    First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R

    Quote:
Three diagonal gray stripes in a circle granted me permission to click the 2009 Nissan GT-R's left paddle shifter twice in rapid succession and floor the throttle. No, it's not some kind of hallucination. This symbol, when posted on the shoulder of Germany's autobahn, represents the unrestricted portion where all speed limits are removed.

The speed starts piling on like a roller coaster that's been pointed down Niagara Falls. As the tach needle nearly impales itself on a big 7, I give the right paddle a flick and keep the throttle buried. The engine note is barely interrupted and the falling sensation begins anew, at a rate that seems impossible at velocities this high.

    Quote:
Roll into the throttle at nearly any engine speed and the GT-R drenches you in thrust. Turbo lag from the VR38 3.8-liter V6 is essentially nonexistent, so the immense torque arrives immediately. Indeed, the engine's punch is strongest in the midrange, where the GT-R delivers 434 pound-feet of torque from 3,200 to 5,200 rpm.

As heroic as the engine is, the six-speed dual-clutch automated manual gearbox is a key contributor to the GT-R's personality. The paddle-shifted gearbox, mounted between the rear wheels, changes gears seamlessly with astonishing speed. Shifts are claimed to take just 0.2 second from the time the lever is pulled until the clutch is fully engaged.

    Quote:
The GT-R feels at once substantial and confident, just as the jagged styling suggests. Its 3,836-pound curb weight is borderline obese for a performance car, though it carries its weight well, since most of the heavy bits like the engine don't hang near the extreme ends of the car.

Re: First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R

    2009?

So US buyers could feely privileged that they are buying a future model or what? How vain is that

Re: First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R

    Tim,
    Thanks for the link.

Still, I do not understand what all the fuzz is about?

Engine technology is far from current SOTA. AWD and chassis are really good but, that fast as Nissan claim is this car on the Ring not. Of course that is my opinion.

And still it is ugly car IMHO..

Re: First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R

    3,836lbs.

    Enough said.

    Ditto: still ugly.

Re: First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R

I think it looks pretty good from this angle, and the dark grey wheels on a silver car are cool.

Re: First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R

    Tim,

    You like GT-R, me not...

New RS5 will be much, much nicer car-you will see...

Kreso, what will it cost and how much power? 450 bhp?

Re: First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R

Around 450hp... New sporty AWD... Price? Huh! It will be expensive(more then Euro 80K in Germany)...

Ouch! That's way above M3 territory. I think I'll just stick with the 'civilian' tractor version.

Re: First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R

Yes, indeed it is but, new RS5 will be GT-R competitor. Class above current M3 or C63 AMG...

BTW, drove new M3 last week-amazing car, specially for the money...

I'll try and get a test drive. A guy nearby has a black one and it looks very 'plain'. Really docile and inconspicuous and I wouldn't really have noticed it if it weren't for the M3 badge.

Is .2 seconds itself impressive any more? I seem to recall that the very first generation of Ferrari F1 transmissions, on the F355, could do .2 second shifts... and that they are now well under 0.1 seconds on the 599? Of course, F1 are not twin-clutch so not sure if the times are really comparable.

New RS5 a GT-R competitor? Are you saying that because you know or are you speculating? GT-R has got 997TT performance, so that is a mega big statement you are making there. If true, then I would really like to see it! And would definitely buy one too!

Forthcoming RS5... Yes, I know something it will be GT-R competitor.

GT-R... Faster then 997 Turbo on the Ring ACCORDING to the Nissan Marketing department.
GT-R is less powerfull and way more heavy then 997 Turbo and it laps Ring faster... Yeah...
Latest 997 Turbo Ring time by Sport Auto(anther example of 997 Turbo-manual with optional LSD did 7.52min in von Saurma hands-this is the same time as Gallardo with Sport suspension and Corsa tires).

I will say it once again GT-R will not confirm any data published by Nissan when it will be testes by Car magazines from Europe. Why? Well, I hear something interesting from my Motorpresse friend...

Re: First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R

But will the RS5 have the straight line speed of GTR? 0-100kmh in 3.7s? Also will the RS5 come in DSG? If you say yes to both of those, I will be buying a RS5.

Re: First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R

    First question:
-do you really belive in 0-60mph in 3.7s for car with 473hp/590Nm? And that weight... Despite DSG crap...
-RS5 will have 0-100km/h time around 4.3s... Way more realistic then GT-R claims...
-RS5 will probably have new 7speed S-Tronic(if Audi solves all the current problems).

Re: First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R

4.3s? That is fast enough for me. I am very keen on the RS5 as I love the looks of the S5! Please please Audi, solve whtever problem you have with the S-tronic. What is the problem anyway?

Re: First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R

Overheating issues and it still can not handle that torque well...

Why do you like DSG that much? Fast upshifts on your GTI? Yes, they are nice with throttle bip(sport mode) but, downshifts are crap IMHO. Did you try to downshift fast from say fifth to third in front of the corner? Do so and see what will happened..

Re: First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R

Yeah I love the fast upshift. Also with baby coming, all future cars have to be wife friendly. I will keep one manual car (my AMV8 at this stage) and the rest have to be driveable by the Mrs. But yes, I do know what you are saying about downshifting. I took the GTI to the track once and the speed of downshift frustrated me.

    Red

Re: First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R

12 more hours until Nissan debuts the car and provides us with 'official information' about the car.

I don't like it THAT much
I'd choose a M3, C63 or RS4/5 over a GT-R any day of the week, and a few days after that
Besides, a norwegian newspaper confirmed today that the GT-R will not be officially imported to Norway anyway

But one thing is for certain, I'm gonna download the GT5 Prologue Demo tomorrow and take it for a virtual test drive

Re: First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R

Then either M3 or C63 AMG. Both in sedan versions...

    kreso,

Throw us a bone, anything on the RS5 front, I'm very eager to see what AUDI has to offer on this. When would be the launch for the RS5?

    Ron,

Few details-3992ccm V8 biturbo FSI, 450hp/530Nm, 7speed S-Tronic(maybe), Drive Select AWD(rear diff torque vectoring), Dynamic Drive Plus chassis...

    Intro-late 2008...

Give us your 'virtual' impressions of the game and car.

Re: First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R

I'd take a purpose built sportscar (GTR) over a tarted up econo sedan (RS4, C63, M3) any day. Is this really a comparison?

Re: First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R

this car will be good to own and drive... HARD... not for posers... will depreciate fast... only if the japs could build quality interiors...

    Thanks Kreso
    Sounds promising....

When will the new RS4 be launched, a year after the RS5?
