    Cargraphic 997 Turbo conversion?

    Hey all,

We're currently looking into buying a 997 turbo, probably a 2009 build, and therefore would like to know a few things. My dad and I already tried the 997 turbo tiptronic (we're definitely getting a tiptronic), and it was fast alright, but not blazingly faster than our current unmodified BMW M5, which is why we would probably tune the turbo a bit. I've been reading along on this forum for a while, and judging from all the different posts about tuning kits, the stage II cargraphic conversion kit seems really neat. I have a few questions though: So far I haven't seen a single cargraphic tiptronic turbo, do they make this or is the massive torque too much for the automatic transmission? Does cargraphic offer warranty for the remaining time of factory warranty? (Like Sportec for example). At last but not least, what is your take on the liability of the car after tuning it? Anyone had any problems with tuning a 997 turbo - also non-CG?

As you probably can tell this is the first time we're seriously considering some heavy tuning on one of our cars, so I apologize for all the questions

    Happy motoring

    1) I believe CG do mod Tiptronic cars - contact your local dealer though to be sure.

    2) The exhaust comes with a 2 year warranty. However, the ECU remap VOIDS your Porsche engine warranty. If you want warranty then Ruf 550 kit may be your best bet - although the most expensive option.

    3) No issues thus far. If anything my car 'feels' healthier. It revs easier, turbos are much smoother, and even fuel economy has improved

    Re: Cargraphic 997 Turbo conversion?

Thanks for your answers. I must admit the warranty is a pretty important issue as we've had quite some trouble with the M5 - would've been very expensive without warranty. Have you by any chance got some performance figures for the RUF 550? 0-100 times etc.?

    Re: Cargraphic 997 Turbo conversion?

See 'Performance Table' thread above this one for performance numbers.

Here's how the CG 544 vs Ruf 550 kits compare...

    Re: Cargraphic 997 Turbo conversion?

Very interesting - hideous launch for the RUF (100-200 times are almost identical though). Are there articles out there on the RUF 550? Since it's performed by a rennteam member, any chance that one could elaborate what happened at the launch of the RUF?

One nice looking car you got there mate.

I second that. The engine feels much better after the Cargraphic (Stage II) upgrades. The power delivery is smoother and there is less turbo lag. Interestingly, the fuel economy has improved as well.

Note the Ruf kit cost about x1.5 more than CG, and about x3 more than most other Stage II kits.

    Re: Cargraphic 997 Turbo conversion?

Very nice, that definitely explains the 0-100 sprint for the turbo. When you're already spending so much on a car, I don't think it's worth to save those few extra thousand dollars over a warranty - it is down to RUF 550 and CG Stage II, and I would still love some more opinions on tuned Turbos' reliability.

    Re: Cargraphic 997 Turbo conversion?

Ruf only give you 12 months though. So it's not like it's a complete replacement.

997TT properly tuned to this power level should last pretty well. I don't know what the reliability of the tip is at this torque level (you need to make some enquiries on this) but typically 800NM will chew up your 3rd gear on a manual pretty quickly.

Engine components should last OK since temperatures should not be silly so you avoid melted heads, oval cylinders etc - the main problem IMO with tuning vs warranty is that when something silly goes wrong (which would have gone wrong anyway regardless of the tune) like cam cover leakage, a turbo failing or a valve train issue then they just wriggle straight out of it and point to the tune, a few items like these can end up costing quite a bit and if you are really unlucky some weak component which would have failed anyway will fail causing serious engine damage and cost you the ~30K Euro for a new crate motor -this would have been covered by the warranty....

Edit: the good thing about the 997tt motor is that if you had a catastrophic failure you can always get an idependant to rebuild it replacing just the bent parts so it should never cost you that ~30K Euro for a crate engine..
