Interesting article, but shame he gets the engine size wrong, and although he feels an average driver will never engage the 4 wheel drive, just yesterday it had to cut in on me when I pushed it too fast on a slip lane with loose gravel about. (Clearly I am a very average driver). I do agree the C2 is more fun though and I am very happy to know it is (in his view) the best everyday car in the world.

For sure even with a little bit of rain and fast drive, the C4 is great. I also only wanted C2s, and I had one which I loved. I then got the C4 by 'mistake'...but I have to say I really like it now.
My little video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avT3bKMfh5c was filmed on the wet. An although it does not obviously show, it was very very slippery. The 4WD setup is really great unless you live in an area which is mostly sunny.
I still think the TT is the best everyday car though

I hate to sound like a scum-of-the-Earth traitor but here goes. I think my 04M3 with SMG takes the title of best everyday car. My TT is a little cramped, slung low (requires constant vigilence on road), requires caution with right foot, is even scary to _park_ somewhere/sometimes.
The Bimmer is easy to get in and out of twenty times in a day, is roomy, etc., etc., and etc. .
Oops..., realized this is a contest between TT and C4S. Gotta choose the TT because for most guys blasting down the passing lanes on public highways is all the "performance driving" they can get on a daily basis: TT beats C4S hands down.

Where does the author misrepresent the engine size? He references the C4S's 3.8L flat six with 355 bhp and 295 ft/lb torque. The only error in data that I spotted was a listed 0-60 of 4.8 seconds, which should be 4.6 assuming a manual gearbox. Even the top speed of 179 was right on. Are there other errors that I'm not catching?

The bimmer is a RWD and when the trunk and fuel tank are both empty, it is not too good on the snow even with good snow tires.
Had a 330ci...so fairly similar snow handling. Not bad, but not an EVERYDAY car for me. The road I live in is over 12% inclination...so both our cars are 4wd...end of story!

The whole 2 or 4WD question is also based with where you live. In Germany you only have a slippery road when it is icy and snowy. Compared to the US, where I always get a shock when it starts rain and the road really becomes quickly slippery.
So lot of the 4WD Hype is based for the US market. Thats also something a good friend from Mercedes Benz told me. You see more and more 4WD at BMW, Mercedes, VW and for sure Audi (but this is another story out of two things - firstthey had a different weight base than BMW, second those cars have been constructed as front WD), most of them for the US market.

bmw 330 coupe E92 and snow tires = worse then TT with completely gone summer tires. I did this comparison myself on the gotthard pass this year. I was driving my TT and a friend of mine the 330. He had very big troubles to climb it up as far as it was snowing and started to be slippery.
I took his car over and it was always trying to oversteer and difficult to keep it straight going. Back in my car no problems at all even if my tires were summer ones and they were completely gone.
Just a slight understeer but i was gentle in driving.
I tried to push in tight corners but oversteer was, of course with those tires, very difficult to control
I had a 330cd E46 before and experience turned out to be exactly the same

When you look at the brochures of the latest BMW 3 series they claim to have a perfect weight balance 50/50. An Audi A4 - I suppose - weighs almost the same, and has just a little bit more weight on the front axle (once more, if I'm not mistaken). So why do BMW's have more traction problems? Although I know from my own limited experience that FWD is better uphill in snowy conditions, but in theory should a RWD don't have the advantage because the weights lifts back when going uphill? Looking forward to your comments. It's on my mind for some time, and from time to time it drives me nuts

In very slippery conditions, you want as much weight as possible where it matters: where the power gets to the ground. 50/50 is not enough. An FF setup, or the 911's RR setup, is 60-65%. Huge difference.
A 50/50 weight distribution works wonders... if you have AWD.

The traction problem is only due to the delivery of power, not on the weight distribution. Weight distribution on the rear ==> problems in turns so that the car is easily loading a lot more the rear wheels and so tending to oversteer but better mechanical traction due to more statical weight on the rear tires (more vertical force = more traction force)
