    997 Clutch issue...

    Hi all. I recently bought a 997S, after driving an M3 for 3 years. I've owned a 986 and a 986S in the past as well, but this has never happened before...

    I've got 6000km on the car now and on two occasions, once a few months a go and once on the weekend, I decided to let it go from a standing stop. I was in sport mode, revved the engine to about 4000rpm and let the clutch out. I didn't side-step the clutch but I was aggressive.. the engine revved up to about 6000 but the car did not respond in kind. Instead for the next half hour it smelled like burnt clutch. There was no wheel spin, and poor acceleration. The car performs very well under 'normal' aggressive driving.

    Is there a control to limit wheel spin in an aggressive launch or is there a possible defect with the clutch? No other sports car I've ever driven has done this.

    Welcome to the forum.

    I don't have Sport Chrono but I think if you don't totally deactivate PSM it will kick in (even with Sport Chrono on) when PSM detects wheel spin.

    I too came out of an M3 (and multiple BMW's before that) but with close to 60% of the 997S's weight sitting on 11" rear wheels using your launch technique will make short order of your clutch. If you were still smelling burnt clutch for 30 minutes I would say you got that clutch pretty darn hot.

    turn your traction control off for an aggressive start. I have a 997C2 and with it off I can do a perfect start with definate wheel spin for the first few feet.

    I would have thought that the PSM would have responded by braking and cutting fuel to the engine. Instead the clutch pedal felt 'soft'... it didn't come all the way back up until I got of the throttle. That's just not right mechanically...

    I also have a 997S and I do get the occasional burnt clutch smell, no necessarily in extreme conditions. This has no immediate effect on further clutch operation.
    In my 10k miles driving experience, I had one abnormal clutch behaviour: in the middle of a track day, my clutch pedal got stuck to the floor for something like 2 seconds on so. I was very surprised and worried, but it never reocurred afterwards.

    I would consider your launch to be abusing the clutch. You certainly don't need to have the engine up to 4000 rpm. I do the this at around 1000 rpm. The 911 has so much rear traction that it is very hard to burn rubber on one,--dropping the clutch, which is essentially what you did, will only lead to premature clutch wear and excessive rear wheel hop.

    I did that same thing to my 2001 carrera cab I tried to do a launch but just managed to put about 10,000 miles on the clutch in 2 seconds. I never did that again it smelled for about 3 days, stunk up the entire garage. I now have a 2007 c2scab and will not do the launch thing. There are a lot of cars that can go fast in a straight line but not to many with chassis like a 911 so if you want to launch go get a 69 Z-28 302 just don't try to stop or turn in a hurry

    1. 4,000 is a bit high compared to what the magazines were using to arrive at their best 0-60 and 1/4-mile e.t.'s. I think they were in the 3500-3800 range. Not that much lower, but still...

    2. Sounds like you overpowered the clutch's clamping ability, and smoked it. Just two occassions likely didn't hurt a damn thing. If you're not experiencing any "chatter" during regular street standing-starts, then you've got nothing to worry about..

    3. Why are you wasting your time doing drag-launches just for the hell of it?? First rule of clutch and driveline preservation, save the heavy stuff FOR WHEN IT COUNTS... A real race, preferably a TIMED race, at a drag strip... Anything else is like kicking your dog to see if he'll yelp...

    I keep telling myself that I'm going to 1/4-mile my 997S as soon as the weather gets good and crispy-cool... I sure hope my clutch is up to the task of getting me out of the hole without a bog...

    My 993 had a weak clutch off the line, and I smoked it a couple times much the same as you related. But once I understood that it just didn't have enough engineered-in clamping power for that type of drop, I never had another issue with it, and it served me well throughout my ownership...

    Not to be picky, but '69 Z/28's had lousy bottom-end torque and a long 1st-gear ratio... Go with a big-block!!!

    just was the first fast car z-28 I was in and you know about the first of any thing it kind of stays with you not to picky

    When evo tested the GT3, they said that best results were achieved with 2700 rpm. However, they also said it was only something like 3 or 4 degrees Celsius that day. That's too low for Cups and with warmer weather, they would probably have to increase the clutch drop range to get the first few meters of small wheel spin they were looking for in order to get a best time.

    something very similar happened with me.
    but in my case i let off the clutch and it didnt launch.like the clutch continues pressed. but it wasnt! after some seconds everything come back right. all controls were OFF.

    I have had similar problems and it has always happened in the Sport Mode. After I have put an RSS Plenum and a header on the car I don't find the need to use the Sport Mode any more and I can modulate the throttle much better in the normal mode. The throttle response has significantly improved with these two mods. Next up a chip and the X-51 Air Box-TB. 2006 C2S
