Car Sits for SIX weeks? Holy Cow.

I might be gone for six weeks (for fun) and car will just be sitting there.

Other than standard winterizing practice; what do you guys think about that?

    Is it a mistake?

Should I get someone to drive it? Hoooooooooooly Crrrrrrrrrrrr*p !!!!!!! I can't believe I even ____thought_____ that!

I think I'm gonna be siiiiiiiick.

Re: Car Sits for SIX weeks? Holy Cow.

6 weeks isnt a big deal. If you can keep it trickle charged that would be the best. Believe there is some stuff in the manual for certain locking etc. if you're going to be away for a while.

Drive till almost empty & then put a few gallons of fresh gas in right before you leave. I wouldnt fill it up because then you have more old gas to go through when you get back. Although some will receommend filling up all the way, I've done both and find the prior method works best. I wouldnt use Stabil for that length of time, not necessary.

Put tire pressure to the highest psi.

I keep my F430 on trickle for longer than that & my bikes even longer.

Re: Car Sits for SIX weeks? Holy Cow.

Most Porsches spend more time than that cooling their heels in the showroom before they're sold!!

If it were for more than 3 months, then I'd do something to tend the battery. But for 6 weeks you're fine. I know, I've done it many times. I don't even know why you'd "winterize", it's wasted time...

Trickle charger works great. Be sure to lock the car with the remote - helps prevent further electrical draw. I've always been told to fill the gas tank to avoid any condensation - fill and add a fuel stabilizer...but then again 6 weeks isn't that long.

Re: Car Sits for SIX weeks? Holy Cow.

Condensation isn't a concern on modern cars with plastic tanks...

6 weeks isn't enough to concern yourself with the fuel... Fill it up, leave it empty, won't make any difference.

    Look no further!

Re: Car Sits for SIX weeks? Holy Cow.

Don't worry about it, i was supposed to be away for three weeks and ended up away for just over 10!!! YES, a three week biz trip and short vacation turned into a 10 week work nightmare, BUT, my car started up without worry!!

Also, I don't know if the cars are driven on and off to the boat when they are shipped overseas from Germany but the I can tell you to most places in Australiasia and South America the lead time is definitely more than 4 weeks - maybe even 6!

Re: Car Sits for SIX weeks? Holy Cow.

I just got my Mini Cooper S running after sitting for 2 years (originally sat due to a flat tire and then the battery went dead and I just never got around to dealing with it until recently). A testament to modern car design & mfg: turbo/supercharged cars are supposed to be more sensitive to long periods of inactivity (the oil seals can deteriorate and cause nasty problems). I just added 1/2 quart of oil and disconnected the plugs while I cranked the engine over a few times. Reconnected the plug wires and the car started up without even stumbling.

6 weeks shouldn't be any problem but leave the 911 hood unlatched so if the battery dies, you can still reach the battery (at least my '99's hood is electrically latched and the battery is under the hood). Also, if you have a safely locked garage, you can save battery juice by not engaging the security system.

Re: Car Sits for SIX weeks? Holy Cow.

That shouldn't be a problem. I stored mine over the winter (about 6 months) with a trickle charger and increased tire pressure. Just remember not to freak if your car doesn't respond when you use the key fob to unlock the doors. When I didn't drive it for about a week, the car falls "asleep." All I did was to pull on the door handle and try the remote again and it works.

I have to go through the same routine, my car goes "to sleep" after a week or so.... Which is all the time anymore, I think I've driven my 997 maybe 3 days in the last 3 months!

Even with the tire-pressure increased, you'll have several miles of bumpy-ride until they warm up and regain their memory... Nothing to worry about, nothing at all... Don't make a mountain out of a molehill...

And when you get back into the car after 6 weeks of lay-off, WOW will you be impressed!!! That's what I love most about an occassional-driver, you get to have that "new car thrill" over and over and over and over again!

Re: Car Sits for SIX weeks? Holy Cow.

There is the bright side to spending six weeks with an extremely moderate performing rental car.
Your car will absolutely shine by comparison.

Re: Car Sits for SIX weeks? Holy Cow.

Six weeks is nothing. I left my bike on a trickle charger in the garage for at least 4 months this winter. You won't flat spot the tires either, so just leave the pressure the same. The fuel is not an issue. With today's fuel you don't need to add a stabilizer like the good ol' days. You may need to use the key to unlock the door when you get back, just be sure to press a button on the remote or put a key in the ignition after you open the door.

Re: Car Sits for SIX weeks? Holy Cow.

    I think it's a mistake!

No way I could last for 6 weeks without driving my Turbo!!!!!!

...I get incredibly frustrated and irritable after even a week away

My idea of going away for 'fun' always INCLUDES my Porsche. It's even coming on my honeymoon this summer!!

Doing this run through Wales at the weekend: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDtKmdRLGUE&feature=user and I am planning on crushing any R8's I see on the trip

Very untrue, and quite the opposite....

Today's fuels have abhorrent shelf-life... I've been battling this with our collection, finally coming to the conclusion that the best way to go is (prior to putting-up) run it down close to empty, and then put in a few gallons of 100 unleaded or 110 leaded (depending on vehicle) race fuel and running it long enough to pull the race gas through the entire system. The race gas is very stable, has a long shelf life... Pump gas these days is just awful for stability.

But I've ALSO had really bad experiences with stabilizers... They're o.k. if you're just parking something for a SEASON... But God-forbid you leave it sit longer... When the fuel decides to over-ride the stabilizer, you wind up with a gooeyer more varnishy mess than you would have had with no stabilizer at all...

Again, experience, cars with stabilizer that I've had to yank and replace/rebuild entire fuel systems. What a mess...

So bottom line is, if you're going to park something for beyond, say, 3 months... Run all the gas down to almost empty, and pop in some race-fuel... And then make sure you get her out and run through that fuel within 6-8 months tops.

Again, 6 weeks? Childs-play, just park her and walk out of the garage.

Re: Car Sits for SIX weeks? Holy Cow.

The last years I didnt drive my car over the winter and put it into garage for 4-5 months. Never did anything special, just plugged a battery charger.

Dont worry - my cars always started after the first turn of the machine. No probs at all!

Re: Car Sits for SIX weeks? Holy Cow.

Thanks fellas. OK: Just slap on bat maint etc. and walk away (garage is room temp and not damp).

Given the problems you've experienced, and the fact that I've never had an issue with any car or motorcycle I've stored over the winter, (for 4 - 5 months), I wouldn't touch it. I simply fill my tanks and let it ride. I do know that the gas up here has anti-freezing agents in it starting in the fall and that may help stabilize it.

FWIW, Exxon states that fuel should be used within 30 days of purchase, but you can safely store it for up to 6 months in a container that is filled almost to the top and is stored in cool, dry conditions.

Re: Car Sits for SIX weeks? Holy Cow.

My problems stem from cars I've bought that had stabilizer in them, and from experience with today's gas in many of my cars that sit for extended periods (6 months or longer). That's why I've moved toward race fuel, which has been flawless.

I can't "fill my tanks". The local fire inspector would have a bit of a problem with me filling 160+ cars with gas inside a building shared with 100,000 square feet of mostly card-board-packaged inventory...

I am ordered to leave no more than 5 gallons of gas in any car that is stored in my building... So a few gallons of race gas is the ticket...

I can tell you stories of cars that I parked for 7-8 years without starting, and plopped a battery in, checked fluids, and damn if it wouldn't run on the fuel in the tank!! But I wouldn't get away with that today, you can SMELL the fuel going sour in a matter of 6-8 months.

I think your policy of full-tank and "let it ride" will be fine and dandy, you won't have any problem.
