Now it is in reverse. The die hards like the 997's but I will wager the general public will look and say " why do I want to buy a new old looking car? I can easily buy a 993 at a fraction of the price."

Remember my words, Nick: you'll lick your fingers about the new 997 S when you see it for the first time.
And it even comes better: the new 997 Turbo will kick a.., I can assure you that. If you don't get yourself an Enzo soon, you'll look pretty stupid in your 360 or even the F430.
Not only that it has spectacular performance, it looks absolutely fantastic.

Or to use the words of an engineer: every Porsche owner should own a Ferrari too but for Ferrari owners, owning a Porsche too is a MUST.
But to satisfy your Ego: he also said that the only super sportscar Porsche engineers take serious and actually consider a competitor to the CGT is the Enzo, not the SLR.
But the CGT is not only cheaper, it is very suitable as a daily driver. One engineer went out in a CGT to get his lunch.

I is going to take me a little time to educate you on the realities of the US and possibly EU market. Performance is no longer a major consideration to the affluent buying public.

    Is it important? Yes.

But more important is styling, driveability and over feel and passion of the car ( I was blown over once I drove the Ferrari). We can not use a fraction of the capabilities of most of the high performance sport cars on US roads. Why pay for something that is for the most part useless? However, should you package the performance with the other qualities I listed, then the upscale buyer will become interested. Does it not strike you as odd that the flagship Porsche (CGT) does not look at all like any of its other archaic model's?

Porsche makes a fantastic performing car which is homely looking and feels like a sedan ( after driving the TT I asked where is the beef?). Ignoring it is mass produced and one in S. Ca can see more of them than VW's, the car just does not generate any passion. People will not pay for performance only.

I think I'm clear on this now. Porsche is in trouble and sales will drop because everyone is buying one.

    Re: 997 speaks for itself

Ah yes...good ole' Texas realism...finally we're back in touch with reality.

    Note to Porsche:
Include locations of McDonalds' restaurants in San Diego area in future issues of Nav system CD-ROM's + DVD's.

So, if people will not pay for Porsche tt's in SoCal, and yet you see more of them than you do VW's, then I guess people must be getting them instead of welfare hand-outs.

I now follow your reasoning on this one, Nick. Who could get passionate about being dependant on welfare.

The 996 was successful and is the reason they are so many of them. The 997 will tank. Its only hope is if so few of them are bought they may have a certain exclusivity to them and people like me might consider buying one. However, in my opinion the car is soooo ugly, if I had the opportunity to own the only one in the world I would pass on it.

    Re: 997 speaks for itself

    Nick,

After the excellent stories we get from RC about his Cayenne turbo, your posts are the ones I enjoy most. The mixture of comedy and pathos make them an art form all to themselves. This one was surreal enough that I had to thank you personally.

too funny, reminds me of the Monty Python's humor

    Re: 997 speaks for itself

OK..Nick...define "tank"....want to make sure we keep track of this one.

Some tight solid metrics...as opposed to your usual hyperbole.

Yes, your definitely on to something. If everyone buys one, Porsche is in big trouble. Their only hope is for sales to be a complete failure.

Hey, you guys from Texas and Arizona really do speak your mind!

Hypoxia: A deficiency of oxygen reaching the tissues of the body.
Yeh, I admit, I had to look it up. Would you include the brain amongst the tissues of the body in this context?

I'd put it down Mad Cow Disease until you came along with that more professional diagnosis - I'm guessing you are an MD. I'd guessed he'd contracted it as a result of cruisin' through the drive thru' lane at his favorite burger restaurant a few times too many in his F360 Spyder.

He has this thing about brightening up the lives of all the poor people down there by showing up, blipping his throttle, smiling at all the servers, and otherwise generally making a spectacle of himself. Sad, really.

I had to be careful about not mentioning the name of the burger restaurant above in the same paragraph as Mad Cow Disease. Nick's an attorney, he'd probably want to talk them into letting him represent them in suing me for every penny I do not possess.

Well, he'd want to. But he'd probably miss the gap under the golden arches when he drove into their parking lot.

Yeh, you guessed it. There's history behind all this.

Southern California has always been Porsche largest market outside of Germany since the 1960s. I believe we are 1/4 of Porsche's sales. Then add the fact that the weather is kind to the cars and you see alot of old Porsches. I do not believe we would be one of Porsche's largest market if the car did not generate any passion.
