    Any RennTeamers done Skip Barber?

Had heard about the Skip Barber Racing schools in the US. Any RennTeamers done them and have feedback. Could always do with some high performance driving improvement ahead of the TTS.

Any European alternatives that are good?

Re: Any RennTeamers done Skip Barber?

Has anyone heard good or bad reports about Bertil Roos' 5-day program? That program, Porsche's 2-day PDE at the Barber Track, and Jim Hall's Kart School in California are the schools I'm considering in the future. Beyond this, I would have to go to Europe or switch to Rally driving schools here in the U.S. I would have loved to go to the Nurburgring BMW course but unfortunately all the cars are SMG M3's instead of manuals-- what a waste!
Also, there are F1 driving schools out there I wish to attend in the future. So many schools, so little time and money.

Re: Any RennTeamers done Skip Barber?

Have not done Skip, but have done PDE at Barber Motorsports, both begining and masters courses.
If you drive a Porsche do PDE, it's that simple! You will learn a great deal from people who drive at a professional level, 5 drivers in the Rolex 6hrs at the Glenn are instructors at PDE. Course is very well structured, as well as alot of fun.
If they offered a money back guarantee for the classes they would have no takers, it's that good!
Take a ride at Barber Motorsports Park.....

Here is agood link for grat racing schools in North America -http://www.autoracing-directory.com/Driving_Schools.html

Most of it Formula type cars (F2 and F3)

This one I am going in the next 2 months - http://www.autosportbasi.com/indexA.htm

TRhe best school for rally is located in Vermont

If you are thinking about racing career, start from Formula cars - if you can drive it, you can drive anything

Btw most of the top racing school will offer you a somewhat free/discounted education if you are good at the first stage

    Lev,
For which program did you register? Have you taken any courses before or is this your first? Thanks for the links.

Re: Any RennTeamers done Skip Barber?

I am going for 3 days F3 class (max speed 200 kmh), this school is ranked as one of top 10 in N.America + the track was actually used for F1 competition.

I didnt take any courses but participated in track days arranged by local racing school with instructors with my TT.

The best for rally I mentioned the one in Vermont is http://www.team-oneil.com/index2.htm . If you graduate this one you are good to go to compete.

If you think about Porsche, then go for Porsche Alabama school Porsche does - you can find the info at Porsche USA web site.

Re: Any RennTeamers done Skip Barber?

Where are the school rankings? Anywhere on the net?

I do not see any 3-day F3 class on the website.
I do see a 3-day competition racing course using Formula 1600 cars. Are the Formula 1600 cars considered F3 class?

Re: Any RennTeamers done Skip Barber?

    F2 - F2000 (max speed around 250kmh)
    F3 - F1600 (max speed around 200kmh)

Re: Any RennTeamers done Skip Barber?

    Maverick,

Yes I am planning to attend Competition racing course, F1600 level for 3 Days. The price is $2 599,00 CDN, so in USD it is about 2,000.

If you are thinking to compete then may be you should start from karting (I aplogize if you already passed this level).

The way you know if the school is good, is based on teachers bio/resume, track (famous track with ongoing competitions etc.), type of license you get when you graduate and people opinions that you can easy find online.

Btw I see you are in Ohio, so you are not that far away from Quebec . I myself live in Toronto Good luck!

    Lev,
At age 24, I may be too old for competition. I should have started 10-15 years ago. However, in the quest to become a better driver, I think I will start, as you suggest, in karting schools.

I visited Toronto years ago on vacation. I agree it and Quebec are not far from Ohio. Hope you have fun at the school. Please give us a full report after completion.

Re: Any RennTeamers done Skip Barber?

Well actually age 24 is not that old...

When I speak with racing drivers who race for living they basically say the age is not such big deal (except Indy and or Formula) but the family is.

Me myself is 32 and I do want to start racing for fun, amateur level, I guess. There are few nice and interesting track competitions as well as rallies. Did you hear about tagra newfoundland for example? Also there is Paris Dakar amateur level I am not kiding

Do you mean family support is a big deal or do you mean having appropriate family racing genes are a big deal?

I did read an article once about the Targa Newfoundland. As for Paris-Dakar amateur level, driving throught the deadly Sahara desert sounds more intimidating but rather tempting. Here's an excerpt from a motorcycle article on the net:

Entering the Paris-Dakar isn't cheap (no surprise there).

The entry fee is 2700 euros.

The registration fee is 9500 euros (until July 30 this year; after that it's 11,700).

The registration fee for an assistance car (and you'll need one) is between 1,700 and 4,000 euros depending on the type of car.

And then you'll need to pay for your race bike, transportation (you and your bike), hotels, visas and the rest.

Figure on about 75,000 euros (around R600 000) to compete in the event.

    Anybody rich enough...

    And regarding preparation:

What would you say to an amateur taking part in this great adventure for the first time?
That he isn't either the first or the last to enter for the first time! The particularity of the Dakar is that with a minimum of equipment and a small structure you can make it to the end. The human element is very important. Mental strength and physical preparation are vital. You have to believe in yourself.

    You're a bad influence, lev.
I think I may have to add both rallies to my "To do list."

Re: Any RennTeamers done Skip Barber?

In terms of family I meant that its tough for the racers having a family (wife and kids) and being away most of the year (I heard as much as 250 days per year). Dont forget that besides the racing which is an event that takes a lot of time itself as well as before and after, there is a lot of work around testing and preparing the car as well as racing it for training purposes on different tracks or roads (in rally case). So most of the time you are away flying and driving, not sleeping and away of your home and family pretty much risking your life.

Paris Dakar, yes I hear you but I love the challenge (that why I drive Porsche too). To compete and do smething challenging makes me feel better plus I love driving
