ADias, the end of the year could make for a good deal on a 08....right?

    Re: Depreciation thoughts

Over supply...hmmm funny you mention that. I have been looking in the NYC area and much to my surprise, there are alot of C2S/CAB around for sale..2/3 years ago when I seriously looked, I couldn't find squat.. The C4S Cab is what everyone wants where I live, but good luck finding one. I was considering buying a new one when it came in last month and as I hesitated with "PDK" dancing in my head, some walked in and paid cash for it...
From what I have gathered, the dealers here are buying all the TT and C4S's they can from private sellers, they are gone in a matter of days from being posted.

I am now thinking that an 06 CS2/CAB might be the way to go...great car..and have the first 30% hit taken by someone else..If I hold on to it, cost of ownership is reduced a little bit.

There is no way to get into this game, without having any "skin" in the game I guess..I really plan on holding on to the car as I only drive 4k a year...so an 06 might be the way to go? AM I wrong?

    Re: Depreciation thoughts

FWIW in the UK, that would be the way I would go assuming you could find one with the right options. In the UK, you'd probably now expect to take a similar Pounds20K hit within the next 2 years, but at least you've saved Pounds20K upfront.

I'd expect my 05 C2S to be worth Pounds33K in Oct 09 having paid Pounds52K in Oct 07.

Bridggar, I could remember telling you not to go for the mk1. The value by the time you sell it to purchase the mk11 will be ridiculous.

    Re: Depreciation thoughts

The whole of the UK car market is struggling at the moment and Porsche is no different unfortunately. I just sold my 56 plate turbo to my OPC with only 3,400 miles on it and got Pounds85k against a list of Pounds102.5k new in 06. They are keen for me to take a facelift C2S but with a decent resale spec taking it towards Pounds80k I just couldn't summon up sufficient enthusiasm to compensate for another Pounds15k plus hit in the next 12 months (I seriously doubt that the revised model is going to enjoy strong residuals).
