cayman s swap for an r reg 993

thinking of swapping the cayman s which has been amazing for a late 993 as I still love that amazing shape. (obv will depreciate less which is a good thing but not of huge importance). Having never driven one I presume I may get a shock about how dated it feels and might well be a mistake as it will live outdoors. Anyone got any advice on the matter?? Cheers

993 does not feel very dated if you upgrade the suspension. It's a fine car. Cayman is a great drive though...

Re: cayman s swap for an r reg 993

993 has floor hinged pedals with a big offset and a very antiquated dashboard - you either love it or not. 993 engines are pretty much bullet proof bar the odd leak from ageing seals etc. The best 911 shape.

However, its 11 years old so age related items will need replacing, bushes bearings etc etc. And there are issues with rust around windscreen bottom corners and similar around the rear screen.

If you don't mind a bit of tinkering and DIY then a 993 is very rewarding - as a daily driver, living outside i'm not sure its such a good bet.

Re: cayman s swap for an r reg 993

The only problem I see with the 993 is its lack of modern safety features like all the air bags and PSM. I like having the latest safety features. Besides that I think the 993 is the best looking car Porsche has made. Personally I would keep the cayman, mainly because of the safety features and I currently don't need 2+2 seating.

Inspect it before buying and then Give it a proper restore and you will be more happy than any modern porsche can make you.

Re: cayman s swap for an r reg 993

For me its about if you like:

    Old or new.
    Yesterday or tomorrow.
    Cables or electronics.
    Peace of mind or maintenance.
    Classic or contemporary.
    Radio or Sat Nav.
    Rear engine or mid engine.
    Your spec or someone else's.

Re: cayman s swap for an r reg 993

I agree with Grant and DavidSF. I'll only sell my CS to upgrade to a 997S.You now own modern bang for bucks. If you buy "old" now its going to be much older when you want to sell again. Speaking for myself I went through this whole debate when I decided on the CS in the first place.

Re: cayman s swap for an r reg 993

It'll certainly seem pretty old in comparison. I had a '97 Carrera S in great condition and low miles - sold it 18 months ago for a 997S. That was night and day difference in terms of build, handling, equipment, seating position, driving experience. I had a go in a friend's 993 a couple of weeks ago and it really did feel old in comparison to the new stuff. (hmm, hard to describe, this, without seeming like pointing out the bleedin obvious). After a few mins it put a smile on my face but I don't think i'd go back given the choice.

Depreciation would definitely be less, but expect to pay more for servicing, although 993 is definitely the best of the aircooled 911s in that respect.

    Good summary

Re: cayman s swap for an r reg 993

I wouldn't go for that purchase... A cayman S is a fast car, its technology is unbelievable and every spec of the car contributes to the driver's overall satisfaction. A regular 993 is slower and the only reason for someone to buy this car is just its classical shape that will never be forgotten. For its age it's a good car, but I'm not sure if it will contribute to the driver's satisfaction at all. Especially after owning the lightweight cayman S. Moreover, it's not fair for the cayman to actually compare it to the the 993... Too different. If this purchase had to do with swapping a cayman S to a 996 it would be a more fair comparison really.

Re: cayman s swap for an r reg 993

But before you do buy a Cayman, try out the new BMW M3 with the seven speed M Double Clutch transmission. I had a blast in one this morning. Simply incredible. I've been promised an afternoon's unaccompanied drive one weekend which I'm really looking forward to

I'm curious . . . what would you suggest doing to the 993 suspension Grant?

The stock suspension has German-made Monroe shocks & struts and they are lousy (and useless after 40,000 miles).

Most basic upgrade would swap the Monroes for Bilstein HD shocks and struts with either factory M030 springs or aftermarket H&R Red sport springs (my preference). I set the ride height to Euro 993RS height plus 10mm on both axles (a bit lower than Euro Carrera height).

Then changing to ROW 993TT sway bars (or adjustable ones, even better) is a nice upgrade.

Many folks like the adjustable Bilstein PSS9 or PSS10 shocks over the HD's (similar quality with adjustability) and if you're making a track car, then consider KW, Moton, JRZ, etc.

A strut brace is an easy and effective upgrade too.

Make sure you get a good alignment and corner-balance too. Many shops don't know how to set the kinematic toe adjustment in the rear suspension, so seek an expert.

Some good install info at the DIY section of www.p-car.com

The 993 is beautiful and the best looking 911 Porsche has ever made IMHO. The problem is it lacks the modern safety features such as all the air bags and PSM.

I think I'll print that out and keep it safe for when I get one!
    Thanks.
