    Water pump failure...

Went to the garage this morning and saw a pool of water under the rear of my 997S.

Cut to the chase - after investigation..it's a knackered water pump. Usual procedure...Porsche Assistance - Lowloader to OPC - Courtesy Car - wait for OPC to call...

    Anyone had this problem..

    Re: Water pump failure...

Sorry for this but I did not...
Hope they dont keep the car too long

stop whinging mate just get the car fixed

    Re: Water pump failure...

How about some more facts which may provide meaningful information as well - How many miles, any unsual activity (track das etc) and finally, what does the shop say was the cause...
    Cheers,

    Re: Water pump failure...

I usually change the water pumps on my cars well before they fail as preventive maintenace. Once the pump on a BMW failed suddenly and the car overheated as a consequence. Since then I replace them when they show even small signs of minute leakage or looseness around the axis or at around 3 year intervals. It is a relatively cheap part anyway.

Sorry to bore you -'mate'- I thought that part of this forum's function was to share situations and circumstances concerning our joint interest i.e. Porsches!!!

Obviously you subscribe to a differing point of view....which is exactly?????

I was trying to be brief and to the point pending the report from the OPC which I won't get until tomorrow at best.

The car has 26,000 on the clock and has never been tracked.

Jeeez - all I was asking is... has anyone else had a sudden water pump failure as I couldn't find one in the search function.

The part must have failed for some manufacturing reason. If you always used the original P-coolant the pump should not fail, at least this early.

I disagree that water pumps in 996s/997s should be replaced every 3 years. Ten years, maybe.

    Re: Water pump failure...

How did it fail exactly? Casing crack? Shaft seal? Hose fitting? Hose itself? Would be nice to know if you can find out.

    Thanks.

    Re: Water pump failure...

I had the pump replaced on my 987S (06MY) after about 6k miles due to what the OPC said was a small dried coolant stain on the housing.

There is a TSB available on reentech.org that says in usual Porsche fashion...'several pumps have been changed due to minor stains, evidence of leakage, but when later tested back at the factory have found to be fine - do not replace for this reason'

A similar statement was issued about the old CDR-23 radios, which kept coming up with a STOP message, but when tested back at factory were fine - hardly surprising given turning off ignition and then back on cured the STOP message. Root cause analysis might be good at Porsche but they don't like publishing the results.

    Re: Water pump failure...

John mine failed on my Cayenne once my odometer reach 50,000. My service guy said it was not unusual and I told him he was full of sh*t. Obviously it was not covered under warranty.

    Re: Water pump failure...

Guys - just brought the car back. OPC verdict... the pump was loose and leaking so they just changed it for a new one under extended warranty. When I asked exactly what caused the failure, they suggested 'bad luck'

Didn't get away scott free - they charged me Pounds32.43 for antifreeze.

They also carried out a free full health check (which was all-clear) and gave it a free mini-valet, which I hadn't asked for.

Must say I was very impressed, yet again, with the service from Porsche Assistance...they are truly on-the-ball.

    Re: Water pump failure...

Mine was seeping early,--I recall it to be around 10,000 miles. Eventually they listened to me and replaced it. Mileage was around 15,000. Mine's an S,--first they had to replace. Your's a 996 or 997 case? (S or not?)

    Dan

Nick, if I were your service guy and you told me I was full of sh*t, I must confess that I might also be ínclined to take the first opportunity to tell you that any problems your car might have were not covered by warranty.

Hummm..., so the thing wasn't bolted down sufficiently? Gasket wasn't compressed enough?

Sounds like they could have just tightened mounting bolts and you'd have been on your way.

That is of course unless gaskets are some freeking new mind-boggling material which can't be re-torqued.

Heck, we're just amateur mechanics and should realize NOTHING makes any sense anymore with these new computerized cars made with space age materials and technologies.

    Re: Water pump failure...

Sounds like a few got out of the wrong side of the bed John. Very abrasive!!

Glad to see you got it sorted with only minor pain to the wallet. The reason I guess they changed it was that if they'd just tightened it up, it's possible the gasket was dirty and it would only be a matter of time before it leaked again.

Replacing it ensures it won't (in theory) be back for the same job doing twice, where ultimately they'll probably change the pump 2nd time round in any case.

26,000 miles John, glad to see your driving it, but I beat you with 32,000 on mine now.

Hi Richard....I'm not doing many long trips like I used to. But yeah, I'm driving it every day and still enjoying the ride.

How did your trip to 'The Ring' go? Have you posted a report yet? I may have missed it having just got back from my golf tour.

    Take care....

Yes indeed. You need to accompany us this August. Would be good to meet up and have a few beers in Germany.

Porsche water pumps have never been noted for longevity on any of their water cooled cars.

They often have a shorter life than even Opel water pumps.

    Why? They are cheaply made!

Hey Richard...thanks so much for the links - fantastic reading and great pics.... thrilling and dramatic!!

I guess you got some revenge on your brother following his Alton Towers prank..

And to think I passed on this experience just to play golf in Portugal...in the rain.

    Re: Water pump failure...

Good to see your car back to full health ,, John..

All the best to you and yours ..

    Re: Water pump failure...

Had water pump failure at 13000 miles. Not a common problem according to mechanic.

Alton Tower's, yeah, I remember that alright. The rides were fine except Oblivion. Cr@pped myself...lol

However, there is always a chance to redeem yourself John in August.

Except, at the Ring they shout "MINI!", instead of Four!
