    power output new M5

BMW's new M5 will have 507 hp at 7750 rpm and 520 Nm at 6100 rpm. Maximum rpm will be 8250 (!), compression rate 12:1. Quite high for a limo...
Its 7 speed SMG gearbox will be 20% quicker than M3's SMGII and will offer 11 (!) driving programs.

    Re: power output new M5

Do you have infos about when the new M5 will be available at the dealer?

    Re: power output new M5

Given M5 is seeking to compete in limo class where no muss/no fuss straight-line ability (just press the accelerator without defocusing from the conversation on the car's speakerphone) wins the day, I'm not sure M5's straight-line abilities (esp in 50-120MPH zone) will impress those acclimatized to SL55/CL55/S55's monster torque, which I suspect is far more accessible than M5's weaker torque band....and M5 will hit dealers over 2 yrs after intro of the current 55 engine....

    Re: power output new M5

This amazing 500HP high reving N/A V10 engine deserves a sportier package besides the E-60. I wish BMW would make a small agile 4 seater coupe with it.

Carlos, unfortunately I suspect the M6 CSL is what BMW has in mind to address your idea. Just hope they de-Bangleize the M6 and the CSL version isn't as weak as the M3CSL was vs M3....i.e., deminimus performance improvements and brakes that fade too quickly for realistic mountain curves/track use.

Actually, the M6CSL will have an even larger and more powerful (5.5L, 550HP) version of that V10 engine...

Last thing I heard is that delivery will start late that year, November or December.
Prices should begin at 90 to 95k Euro.

The E46 M3's SMG II offers 11 driving programs already.

The article actually said that shifting times will be INcreased by 20%, but that was probably a typo...

Since the M5 has launch control, I think it will be able to hold it's own against the AMG 55's in a drag race:

"The Launch Control function enables "rookie racing drivers" to make a perfect standing start in order to maximise the initial acceleration. This function requires the prior deactivation of DSC.
The aim of the Launch Control function is to relieve the driver of shifting gears, giving him more freedom to concentrate on his actual job of driving.
When the car is stationary, the only thing the driver has to do is to flip the selector lever forward and keep it in that position. If he now fully depresses the accelerator pedal, the engine is automatically set to its optimum starting speed. If the driver releases the selector lever, the M5 is accelerated with the ideal amount of slip. The driver does not have to change gears until the M5 reaches its peak speed - the SMG gearbox with drivelogic automatically shifts/ through the seven gears and changes from one gear to the next gear shortly before maximum torque is attained."

    Re: power output new M5

Ok, so it might be close in a traffic light GP, but what about in gear times? What about from 30-50mph, what about 70mph -120mph? Will 500NM be enough to beat the 700-900NM of the V8K and V12TT?

    Re: power output new M5

The in-gear award goes to AMG, because of the superior torque.

But it's going to be interesting to see how they compare from 30-70 or 70-120 if they can use any gear they like, and the M5 can stay close to it's 8200 redline.

Big torque vs. big revs - I see a EVO test coming up...

I think we had different articles.

    Does it? Didn't know that...

I suspect when someone is commuting on a busy freeway while chatting on speakerphone (common use for these limos in major urban mkts) the idea of having to shift gears to try to find enough torque for a 50-100MPH burst makes M5 a fairly weak competitor to the 55's, the prevailing kings of this mkt segment.....and this BMW arrives 2 some yrs after current 55s have been available....I remain underwhelmed by the M5's specs for the target mkt....M5 seems to be an SLR-like mongrel...not remarkable as a commuter/GT car and not a great sportscar.....

    Re: power output new M5

I don't necesarily agree, I don't think that a 4-door sedan for commuting and autobahn needs to be a 2 ton, 5-speed torque coverter, supercharged boat. A lot of people, especially sportcar minded enthusiasts, will value a revolutionary easy to operate fast shifting 7-gear sequential, ligher/agile platform, sporty feeling high reving N/A V10 engine with better steering and handling/dynamics in their car while still offereing all the benefits of a large 4-door sedan.

Its matter of preference, but in the SPORT-sedan market, the M5 is going to be a mayor hit, due to the distance in the "SPORT" aspect it has put with its rivals. And sport is the name of the game in this class, since there is already a wide range of other versions of the same platform (E-class, 5-series, A6, etc) to pick from that is best suited if performance is not your top priority. So in this class perfromance is what sells, and in the mags and streets, in this special class the performance always gets all the attention and value. That is my view anyway, if I had to go to work on one of those cars, I know the M5 may put a smile in my face as I attack those curves playing with the seven gear sequential and working that high-reving powerband OTHO the merc with the 5 speed slush box and low rev supercharger and soft chasis setup... But that is my personal case though. Fortunately I can go to work in a 911 anyway

You and Bilal seem to be competing for the " Rennteam BenchRacers Trophy"

Don't forget that the M5 SMG has an automatic mode as well, that can change the gears for you to find enough revs to leave the AMG behind
