996TTS October Build

Just had my build date confimed as October for the TTS. Should have it for November. A bit later than I was hoping for (thought it might be September build) but nonetheless should be worth the wait.

A quick question - if I do a factory pickup, do I get it earlier? Is it worth it?

You may want to see if P is offering factory pickup on 996TTS for your time frame. I was originally scheduled to pick up a US-bound SL65 at factory in mid-Aug....and 2-3 wks ago MB suddenly cancelled all factory pickups for SL65 (at least US-bound)....so now I have to wait another month to get it....and won't have that autobahn opportunity to go above 65MPH legally.

You would get the car earlier because it takes about 4 weeks to ship it to the US. But you will have to wait about 6 weeks to get it home after using it in Europe. Also, it will cost you additional money to pick it up in Europe.

Some people love the idea of Euro pick up and money is the least of their concerns. However, if you follow the break in guidelines how fast do you think you will go on the Autobahn?

Yeah, that is what I was thinking of too... So, what's the use of a factory pick up?!? Just for fun?
Additionally; you would have your car, drive it for half a day, and then you have to ship it yourself to the us... and then you would have to wait...
Or how does that work? (I tried www.howstuffworks.com, but nothing on the search "porsche+factory+pickup...

)

No Porsche handles all of it for you. Of course you pay for it. Typically you get a plate to drive around Europe up to 30 days. In adddition you would need insurance and again Porsche does it all.

I believe Porsches' program is titled "tourist delivery" My concern would also include parking in some of the cities and the narrow streets.

Are break-in guidelines particularly relevant to most enthusiasts? I note several competing cos. have varying recommendations. I know many individuals (self included) who flog their cars from Day1 and haven't had mechanical issues....and typically trade-in the toy anyway after 5K-10K miles for the next new toy.

Been driving Porsches around Europe for over 25 years without worrying unduly about parking in the cities or about the narrow streets.

Even during break-in, you can drive a Porsche here a lot faster than 65 mph!

You should base your decision on whether the thought of a driving vacation in Europe appeals to you.

I live in the UK, so could bring it home on the train. has anyone done the factory pickups? Are they particularly special?

oh, if you live in the UK its a completely different story

the 6~weeks figure was for US delivery,

for EU delivery and then UK pickup, there would only be 1 week in between.

if you live in the UK, then its well worth it

I do agree. Europe is wonderful to drive through - little streets or not. While they can sometimes be a bit of a challenge in the E55, in the 996 they should be a piece of cake.

In any event, I don't plan to do a lot of parking!

What makes you say that? Italy is OK in my experience. Now LA, that is a place I would avoid with a car like this..... :-)

Don't worry....confine yourself to LA's Westside or NYC's Greenwich, CT and your odds of being carjacked are only a little bit lower than in the South Bronx or South-Central LA....I wonder if Italy has similar disparities?

thats what my dealer told me when I asked about european delivery,

1st he said, if you do go, don't goto italy, you'll get carjacked, and then he said, screw it don't do euro delivery, you'll have to wait 6 weeks inbetween dropping it off and getting it back in the usa

plus, you have to plan a trip to europe in the timeframe of your car's production... inconvient at best

Well, in this instance the guy is talking about a factory pickup and then taking his car back to the UK, so

a) Italy wouldn't exactly be a short-cut,

and

b) even if he took in a factory visit, he could be home within 24 hours of leaving there if he wanted to.

Hmm, mafia stories from the National Enquirer?

Italy is a dangerous place for cars...if you drive a Diesel.
Porsche cars are too flashy, too hard to sell (even only the parts) and the former East European countries and Middle East demand mostly SUVs and large limousines like the Mercedes S class or BMW 7 series.

I've been to Italy several times over the past years, always in a Porsche and never had problems. Also never heard from other Porsche drivers to have had problems.

BTW: maybe I'm wrong but I think I read somewhere that regarding stolen cars, Barcelona in Spain is the most dangerous city in Europe.
