After market wheels and cooling of the ceramics

I have 4 GP7 wheels to be fitted when my car arrives, I have taken them to my OPC as they are going to arrange for them to be painted, I have a concern, my OPC have told me that if I do any spirited driving they will not cool the ceramics they will over heat , the factory wheels have a funnel effect which sucks air into the wheels when they are moving, the GP7 do not, I have taken a photo of the 2 wheels together to try and show you the differance, I really like the wheels but now I am worried about the ceramics, any advice is greatly appriciated

The GT3/GT2, CGT, 997 S w/ Ceramics doesnt have the "funnel effect" Turbo wheels & they dont have a problem. That stuff about the Turbo wheels was Porsche marketing. Dont sweat it.

Cheers Greg, they got me all worried, now I can relax again

Exactly - I often wonder what the hell these guys are thinking when they make comments like this. Did he actually say this with a straight face?!

Re: After market wheels and cooling of the ceramic

The brake cooling comes from the ducts in the front not from the wheels. If the wheel funnels were that effective they would steer the car!

Re: After market wheels and cooling of the ceramic

OK, I looked up what the official images suggested. Note that pic01 is the rear wheel, pic 02 is of a 996 gen, and pic 03 is of the 996GT2, the first car to have PCCB (?)
In none of the three images and accompanying comments, any note was made regarding the rims. The last image has as comment: " In order to cool the brake disc and brake caliper, a proportion of the air flowing into the vehicle is redirected via air deflectors directly to the front brake system." Again, no note of the rim involved.

Another point: any "thunneling effect" of the rim would have to come from rotary movement of the wheel. Note that at this moment, and also in the past the turbo rims have been ASYMMETRIC! That means that there is only one wheel, for both left and right side. Conclusion; If any thunneling effect exists, the air would be sucked into the wheel on one of the sides. On the other side, air would be blown out. Another effect could be that the inside of the rim wall is tapered. (Getting wider going from the center of the car towards the outside. Then, air "getting thrown to the inside of the wheel" by the rotary movement would also be forced toward the outside of the car. I find this highly unlikely.
I hope this helps in your decision. And now for the pics!

Re: After market wheels and cooling of the ceramic

Somehow I got the impression that the ceramics NEEDS more heat than the steel in order to work effecively. Which was one of the reason they work better on track than on street as the track usage gave the brakes more heat. While the heat maybe too much for regular steel ones, they were just right for the ceramics.

Look at F1, every now and then the commentators would comment on the brakes were cold and not at operating temperatures yet.

Re: After market wheels and cooling of the ceramic

What I understood of the early stories when PCCB was introduced, that they needed "track-type" braking, e.g. short and hard. During daily (comfort) use, it is more normal to brake longer and softer. This type of heating of the brakes was detrimental for the discs, resulting in really short lifecycles.

However, it can be so that a spinning rim is used as a fan to cool the brake discs, sucking cold air from the underside of the car, through the wheel. But the 996 and 997 turbo rims are not symmetric, resulting in asymmetric behavior of the airstream around the car, which is something you wouldn't want. Therefore, I think this is not true. I wouldn't be too worried to replace stock rims with aftermarket ones. If you want to be perfectly sure, contact Porsche Germany.

If Porsche Germany responds at all, they'll just say use the OEM wheels.
