INTERIOR ALUMINUM "UPGRADES"

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2004 C4S AND I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE NICE TO PERSONALIZE THE INTERIOR. I WAS DISMAYED TO DISCOVER THAT ALL THESE UPGRADES (FOR A CAR THAT LISTED AT $93,000 NEW) NAMELY-DOOR HANDLES,LIDS,CENTER CONSOLE ETC. (O.E.M.) ARE PAINTED PLASTIC.ARE THERE ANY AFTERMARKET ALUMINUM PRODUCTS OUT THERE????

they may be painted in many instances but they look good and the quality seems to hold. mine are some 2 years old and 100%. unlike the Titanium look crap i had in my E46 M3.

there is actually a reason for this... and it is not cost saving... but weight saving. during crash tests porsche found out that aluminum door handles (to open the door) could result in the door being opened. they first tried to solve this by adding counterweights to the handles, but quickly scrapped this idea and went for painted plastic.

i suppose that it's convenient that its also alot cheaper

Remember from a product liability point of view an interior door handle has to work first time, every time! No if, and, or but's! There are types of glass reinforced plastics that are more expensive than aluminum on a per pound basis. Just becase it is plastic doesn't mean it is cheap.

Plastic or not, porsche design obviously want to keep it light as possible. It sick either way. But at least the plastic doesn't look cheap.
