    Assuming the Z06 weight 3200lb with fuel and driver, it needs about 480 WHEEL hp to go under 11 sec, in theory on paper calculations.

    Z06 are advertised at 505hp but most of us know GM underrates those motors, I would not be surprise to see that 505hp number is at the wheel, what the car is actually putting down on the ground.

    What I am surprised is the little difference between stock tires and drag radials, there should be more than 0.15 sec diff, it should be more, like at least 0.5.

    As much as Z06 owners wish we had stock 500rwhp cars, they are not. They are generally known to put down somewhere between 440-460rwhp. Most around or close to 500rwhp have intakes, long tube exhaust w/ cat backs, AND custom tuning and are still having trouble breaking the 500rwhp barrier.

    With that said, there are anomalies. There are people who have had stock cars in the 470 range, which would indicate around 520-30 crank hp. I fortunately have one of those anomalies, as my car is fairly stock (except for K&N) and puts down 493rwhp with a tune. I really wish we did a baseline, but we did not. With about a 10-15% drivetrain loss, that would put the car around 550-560 crank hp at the moment, which should get me into the 10's. I figure the tune was probably worth 20-30hp at most, so the car probably had around 470 stock.

    So, if the car was stock, but tuned, under the best conditions could turn a high 10.

    There are website you can put in the 1/4 mile time/trap speed/ car weight and get rough estimates.

    "Horsepower Results - 1/4 Mile Method
    Your corvette weighs about 3200 pounds and can complete a 1/4 mile in about 10.831 seconds. That means that you've got about 497.77 HP at the wheels, and about 647.11 HP at the flywheel"

    I am not sure about that bold flywheel statement, but I tried about 4 hp calculators for the heck of it and they all came within one or two HP of 497rwhp.

    Too many here are concerned with peak RWHP numbers. Take a peek at a ZO6 dyno graph and take a look at the numbers from 5.5k to 7k The engine is making nearly max power the entire P O W E R B A N D. Remember gentlemen, the most horsepower under the curve is what counts.

    Some insight into those numbers.

    GM garauntees that every Z06 engine has a MINIMUM output of 505bhp. Every engine is certified for the minimum output of 505bhp by a third party testing company. If the engine fails to make 505 bhp it is not used, if it makes 505bhp it is used, if it exceeds 505bhp it is still put into a car.

    Likely that most Z06 engines produce more than the factory stated minimum, GM high ouput engines historically have done so.

    It's actually conceivable that a stock engine could be putting down those kind of numbers. Corvette motors are historically known for having a bit of variance, and definitely "loosen up" with time. I speak from first hand experience. Back in 1996 I purchased a '96 Corvette with an LT4 motor. The LT4 was rated at 330hp. However, this was wildly known to be an underrated number. My car at one time ran a 12.78 @ 109 mph 1/4 mile. This was a complete stock car with stock tires. Extrapolating out it was estimated that my car really was at around 375hp. So a stock Z06 with those numbers is not unbelievable as a few "hot" motors do get out of the Corvette plant.

    I can testify to that, I had one of the first C5s out of the factory, bone stock, I had it dyno-ed at 360 whp corrected. It was suppose to be 345hp at the crank

    With that previous experience I figured that's what GM's been doing for the Z06s.

    I figured GM 'push' out a few hot motors for the initial batch to get good numbers on reviews and stuff. Or they underrated all of them for insurance reasons, not the first time the big 3 underrate their motors.

    With these numbers (I don't doubt them) why would Corvette go for even more powerful engines?! Why don't they instead concentrate on improving the interior of the car?

    IMHO the way the Z06 performance today is more than sufficient to hold its grounds against any supercar for the next 2-3 years.

    ha,

    the new ZR-1 (or Blue Devil or whatever) is actually supposed to have an improved interior, with european leather and all. Might actually make a good buy.

    Yeah but that will render the Z06 as an obsolete or at best a "Lesser model" in less than 2 years life span which is a shame!

    Maybe. It all depends on the price. The Z06 costs around 70k USD in the states, so unless the Blue Devil costs significantly under 100k, there will still be demand for it. I think the ZR-1 will be a much more limited edition, not to mention that a 650 bhp Corvette will take lots of balls to handle. Then again, that is what I think, and things may well turn out completely different. Would make for a great track car though if used Z06 prices plummeted .

    I guess it also depends what horsepower means. Is it STP, SAE or DIN. Most american magazines reporting aftermarket stuff or engine building/projects use STP, which I personally consider a bit cheating and misleading (but it's just me I guess).

    Same engine, two different horsepower ratings:

    "The 505hp rating is generated under SAE J-1349 testing conditions, which correct measured power output to more real-world temperature and atmospheric pressure conditions than the familiar Standard Temperature and Pressure factor used by racers and magazines that corrects to a generous 60 degrees F and denser air conditions. SAE numbers are generally about 5 percent lower than STP. Indeed, the tests we conducted with an as-delivered GMPP LS7 crate engine on a Super Flow 901 dyno at Thompson Racing Engines in Redford, Michigan, generated 546 hp at 6,100 rpm and 514 lb-ft of torque at 4,900 rpm with stock LS7 manifolds but without catalytic converters or stock mufflers and exhaust using the STP factor."
