    A question that bugs me

Just took the new TT for a 1,500 km run from Sydney through the Snowy Mountains in southern New South Wales and northern Victoria. What a joy, especially passing in spots where I could never have contemplated doing so in the old Boxster S. However, in the process I seem to have sucked a good deal of the local insect population into the front radiators. Anybody have any great ideas as to how best to deal with this? Obviously a high pressure water jet sprayed forward from behind the radiators would help but that probably means removing the front bumper or some of the sheeting beneath the car, which I'd like to avoid if possible. I imagine the same issue will eventually occur with the intercoolers - any thoughts?

I treated with the car with stuff called "Glassplexin" immediately after purchase and FWIW the bugs/blood/guts etc. washed straight off with gentle water spray. I don't particularly like plastic film, and I'll deal with stone chips in a couple of years with a front end respray from a trusted shop.

I can also confirm what some others have noticed after 3 or 4,000 kms. When I got home yesterday I thought I had holed one of the mufflers: the exhaust had a significantly louder and meatier note. On checking, there was no damage to the exhaust system, but the sound had somehow "matured" and become a little angrier in a very agreeable way. I suspect performance may also be up a notch or 2 but that's a little harder for me to judge at this stage (however I'll have some fun trying!).

Re: A question that bugs me

Can you use a vacuum cleaner with a small front attachment to suck out the bug debris? This may be the easiest way to clean out most of the mess.

    Jim

P.S. Sounds like driving the TT is like being in a rocket, only traveling on the ground!!!!!!!

Re: A question that bugs me

Saw an interesting thing at the track last weekend. A guy with a GT3 had cut out pieces of the blue A/C filter material and used them to protect his radiators. He said it worked great, no changes in temps or anything. At the end of the track day he simply pealed 'em off and threw them away.

    Hummm..., very interesting solution.

What he's doing is making the cooling system work harder but still within it's capacity.

I'm amazed that these cars have so much capacity. Hot day, noon, traffic jam, black asphalt, and I had AC on full blast and the temp guage didn't move: WOW.

My more conservative idea (which I didn't execute yet) is to get some 1/4 inch (6mm) wire mesh screening and put it in there. Though the mesh gap is big I still think it will stop maybe 50% or more of the bugs from reaching the finer radiator.

They also have this 1/8 inch (3.5mm) mesh used for gutters at Home Depot (usa).

Getting on your back and using a dental pick with nice padding underneath you, would work too.

Re: A question that bugs me

had the same experience crushing grasshoppers and other flying ditrius at speed...i was very surprised that even after this trip which required an hour or so of radiator cleaning the operating oil/water temps did not vary from normal even on a pretty hot day...i also experimented with a couple of throw away radiator facings but in the end just bagged them in favor of a through cleaning of everything after this flying farmland encounter....the event also solidified my belief in 3m film as all the crushed stuff was quickly/easily removed in washing

    1.

Re: A question that bugs me

Thanks guys, some excellent suggestions. I'm going to check out the a/c filter and mesh options. Interesting to hear that cooling was not negatively impacted, and since I intend to use this solution only when the car is moving at highway speeds I think I can be quite comfortable that the radiators will receive adequate airflow.

Go for it! No need to get totally buggy like that.

Even though Porsche does not condone it, what's funny is many of the bras I've seen, have _window_ screen mesh sewed into them and nobody seems to complain. FWIW, I'd personally avoid mesh that's as fine as window screen.

Re: A question that bugs me

Yeah, the current 911 radiator design sucks. The only way to clean them is in fact to remove the bumper - few owners will do that themselves, and costly if done by the dealer.
