Tell him you won't race him because you're in your wife's 997 TT.

Re: GT-R Next To Me At a Stop Light : Now What?

If you feel you're in mood just race him, if not, just ignore him. You're not obligated in any way to race all cars that stand next to you, even if you're driving a 997 TT... You're not proving anything anyway. Also the Nissan could be chip tuned... You wouldn't know anyway...

GT-R Next To Me At a Stop Light : Now What?

... You actually noticed it? Shame on you... ;-)

Re: GT-R Next To Me At a Stop Light : Now What?

Make an appointment to have your haircut - with his boss (the R8 driver).

Re: GT-R Next To Me At a Stop Light : Now What?

I do what I always do. Drive off when the light turns green.

And lastly, just to make a small point of clarity in this... Who makes the Porsche sports seats? Lear.... Who makes almost all of the seats for Ford, and many for GM?..... Lear.........

Porsche might be the wrong example on this account with their cost-saving mentality. However do you know what prices per part each single manufacturer is willing to pay? I can tell you from first hand experience that there is some significant divergence. Pistons from a well-known supplier - GM: less than one dollar, BMW: couple of bucks.

However I agree with you that the subject is far to complex and extensive to cover in one post.

Re: GT-R Next To Me At a Stop Light : Now What?

    Yep, too much to cover...

But regarding your piston example, one must also take into consideration the size of the production-run.... If you're contracting for 1.6 million pistons, versus 1/4 million pistons, alot of the up-front costs, R&D, tests, check fixtures, set-up costs, etc.etc... can be spread (amortized) over the larger production-lot, netting a lower per-piece price that may (or may not) have anthing to do with inferior materials, tolerance, or design..

And NO I'm not saying GM pistons are better than BMW pistons.. I have no idea... I'm just pointing out production realities of how cost builds into volume.

Fully understand and agree with what you write, but on the other hand piece-prices are not decided purely on the size of production runs.

To stay with the example of pistons: The thermal and mechanical loads that a piston is subjected to in an engine producing 100 hp/liter will be much, much higher than those seen by a piston in an engine producing 70 hp/liter.
This will affect the materials used, production tolerances (consistency of wall thicknesses, weight matching), component complexity (ring design, oil channels), and the intensity of the development programm to be absolved until the part actually works.

So small production runs of high performance products have higher unit costs for more reasons than just reduced production batch sizes.

Re: GT-R Next To Me At a Stop Light : Now What?

..the 997 Turbo S should do it...can;t wait...

Re: GT-R Next To Me At a Stop Light : Now What?

If you read Car and Driver this month, I would suggest you stand on the gas and watch him lag behind. Might be able to do better in a Tip.

Oh yes, I understand perfectly, I was just injecting the volume-impact on cost so that it would be understood that the price-difference was not due ENTIRELY to the substance of the product, either perceived or real...

Also, there's nothing "poor quality" about producing a product to a design-objective, i.e. it would be unnecessary to produce a piston to a specification that is not necessary for the design...
