    Why not the RSR

    So I just got finished watching the Petit Le Mans and I'm all hopped up on Pomelgranite & Vodka cocktails.

    Throughout the race I watched the RSR's dice up some finely tuned machines in the GT2 class which begged the question ...

    I never quite understood the step-up between the GT3 and GT3 RS. Frankly, the RS is really all about bragging rights ... you get some wider hips, a little more carbon and lexan but not much more performance for your money.

    Why didn't Porsche greenlight a streetable (or at least street legal) version of the RSR? Performance aside, it's such a sexy looking piece of machinery that really has function following it's form.

    The RS is the homologation special for the RSR, it is as close as you can get already.

    Any closer and it would be unpleasant, racing dog teeth gearbox that emits a high pitched wine under throttle, all metal suspension brushings/mounts, so low that it would bottom out on everything...

    Perhaps for someone looking for a close to race car experience on the road should try the new "Caparo T1".

    Indeed individuals have their own tolerances and limits for what they can tolerate in a "road" car, if you want it to be louder/faster/etc, throw straight pipes, stickier tyres, harder suspension, and strip out the sound deadening/carpets from an RS and you are pretty close to the RSR.

    I know someone who had and drove 911 Cup cars for the last 7 years, each year, in US. He told me that there is a big difference in the handling of the two, especially on the 997 models. And internally it looks that there are more things different than we imagine. Usually, the RSR is better.

    Well, why not slap on the body panelsof the rsr on the rs then? Those flared fenders look awesome!

    What Moogle said.

    The RS model has always been Porsche's road going version of their race car. Plus wouldn't cost just explode with having to rebuild the motors often?

    Indeed. The motors/etc are also very high strung and require routine maintainence.

    Race motors/other parts lifetimes are calculated in HOURS run, not MILES, which is a very important distinction.

    It becomes quite expensive to run one of these.

    That said, I know a guy who drives a GT3 Cupcar as his daily driver in Hong Kong - took him more than a few bribes to get it registered though

    Not to mention the fact that you won't even be able to service the engine yourself. There are special nuts/bolts attached to certain mechanical parts removable only by authorized Porsche technicians in Germany or some other unnamed location. All you can really do is have your race shop remove the entire engine/tranny assembly and ship it back to them to be rebuilt.

    The Porsche GT3 Cup car and the corresponding RS(R) variants are quite different in terms of aerodynamics, engine and suspension. The 996 RS streetcar in fact utilized suspension components being homologated for the then-appearing RSR model, if I remember correctly.

    This is a different story with the RS model in the current lineup, which is more looks and numbers than the previous iteration. Since the RSR's high-strung engine would take quite some expense, there still remains the GT2 as the stronger variant, even including uprated suspension, brakes and aerodynamics.

    There have been a couple Arabians ordering the previous RSR for road use, bearing in mind that Porsche didn't promote the idea themselves at all.

    Engine rebuilds at the factory are nothing uncommon and not limited to Porsche cars.

    GT3 Cup and RSR are two very different cars ... one is really nothing more than a GT3 with slicks and strippped interior.

    The RSR is a full blooded race machine, but my point was why not water down the RSR (A la GT1 Le Man's racer of the 90's). I'm sure for the street all you would need to do is:
    - Add some crash foam and bumper supports to it'll pass NTSHA.
    - Replace straight cut gears (Although I love the whine) with radial cut
    - Add 6 speed instead of the sequential.
    - Detune the engine to run on pump gas and be more reliable.
    - Add cats and emissions crapola.
    - Use silicone and rubber instead of metal bushings to soften the ride
    - Raise the ride height 1.5 inches

    All else remains the same and off you go.

    It would make so much a better car than the GT3 RS in my opinion.

    This what the 997RS should have been to justify its race stickers.

    It would still be a homologation nightmare. Porsche needs to sell cars in the USA, which is a huge market for them. They don't even bother installing the Real GT3 seats/rollcage/fire extinguisher (essentially the clubsport package) in GT3/RS.

    The USA always gets shafted when it comes to this. It is simply too expensive for them to make the car, and thats why they won't do it

    Its not that its too expensive, your not allowed to sell a car in NA with a roll bar. Besides, the thought of being in an accident in a car with a roll bar that your HELMET-LESS head can be bashed against isn't a real sexy thought to me, to be honest.

    That's why a rollbar must be used in conjunction with the 6pt harnesses at all times.
