    The new Boxster

From the car magazine web site. Also some pictures and I think we have allready seen some of them. I will post them all just in case that I'm wrong and I have them from another part. Enjoy!

Porsche is about to unveil the new 911, but we've already caught the next Boxster on test in Germany. These spyshots are of the Boxster S - nine months before its public debut at the 2009 Geneva motor show.

Visual changes will be minor, but under the bodywork will be new direct-injection engines and a revised interior.

So what's new on the Porsche Boxster?
At the front, the Boxster gains a Cayman-inspired snout, with gently reprofiled headlights and indicators. The central front air dam - reserved for the S model spied in our pictures - gets a trapezoid air intake, as opposed to today's oval aperture.

At the rear this Boxster S continues with twin exhaust pipes but the biggest changes are the LED rear lights. Not only are they lighter and smaller than regular bulbs, they also react quicker to prods of the middle pedal. Some say they look cooler, too...

Tell me more about Porsche's new direct-injection technology for the engines?
As with the facelifted 911, the 2009 facelifted Boxster is due to receive direct injection. No hard and fast figures are available yet, but looking at the outputs of the 911 and Cayenne with similar tech, you can safely expect power increases of around 13 percent while fuel consumption falls by 15 percent.

With the next 911 Carrera expected to produce 340bhp, it clears the way for the Boxster S to produce more than 310bhp; the entry-level 2.7-litre Boxster should make over 260bhp.

What else is new on the next Boxster?
In line with the new 911, the Boxster will get a new interior with a hard-drive based sat-nav system and larger screen. The multitude of buttons will be cleared up and there will be a black as opposed to silver finish, according to quick glimpses inside the latest prototypes.

    And will it get PDK?
Porsche's seven-speed double-clutch transmission has yet to be confirmed for the Boxster; the new 911 - due to be unveiled in June 2008 - is the first company's first car with a DSG-style transmission. It's said to boost performance with lightning fast gearchanges, while economy jumps to approaching 30mpg.

Once the refreshed Boxster and Boxster S arrive in 2009, that'll be pretty much it for the range, beyond some run-out special editions just before the all-new car arrives in 2011.

Unlike the 911, which will seed umpteen variations with Carrera and Carrera S models with fixed or convertible roofs, Targa tops and four-wheel drive, plus Turbo, GT3 and GT2 variants all in the pipeline.

    I don't

    Re: The new Boxster

    Looks nice.

    Re: The new Boxster

I like the expected increases in horsepower and fuel economy, but I am not digging the droopy drawer back-lights on the facelift. However, if they can bring up horsepower to 320, it may grow on me.

315HP is ok for you? (345-30=315)

    Re: The new Boxster

Absolutely, any gain is good, but would have preferred a 25 hp increase. Call me selfish. My point is, the styling changes don't seem to do it for me, as I am very fond of the 2005 - 08 body style. Big changes in performance would change that equation for me. I just don't know if 20hp is going to do it for me, as it is seems to be almost 1/2 the power increase as touted above, stating 13% (wouldn't that be approximately 330 hp?) I guess we shall see in the next few months as to what really does come out of Porsche. No matter what, the Boxster is and will be one of the finest roadsters available on the planet.

    Re: The new Boxster

...Wow, a 340 hp 911 with a DSG-style transmission that gets almost 30 mpg!? Part of the Boxster's appeal is fast fun without being too wasteful. If true, then I could be drawn toward the 911 coupe as my next sports car. Will be interesting to see what the automotive journals get once the car is out. ...Now if only the 911 also would get smaller like the original.

    Re: The new Boxster

I agree with VinceSF. Both the headlight and tailight changes are almost arbitrary, and not necessarily better looking. Seems to me that the sole purpose of the droopy tailights is to match the rest of the lineup, starting with the Cayenne. Well, that and to give '09 owners justification for buying the new version over any previous one.

Also, I too wonder if any figure less that a 10% increase in hp is really noticable in day-to-day driving. 315hp is appreciated, but probably just barely. I'd almost welcome more the increased fuel efficiency. Or, better yet: maxxing out any hp above 315 while maintaining current fuel efficiency figures.

A 10% increase in power for the 987S would mean approximately a 29.5 hp gain, which puts it in the 325 hp range. I keep hearing that we can "safely expect a 13% power increase with direct fuel injection", which would mean 333 hp. Let's face it, if the Boxster S comes out with 315 hp, that's almost half of the power increase that we can "safely expect", and would be barely noticeable in the performance department. As for fuel economy, I am told that we can "safely expect a 15% increase in fuel efficiency, which would also be significant, but let's face it, is that why we buy Porsche's? If so, let's all buy a Toyotal Prius and call it a day. In short, a 20hp increase and some arbitrary, not necessarily better looking styling changes, are not necessarily going to win over current 987 owners to trade up. Are the changes significant enough to attract new customers to the Boxster? Personally I don't believe so, but time will tell.

    Re: The new Boxster

    Hello,

My first post on this forum, hello everyone. As an owner of an '08 Boxster S I can answer your question VinceSF. No, those changes in your latter scenario wouldn't be enough to get me to trade up. It'd have to be at least 325+ hp and the "expected" gas mileage increase to become worth the trade up. I don't think I will particularly like the cosmetic changes, but will wait to see one in person before I pass judgment on that.

    Re: The new Boxster

Maybe the past can answer the future. I made up my mind about wanting a 987 back in 2005, but found getting one convenient in 2007. Would I feel the need to get an '08 if I already had a '05 or '06? The incremental hp additions of the '08 would be welcome, but Porsche already had a winner with the 2004-2005 redesign. I could change individual comfort and interior components, but wouldn't miss the difference between 285 and 296 hp.

My guess is that existing owners will be tempted to update their rides when the 987 and 997 are near-completely revamped. Some of us will take delivery of new versions of the Boxster. Others may try the even-newer 911. Still more will be just happy with what they have. For '09 however, the upcoming facelifts are just as the name implies, and similar to the 996/Boxster refresh between '02 and '03.

Hey Welcome, djmiroku! I have an '08 Boxster and love it. I like this forum so hope you enjoy this place too.

    Re: The new Boxster

Personally not a fan of lenses being coloured in to give a different shape, looks like those horrble light shades you see in car styling magazines. The revised exhaust and rear bumper looks good , but I hope they integrate the rear reflectors into the light cluster rather than have stick on items on the rear bumper. The power increase and improvment in MPG could tempt me , unless the new boxster is worth wiating for.

    Re: The new Boxster

Is'nt the lens coloring part of the camouflage? I sure hope so!!!

    Re: The new Boxster

    Berty,
As mentioned above, the tape over the headlights and the rear lights are camoflage, to make the car resemble the existing 987. Also, the red refelctors on the rear are said to be stick ons, because the real reflectors are covered by the camoflage. No worries mate!

    Re: The new Boxster

i love the look of this thing. Looks like a small supercar that no one else notices but me haha

    Re: The new Boxster

Is the rear bumper different? To me, the rear looks fatter and heavier.

If Boxster S will have 320 hp, then I will probably replace by 997C2S with one.
