    997 GT3 vs. 360 CS vs. F430

    Background
I'm in the lucky position to buy a new sports car. Right now I'm driving a 996 GT3 Mk1 Clubsport, which is my third Porsche. I'm looking for a car that is fun both on the road and on the track. I used to do about 10 track days a year, but now, with at 6 month old son, it's harder to find the time to go to track days. There are not that many tracks close to where I live. So I want a car that is fun to drive on a Sunday morning as well as a proper track day tool. I will not drive it on a daily basis, but I don't want a car that is too compromised for the road. My current 996 GT3 Clubsport is a blast to drive on the track but on the road, driving at less than eight tenths, it is more pain than pleasure.

    The alternatives
I have been offered various alternatives from dealers:
    Alternative 1: 997 GT3 ClubSport, PCCB brakes, MY07

    Alternative 2: Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale, MY04

Alternative 3: Ferrari F430 F1, CCM brakes, sport seats, etc. There are a handful of F430 for sale with similar sporty specs (MY05 -07).

The 360 CS is marginally more expensive than the GT3. The F430 is more expensive than the other two. I do understand that the running costs of the Ferraris are higher than for the Porsche.

What are your ideas and recommendations?

    Thanks in advance,

    fantasma

    Re: 997 GT3 vs. 360 CS vs. F430

I suspect you left the 911 Turbo off the list on purpose. But with 3 people to carry, it's the only choice, really. You'll probably want the new bucket seats.

    Re: 997 GT3 vs. 360 CS vs. F430

    1) 430 w/ CCM's/Racing seats.
    2) CS
    3) 997 GT3

    Re: 997 GT3 vs. 360 CS vs. F430

    (1) CS
    (2) GT3
    (3) F430

    Re: 997 GT3 vs. 360 CS vs. F430

I've started looking at weight much more than I used to. I test drove the 360 CS this week and was extremely impressed. With only 3000 miles and very little clutch wear it is very tempting. Salesman tells me that the 360 CS is likely to increase in value but I'm not falling for that one.

Ask him if he'll back up his claim? You'll see the subject change pretty quickly

    Re: 997 GT3 vs. 360 CS vs. F430

I would get the 997 GT3. It will outperform the 360 CS for sure. It will probably come very close to the Ferrari for a fraction of the price. From everything I've read, it remains a pleasure to drive every day.

    Re: 997 GT3 vs. 360 CS vs. F430

The F430 Scuderia will be out at sometime so I don't know if the 360 CS will increase in value. If you can really afford any of the cars you mentioned, the F430 would be the one.

    Re: 997 GT3 vs. 360 CS vs. F430

Thinging 1) F430, as comfortable to drive, an interesting variation after your 3rd Porsche, 2) 997 GT3 as it is everything you love about your 996, but comfortable at 8/10 too, 3) 360CS as it is less comfortable despite being a great drivers car.

(I've only driven options 2 and 3 mind, so am relying on car mags for my opinion on option 1). What a nice dilema to have!!!

    Re: 997 GT3 vs. 360 CS vs. F430

the 360 CS should be off your list, with the F430 out... ferrari always tens to make older models look really outdated when they release a new one... the F430 is far superior to the 360 CS... which brings us down to the F430 or GT3... the GT3 is much cheaper... if money is no obstacle, go for the F430... a lot less of those on the road... the GT3 is a 997 afterall, and porsche recently produced their 100,000th 997! hehehe

If you had owned both a CS & F430, got to drive each for a couple of yrs, I doubt you would put the CS first & the F430 3rd.

I do intend to track the car, although not as much as my 996GT3.

Stradale: from your signature (and your photo gallery) you seem to have owned both a 360CS and a F430. How do they compare? Pros and con?

    Thanks in advance,

Yup. Bought my CS new in September 2004, traded it for a new F430 September 2006.

    Pro's CS:
    - Flat Handling/ harder G's (maybe perception)
    - In the Higher RPM the car really comes alive
    - Launch Control
    - Sticky tires/stock CCM's
    - The sound shifting at redline from 1st to 2nd.(like a rifle shot)
    - Look of the front/ rockers
    - Loaded w/ CF interior including doors & engine bay standard.
    - They all have Racing Seats

    Con's CS:
    - Lack of Grunt in the Lower RPM's
    - VERY Low clearance in front
    - Sticky tires pick up and throw every pebble into wheelwells which don't have sound insulation so it gets noisy on some roads
    - Lexan rear window prone to scratches

    Pro's F430:
    - Feels faster/stronger everywhere (all RPM's)
    - (E-Diff)/Manettino
    - Feels easier to drive hard
    - More comfortable..
    - Suspension
    - Deeper sounding engine/exhaust
    - Rear of car ultra cool imo, more aggressive than CS
    - Interior feels more upscale, done nicer than CS
    - Prefer the standard wheels to the CS wheels/ except they dont have the Titanium bolts too bad.
    - IMO 430's build quality is a little better.

    Con's F430:
    - Hmmmm? Not much, it's stance isn't as low as the CS.
    - No Launch Control in US
    - Front bumper not great looking
    - Price - W/ Racing Seats, CCM's & all the CF my car was $225k sticker. Although I could sell it for more than I paid.
    - Hard to get in the US

CS More track focused (suspension, tires, louder exhaust)

Con's of both cars - Like many very high performance cars Difficult to see out of, especially towards the rear. In the wet they're a handful.. Also for whatever reason the paint is prone to stone chips so 3M front bumper, behind wheels is recommended and if you're looking at pre-owned cars this would be important to me that the car had film protection from the beginning.

Pro's of both cars - Nobody makes the WHOLE driving experience more FUN! Everytime I get in my car it's like I just drove it out of the dealership! I never tire of the WHOLE driving experience, it's not anything you can explain it writing, it's the way both cars drive, sound , handle & feel,,,,,,, that makes them very, very special.

    Re: 997 GT3 vs. 360 CS vs. F430

    Stradale,
thanks for taking the time to write an extensive comparison between the 360CS and the F430. It is really useful.

Some, actually most, of the con's regarding the 360CS are actually the same as the con's wih my current 996GT3 Clubsport...

From the beautiful pictures I guess that both cars are Rosso Scuderia or is the F430 Rosso Corsa?

Have you driven a 997GT3? If so, how does it compare with the two Ferraris?

    Thanks again,

    /fantasma

My CS was Rosso Scuderia. My F430 is Rosso Corsa.

The 997 GT3 feels similiar in power to the CS, the 430 feels stronger, especially in the higher Rev.'s. One thing that is very positive for the GT3 if you're using the car all the time is everyday visibility, driving position. Both Ferrari's are more difficult to manuver in traffic or when their are other cars around you, the GT3 just like other 911's gives you more confidence in your moves. I'd say the GT3's suspension stiffness is like the F430, the CS's is firmer. If I was deciding between a GT3 vs CS/430 it would all depend on what type of driving I was going to do. I will tell you that for everyday driving/commuting I would change my vote above and pick the GT3. But if it was more of a weekend/track car & I could choose to avoid traffic etc. I'd definitely choose the F430. The F430 brings so many fun intangibles to the table it's ridiculous.

    Re: 997 GT3 vs. 360 CS vs. F430

I would never go for an - in my understanding - "outdated" F360. The GT3 and for sure the F430 are the more modern cars.

    I would go:

    GT3
    F430
    F360

Good advice. It's not uncommon to see Ferraris on the streets of San Francisco and when I look at the drivers they look really stressed out and unhappy. Especially downtown which has terrible traffic and roads.
